Thank you very much to everyone who worked, played and attended AJ#14. What a fantastic night! Special thanks again to Epistrophy Arts for helping put this show together.

For those of you wanting to see Eugene Chadbourne again (or if you missed him on Saturday), Doc Chad is playing with Lisa Cameron (ST 37; Suspirians; Venison Whirled) at an extra special jazz-centric Me-Mer-Mo Monday at The Volstead tonight! As if that wasn't enough, saxophonist John Dikeman (Universal Indians) will be playing a solo set and a second set with Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Jonathan F. Horne and Stefan Gonzalez.

Also playing tonight are the duo of Thomas Helton (bass) + Kevin Butler (we hope he is on tuba!) and the trio of Joshua Thomson (sax) + Aaron Parks (drums) + Daniel Durham (upright bass).

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - WHERE'S THE STAGE

Eugene Chadbourne. Dr. Eugene Chadbourne. Doc Chad. Where do we even begin?

Doc Chad is known as a jazz or avant-garde guitarist & banjo player but that would be vastly underselling him. Over his 40+ years of performing, he has cultivated a truly idiosyncratic & unique place in American music. His solo career began with acoustic guitar explorations in the spirits & veins of Anthony Braxton & Derek Bailey, leading to early collaborations with John Zorn & Henry Kaiser. His continued explorations & collaborations are legion — highlights include playing with DNA and others in the New York no wave scene; fronting Shockabilly; inventing the electric rake; a one-off collab with Camper Van Beethoven called Camper Van Chadbourne; his aptly named acid-fried LSD C&W. Doc Chad released a dream & tour diary collection entitled Dreamory, over 1000 pages dating back to his teens (The House of Chadula, 2013).

In some narratives, to be iconoclastic is to be American and Doc Chad is a true American iconoclast.

Doc will be playing a solo set in the midst of his playing with a) Ralph White & Walter Daniels; b) Jonathan F. Horne; and c) Alex Coke, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Stefan Gonzalez.

Jonathan Horne--How To Play Guitar

Jonathan F. Horne, a master of surreal guitar textures and Austin's biggest Ventures fan, is widely considered one of the best guitar players in town. Leader of the semi-improvisational noise-rock/surf band Plutonium Farmers and one-half of the instrumental duo Horne + Holt, Jonathan is also a member of The Young Mothers (w/ Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Jawwaad Taylor, Stefan Gonzalez, Jason Jackson and Frank Rosaly) and Knest (w/ Thor Harris & Randall Holt). He has been a member of many other bands including White Denim, Bop English, Ichi Ni San Shi and later this year will be on a record with Ingebrigt Håker Flaten & Joe McPhee.

Jonathan will be playing with Doc Chad sometime in the middle of the proceedings. We are not sure what to expect but in a recent FB message we saw something but getting crazy with country covers, so... get ready for some LSD C&W y'all!!!

Carousel Lounge

The latter part of the eve brings us bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, saxophonist/flutist Alex Coke and drummer/percussionist Stefan Gonzalez.

Ingebrigt recently received the Buddy Award, one of his native Norway's highest honors in the arts, from the Norwegian Jazz Federation. Like many playing this night, he has collaborated with an insane number of people including Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermark, Rob Mazurek, David Murray, Tom Carter, Lisa Cameron, et al – he is also a member of The Thing, of Atomic, of The Young Mothers, of SOTOL, of Plutonium Farmers. He is the founder & programmer of the eclectic music festival & series Sonic Transmissions in Austin TX.

Alex, a native Texan & Austin favorite, spent the 90s with the Dutch ensemble Willem Breuker Kollektief; his many stints include Live-Action Brass Band, the Leadbelly Legacy Band, New Texas Swing, The Worthy Constituents, the Paradise Regained Orchestra, the Trio Henk de Jonge, the Mysterious Quartet from Helsinki, the Creative Opportunity Orchestra with Tina Marsh, Carl Smith Tentet and so much more.

Stefan is best known for playing with their family bands Yells At Eels (with brother Aaron Gonzalez & father Dennis Gonzalez) and Akkolyte (w/ Aaron; Akkolyte are backing Doc Chad at other TX dates). They perform solo as Orgullo Primitivo/Primitive Orgasm and also play with the Dallas industrial noise trio Mother II. Constantly pushing musical boundaries, Stefan has explored many genres ranging from hardcore punk, industrial, black metal, and grindcore to improvisational music, jazz, and ambient music. Past & current groups, collaborators, and recording projects include The Young Mothers, Unconscious Collective, Asukubus, Jandek, mike watt, Luis Lopes Humanization 4tet, Curtis Clark Trio, Ariel Pink With Added Pizzazz, Renegade Spirits Ensemble featuring Famoudou Don Moye, Aram Shelton, Damon Smith, Tom Carter, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Cojoba and many more. Stefan recently stepped down as one of the longtime curators of the experimental series Outward Bound Mixtape Sessions in Dallas.

