It works, if you take it: The science behind PrEP

It's time for everyone to know about PrEP for HIV prevention and how it works. Please, share this vital information with everyone you know! #EndTheEpidemic #PrEPworks

We’ve come a long way since the brown-bag HIV drug trials of the early 1990s. Soon, HIV could fade into the backdrop of LGBT life. For many of us over a certain age, it’s difficult to imagine, but Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PrEP, has finally arrived to change the way we think about dealing with HI…

Do you know your status? You need to.

A positive test result does not speak to a person’s character, lifestyle or s*x life. It speaks to the same thing a negative result does — a person’s wellness, and the steps they must take to stay healthy. From the editor, October 2015, 'Stay Well'

What theater means to LGBT culture

Check out Loop Magazine's class photo of LGBT thespians! Not everyone could make the photoshoot, but what a turnout!

I suggested that a photograph of as many LGBT theater practitioners as we could assemble in one place at one time would show the breath and depth of our influence on the Western New York theater scene. I think we achieved that goal.

A revision of LGBT history via Artvoice?

Local longtime LGBT activists are calling into question the validity of a source quoted in an Artvoice story that ran in the June 11 edition, one calling the quote a “revisionist history” of former Buffalo Mayor Jimmy Griffin’s homophobic legacy. Dig a little deeper, however, and it’s tough to tell…

