Carsie Blanton

Carsie Blanton wrote a sweet song for John Prine

Cried all day, then wrote this. Almost made it through the take without crying!! Borrowed John Prine’s melody and a bunch of his words, like I often do. They’re all embossed on my guts; I wouldn’t know what a song was without his. John, we’ll never thank you enough. #RIPJohnPrine

We love you Clarke County! Thx

Watermelon Park owner John U. Miller Jr. accepted a Resolution of Appreciation from Clarke County Supervisors during their Nov. 19 meeting. Current Watermelon Park Festival producers Dave Van Deventer and Frazer Watkins (back row) joined Bev McKay, Mary Daniel, David Weiss, Barbara Byrd, and Terri Catlett as they honored Mr. Miller and his Watermelon Park for its significant place in the history of Americana, bluegrass, and country music.

John U. Miller Sr. and his wife Rose hosted the first Watermelon Festival in 1942, and it immediately became an annual event with picnics, games, music, and fiddling contests. Early festival performers included the Carter Family and Ralph Stanley. John Miller Sr. presented “Bluegrass Day” at Watermelon Park on Aug. 10, 1960 – an event considered by music historians to be the first-ever, all-day concert dedicated to American roots music. “Bluegrass Day” evolved into bigger and longer festivals with huge crowds and nationally known performers such as Bill Monroe, the Osborne Brothers, Ernest Tubb, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Del McCoury, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, George Jones, and Merle Haggard.

John Jr., who at age 6 began selling watermelons grown by his father, went on to make Watermelon Park and its music festivals his life’s work. Almost eight decades later, Watermelon Park remains a local and national treasure. #ClarkeCountyVirginia #WatermelonPark

..anyone interested in a mandolin class aimed at beginners? “The slowest Mandolin Class Ever” takes place July 13-17. It includes video lessons for 5 tunes(1 per day) and daily live meetings over Zoom. You’ll also get technical advice and have access to all the perks that come with the online music camp. It’s $175 for the week which is a steal compared to private lessons. SIGN UP HERE: https://www.commongroundonthehill.org/traditions-weeks-home.html. My name’s Danny Knicely. I’ve been plying the mandolin for about 30 years. I grew up in a musical family from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, first learning from my grandfather who’d been playing since before either Old-time or Bluegrass got their names. I appear on hundreds of recordings and have performed with Vassar Clements, Mac Wiseman, Charlie Waller, Tim O’Brien, Tony Trischka, Tony Rice, David Grisman, Bruce Molsky, Chance McCoy, Alan Jabbour, Tatiana Hargreaves and many other notable artists in the genres of Bluegrass and Old-time music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=756-_NvWgC8&list=PLD-Xrj-Fcv8w5G8XBE754COkxFFfy0WXQ&index=2