Ralph White + Walter Daniels

Beginning the evening that is AJ #14: Eugene Chadbourne & Friends will be TX greats Ralph White & Walter Daniels. Ralph, a member of the Texas Music Hall of Fame, was a member of cult favorite The Bad Livers. A roots musician in the truest sense, Ralph White channels his love of traditional American genres through a variety of instruments including banjo, fiddle, guitar, button accordion & kalimba; without retreading old paths, he makes music that is at once in the moment and seemingly of times long past. Ralph is, as the Austin Chronicle puts it, "a [self-taught] master of ethnomusicology." Recent releases include collaborations with Patty Griffin, Thor Harris (Thor & Friends), Little Mazarn, and Steve Marsh (Terminal Mind). Walt, equally at home with blues, country, punk and jazz, plays harmonica, noseflute and tenor sax. Walt has been on a staggering number of releases including albums & singles with Jack O'Fire, The Oblivians, Austin Jukebox alums The Revelators, '68 Comeback, Official: Lydia Lunch, The Crack Pipes, Big Foot Chester, Meet Your Death and a duo album with guitarist John Schooley. Daniels was part of the Doug Sahm tribute in 2000, The Texas Sessions, with Eugene Chadbourne, trombonist David Dove and pedal steel player Susan Alcorn musician.

Austin Jukebox & Epistrophy Arts, in partnership with The SIMS Foundation and Crosspick Studio, proudly present Austin Jukebox #14 on April 13th at Beerland, Texas.

We pride ourselves on putting together interesting and diverse lineups featuring artists and bands from different musical genres, who are incredibly talented but usually not “famous” by mainstream commercial music standards. We strive to introduce the audience to music they don’t know at all or very little about, in the hope that they’ll discover music that’ll enrich and expand their love of all types of music.

The lineup for this Jukebox features legendary underground guitarist/banjoist Eugene Chadbourne, as well as other incredible artists Ralph E White, Walter Daniels, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Alex Coke, and Stefan Ariel Gonzalez.

Saturday is almost here! Austin Jukebox welcomes Lyres, Oneida, The Ugly Beats, and Semihelix to Beerland, Texas this Saturday. Doors at 8pm, $5 cover (no advance tickets), **18+**

Remember, Beerland is a small (i.e. intimate) venue with a capacity under 200. Arrive early if you want to ensure being able to see your favorite band's set in full. In the event of a sell out, a line will form outside the venue's entrance gate and we'll bring people in one at a time under a one out, one in policy. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon!

Last night was so much fun… Every Austin Jukebox is great, we always have such a fun time. We’re so lucky to be able to host these events. But this one was even better than usual.

First, a huge thanks to Max Meehan who did all the heavy lifting of getting Puerto Rico Flowers to agree to play one more show. That was not easy, and it was special, it was a great performance, and for those of you that were there you will be able to say that you saw that band live and they only played 10 shows.

And thanks to White Suns, The Young Mothers, and Body Pressure - all of whom played incredible sets.

Big thanks to all the rest of our team who are always so on point and do a great job with everything from booking, logistics, hospitality, social media, PR, art design, transportation, and everything else that goes into one of these events. It takes a fairly significant number of people to pull it off, and everyone is just awesome that is on our team.

A special thanks to the staff at Beerland who did a great job as always.

Thank you to The SIMS Foundation and Crosspick Studio who are our great partners/sponsors that we love.

And finally, thanks to everyone that came to the show. Chili Dog Fest #9 is here! Starting at noon, come out to Empire Control Room & Garage and Side Bar to hear loads of amazing bands perform! A $10 donation (all proceeds go to Central Texas Food Bank) gets you a regular or vegan hot dog plus fixings and three raffle tickets for lots of great prizes! This part is all ages.

Then, starting at 8pm tonight at Beerland, Texas, we’ll be hosting A Very Chili Dog Austin Jukebox! This has a separate $5 donation entry (also benefiting the food bank). This part is strictly 21+ only.

#AmplifyATX ends tonight at 6pm! This is one of Austin's largest days of giving where members of the community are encouraged to donate back to the various organizations that they identify with, have received help from, volunteer with, etc. Around 700 organizations are represented this year.