G2H2 Happy Hour - 7/6 - 5:30PM to 8:00PM - BUFFALO DISTILLING COMPANY Who wants some One Foot C**k? BUFFALO DISTILLING COMPANY - A DISTILLERY 100 YEARS IN THE MAKING - In the hills outside of town, where the pavement turns to dirt, Buffalo Distilling Company began hand-crafting One Foot C**k Bourbon Whiskey and One Foot C**k Apple Brandy on our New York State Farm Distillery. Staying true to Buffalo's tradition of hard-working, roll-up your sleeves ingenuity, we have designed and engineered our custom pot still, steam system and mash tank. You will not find another distillery like ours - we are truly one of a kind. ENJOY HISTORY - In 1893, Buffalo was going electric and was recognized nation-wide and world-wide for its innovation. It was during this time that an ambitious businessman named Gustav Fleischmann took control of the E.N. Cook & Company and started Buffalo Distilling Company. Spirits were high and Buffalo Distilling Co made some of the best including Golden Grain Whiskey, 4C's Canadian Style Whiskey, and Old Tom Gin. By 1918 the temperance movement and impending prohibition made the legal production of liquor unprofitable and eventually unsustainable for the Buffalo Distilling Co. putting the company into a century long sleep. Buffalo Distilling Co formally started again 100 years later on our Whiskey Farm Distillery in Bennington, NY. Buffalo Distilling Co. finally returns to the city limits of Buffalo after a 100 year hiatus! Opened in an historic building in Larkinville March 2017, our new location includes a tasting room, cocktail bar, tours, events and new spirits! It’s the first ever fully functioning brewery to be retrofit into an existing grain silo. The former GLF Grain Silo will house the RiverWorks‘ brewery, that will use direct tank-to-tap lines for the three interior bars as well as a fourth bar located in the silo itself, situated directly next to the RiverWorks Beer Garden, which will be constructed amongst the foundational remnants of another former grain silo. The interior space at RiverWorks will hold: a 5,000 person art, entertainment and concert venue; the first permanent, purpose built, flat track roller derby track in the world; a martial arts dojo; four bars; a restaurant and a concession food area; locker rooms for sports leagues; restrooms and a kitchen. This 60,000 sq. ft. space in the main building can also be converted to use for any event, including but not limited to: concerts, banquets, weddings, corporate events of all kinds, sports tournaments, festivals, trade shows, conventions, art demonstrations and non-for-profit fundraiser events. G2H2 Happy Hour will be at LUCKY DAY WHISKEY BAR Friday 4/6/18 5:30 to 8:00PM Every great city has a “whiskey library”, and it’s time that Buffalo gets in on the action. Remember, the whiskey family encompasses bourbon, rye, scotch, etc. There are old world whiskeys and modern whiskeys. Lucky Day will concentrate on old world whiskeys – the bar program will consist of six classic whiskey cocktails at any given time, and ten house cocktails (using non-whisky spirits). It’s interesting to note that this bar already has an old saloon appearance – one that would serve up whiskeys as the drink of choice. The only thing missing is the swinging saloon doors. Lucky Day as sort of an old pole barn type of feel – something that is rustic, comfortable and spacious with plenty of Victorian-era charm, but not overly charming. The menu and the rustic feel – aims to complement the direction of the bar’s focal drink of choice – whiskey. Lucky Day feature 600 different types of whiskeys. There will not be a focus on the craft cocktail movement that we are seeing elsewhere around the city. Lucky Day will focus on hand pies, much the same way Ballyhoo focuses on sausage creations. The couple explained that the half-moon hand pies would be the signature menu item of the bar and restaurant, and would help to draw customers in due to the originality of the staple menu item. Similar to the local pierogi craze, the hand pies will be filled with a wide assortment of ingredients, such as rabbit stew or veggies. Location: 320 Pearl Street, (the old Century Grill & across the street from the Hyatt Hotel). http://www.luckydaywhiskeybar.com Happy Hour are purely social events, Simple come, relax and enjoy. * No Cost to Attend – Cash Bar * Meet New Friends * Socialize * No RSVP * No Programs * No Business Card Exchanges * No Dues. * Just come, relax and enjoy. The turnout for these Happy Hours has been fantastic. Remember to invite your friends, family & colleagues. Thank you. Tom, Michael, Joe, Bruce & Ron
G2H2 Happy Hour 3/2/18 - Vue Roof Top Lounge Back by members request. Curtiss Hotel’s spectacular VUE Rooftop Lounge is like nothing else in Buffalo. Enjoy a cocktail and take in the breathtaking panoramic views of downtown Buffalo, Lake Erie, and the Canadian shoreline. Located on the roof of The Curtiss Hotel is built inside of the renovated historic landmark Harlow C. Curtiss building. The Harlow C. Curtiss Building, is a historic building located at Buffalo in Erie County, New York. The building was named for Harlow Clarke Curtiss, a prominent Buffalo attorney and real estate investor. The building bears resemblance to the works of renowned Chicago architects such as Daniel Burnham and Louis Sullivan, both of whom designed buildings in Buffalo. The Curtiss Building was designed by Buffalo-based architect Paul F. Mann, who was also the brother-in-law of Curtiss. The building is one of the largest terra cotta structures of its type and period in downtown Buffalo. Construction on the building began in 1912 and was finished in 1913.[3] The buildings earliest tenants included the Kittinger Furniture Company. Other occupants included lawyers, stationers, and paramedical companies, but oddly enough not Curtiss' office. G2H2 Happy Hour 12/1/17 5:30PM to 8:00PM The Barrel Factory Come and see the restoration of the landmark 114-year old historic factory in Buffalo’s learndary Old First Ward. Our 3-level brick and beam (45,000 SF) structure is reminiscent of 1890's and early 1900's-era industrial buildings, some of which have been re-purposed over the years, but only a few restored to this extent. Built in 1903 for the Quaker City Cooperage Co. The building's red bricks were made onsite during the factory's construction at its Old First Ward location near the historic Buffalo River and its signature grain elevators. The company manufactured for many decades wooden slack barrels for grain, malt, flour, fruit, and other commodities. At its height, a whopping 4,000-6,000 barrels a day were made there. Wooden barrels were the cardboard boxes, plastic bags, & shipping containers of this period. What started as a run down, crumbling, hopeless-looking, 45,000 square foot building, has suddenly transitioned into a dynamic destination. “Those who saw the building will tell you that it rained heavier inside than outside. “In order to put it all back together, we used as much reclaimed material as possible from the building itself, and from Erie County’s oldest bar (Yankee Hay Barn). We bought the entire barn for its heavy timber construction (American chestnut). The wainscoting that you see here in the central lobby was made with the corrugated metal panels from the former loading dock, which we took down. We turned the loading dock’s I-beams into benches. * Lakeward Spirits - makes its own vodka, Gin, Rum and infusions. will soon be adding Scottish-style whiskys to the mixers with everything being made with New York State produce. * Pressure Drop Brewing: Brewing began after the equipment was installed and tested for the new CRAFT BREWERY. The first of the new tapped craft beers LOCATION: 65 Vandalia Street, corner of Republic & Hamburg Street. Across the Street from Gene McCarthy's Tavern Happy Hour’s are purely social events.
