It is Giving Tuesday and once again our organization needs support! We have greatly enjoyed supporting so many great programs this year as well as engaging in major improvements to our property and house (with increased parking and window restoration) as well as inviting the public to celebrate on our lawn and enjoy camaradarie vie Zoom Speaker series. Here's hoping you are inclined to give us an end of year donation so we can keep going in the second 100 years of our existence. New members always welcomed as well!

"Transforming Belmont" Town Hall transformer box near 1853 Homer House

Maybe you noticed something different driving up Concord Ave on your way past the Homer House? In 2020, the Belmont Art Association created a project, Transforming the transformer boxes, funded in part by Belmont Cultural Council. The transformer box at the corner of Pleasant St and Concord Ave was one of the first ones completed. Here is a video about this art project. https://youtu.be/EYmagZPazJ4

Maintenance check on the Homer House. First photo is one of our four temporary windows while Window Woman company restores them, our latest Community Preservation Grant from town of Belmont. Next four photos are some of our native pollinator plants from last year's project with Meadowmaking for Biodiversity. Last photo is our back screen door that needs a trusty handyman to get it to fit back into its frame - please pm if you know anyone inclined to donate their services or give us the nonprofit rate! It's been way too long since we met in person and lunch today was a perfect beginning! Hopefully the weather will allow for more in person outdoor get togethers. We caught up on our lives and as well as club activities - a table at town day, fall speaker series starting in October, updates about the window restoration project funded by Belmont CPA and updates about our expanded parking space project which has been led by President Wendy Murphy and supported by Andy Rojas, the Historic Commission and the Planning Board. It takes a village! And we ate some
very yummy food.😀

Thanks so much for the before (on right) and after (sort of...) photos. We understand these windows are now at your workshop where on site there you will restore them. Over many years our windows have become inoperable, broken panes, broken sashes and loose in their frames. The wood has also lost its varnish and been beaten down by wind, rain and snow. Homes need love and care and we are so fortunate that Window Woman of New England is here to save the day.

07/20/2021

If you happen to drive by the Homer House, snap a pic for us and tag us - Window Woman of New England has started our window restoration project, one window at a time. When I drove by, a first floor window was being removed. Exciting news! And again, thanks Town of Belmont for approving our project via CPA funds.

And our club membership supports you all especially in these ongoing challenging times!

Winslow Homer print depicting a farm in Belmont in 1858. We got this from Annie Allen's nephew - who lives nearby to the Homer House. Apparently Annie had many prints made of this Thanksgiving Day scene - and the piece he did showing women making havelocks, a print of which is currently hanging in the Homer House. Both were used by Harper's Weekly. Notice that this print has the word Belmont on the wagon - yet Belmont had not yet been incorporated as a town. Notice, too, that the same turkeys seem to be running around Belmont today!

You may recall we were granted Community Preservation Funds Award to restore our windows - and there are SO many reasons to support this wise decision by our committee and Town Meeting Members. The club heartily thanks all involved in the funding process and we can't wait to get folks INSIDE our lovely historic home. Until then, we hope you enjoy (and share!) these photos. Happy New Year and please, stay safe!

Walking around the property a lot these past weeks, we cleaned up a lot - and re-discovered our underground garbage pail... and here is a bit of history sent along by Jean Devine! Feeding pigs with the wet scraps, hysterical.
Women's Equality Day was earlier this week, celebrating a century of women's right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment. #OTD August 28th 1915, when suffragists were still demonstrating for that right they came to Belmont to argue their case. Minnie Mulry spoke to a "throng" in Waverley Square but in reporting the event, the Belmont Tribune only described the sensationalism of it. In fact, Mulry represented a faction of the suffragist movement that favored anti-temperance, that is the right to drink alcohol. She was in the minority, perhaps why she disappears from history after 1915. In 1920, only 8 months separated the 19th Amendment from the 18th that prohibited drinking alcohol nationwide and many women were devoted to both causes. Our commemoration might include acknowledgement that the language of the 19th Amendment did not mention race but initially white women were allowed to vote while black women (and black men for that matter) were denied that right in all of the former Confederate states as well as some in the west. The fight against voter suppression continues... Given the pandemic, the usual hospital lunch and other activities to celebrate nurses have been cancelled.
