Eureka! Sometimes that moment of personal discovery comes when you least expect it. Yari’s dream of space flight might just take her to Mars.

"We hope the film has the same impact on other people it had on us; rather than see poo as something to be whisked out of sight, we hope it is now seen as an extraordinary product that can provide clean water, clean energy, help save endangered animals and provide an early warning system when things are going wrong inside our bodies."

“Unlike the film’s human characters – who turn their curious quest for knowledge into an epic spectacle with great existential implications, who dare to risk their reputation and pride to contest that curiosity – AI might not yet possess the ability to empathize. But it can teach us profound things about our humanness – the way we play board games, the way we think and feel and grow. It’s a deep, vast premise, but my hope is, by sharing it, we can discover something within ourselves we never saw before.”

How does the marriage of Social Media and Artificial Intelligence influence how we think and what we believe? Why do false stories spread farther and faster than true? Join Dr. Deb Roy, former Chief Media Scientist for Twitter who now directs the Lab for Social Machines at the MIT Media Lab, for a fascinating and provocative look at how we live in reinforced “bubbles” and whether science and design can help us. In conversation with Kara Miller, host and executive editor of PRI and WGBH’s Innovation Hub.

"We thought this would be an easy charming film, far from the controversial topics we had previously made films about. We thought what could be controversial about science … and then the war on science began, led by the climate change deniers. We thought what could be controversial about a charming gracious elderly woman … and then the war on women broke out with renewed fanaticism and fervor."

What defines “human” in an age of genetic editing, 3D-printed body parts, and AI? As deep brain stimulation creates the capacity to erase memories and even implant new ones, what happens to our identity and moral compass? How does the integration of human and machine change our very nature, and how do we translate new understanding of ourselves into resonant science stories? Five Questions for Filmmakers: Digits (Long-form series)

"We were fortunate to have the opportunity to interview NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in Moscow. He brought the issue of personal privacy into sharp focus with his statement: 'Saying you don’t care about surveillance because you have nothing to hide is like saying that you don’t care about freedom of speech because you have nothing to say. These are fundamental rights.'"

"Cassini’s final moments inspired the story. The Cassini Mission to Saturn, one of the most successful missions in NASA’s history, was coming to an end. NOVA made a commitment to document the extraordinary discoveries the team made, as well as capture the spacecraft’s fiery end."

"The way the scientists talked about the spacecraft was truly endearing. After 20 years it had become a good friend. Having the opportunity to witness its demise with the team was an extraordinary experience. There were many tears."
- Terri Randall, Writer, Producer and Director of 2018 Jackson Hole Science Media Awards finalist 'Death Dive to Saturn' (NOVA l PBS)

Five Questions for Filmmakers: Deep Look (Short Series)

"I hope that it makes folks appreciate how exciting and weird scientific research can be. We don’t get to do too many stories about genetic engineering, because it’s difficult to show the effects of the engineering. So this story was a unique opportunity to talk about genetic engineering in a compelling way."

I had an ongoing email conversation with the guy who coined the term " adaptive camouflage", for the science of invisibility, back in 2005. Philip I. Moynihan of ( at the time) NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena California. He even sent me an autographed diagram of his own work, but I lost it in my last move.
