THIS MUST CHANGE!

When googling "hypermobility," a website page by MedlinePlus came up first (see link below).

The page is titled "Hypermobile Joints," and it was last updated in 2014, yet it's the first page that comes up if someone does a Google search for "hypermobility."

Below are a few excerpts from the Medline Plus Page on Hypermobile Joints. While most of the information is accurate to a certain extent, it does not portray the true severity and multisystemic nature that often occurs with "benign joint hypermobility."

"Considerations

Children's joints are often more flexible than adults' joints. But children with hypermobile joints can flex and extend their joints beyond what is considered normal. The movement is done without too much force and without discomfort.

Thick bands of tissue called ligaments help hold joints together and keep them from moving too much or too far. In children with hypermobility syndrome, those ligaments are loose or weak. This may lead to:

Arthritis, which may develop over time

Dislocated joints, which is a separation of two bones where they meet at a joint

Sprains and strains

Children with hypermobile joints also often have flat feet.

Hypermobile joints often occur in otherwise healthy and normal children. This is called benign hypermobility syndrome.

Rare medical conditions associated with hypermobile joints include:

Cleidocranial dysostosis
Down syndrome
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
Marfan syndrome
Morquio syndrome"

Some people may present "benign," while others are completely disabled, and many live with countless chronic medical conditions and chronic pain - joint hypermobility is far from benign. It presents on a wide-spectrum of symptoms and severity, and most of the causes are far from rare -- EDS being one of them.

Medline's page does not help connect the dots between hypermobility and the long list of comorbid conditions that so many present with -- a list that has been proven by recent research, especially since 2014.

THIS is also why there's issues with misinformation in Medical community on the variety in presentation and seriousness of joint hypermobility. Yes, there's still a lot being debated and the EDS community is working to definitively determine if there's a difference between those who have Ehlers-Danlos Hypermobility (HEDS) and those who have joint hypermobility with no other issues. EDS research previously determined that Hypermobility Syndrome (HMS) and HEDS are one in the same condition. I'm sure there's still debate on that determination as well -- a topic often shared on Joint Hypermobility/HMS/EDS Medical Articles & Research Publications.

There are many types of Hypermobility Syndromes -- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is one of them. Additionally, there are several types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome -- HEDS is one of those types; however, we have yet to determine the genetic cause(s) of HEDS. Research is close, and a lot of headway is being made.

We should expect, at the very least, that updated information as we know it now, should be reflected on "reputable" sites such as Medline Plus -- a site that is associated with NIH and our government.

If you share this post, you need to copy and past this post and then paste it along with your post. Otherwise, if you share this post without copying and pasting my comments, you will only share the link that contains misinformation.
