An important day!

On this day in 1683, the Concord landed in Philadelphia. It carried 13 Mennonite families from Krefeld, who established the first German settlement in the American colonies and called it Germantown. Three-hundred years later, Ronald Reagan proclaimed October 6th to be "German-American Day." If you could thank these families for preserving any piece of German tradition, what would that be?

Dear Federation members, German Community, and all Festival attendees.

After much discussion, it has been decided that the 2020 Buffalo German Fest on Labor Day weekend held at Cheektowaga town park will not take place.

We are very disappointed in this decision, but feel it’s the best for all concerned. For our attendees, vendors, and volunteers.

We will see you next year, for a culture such as this will not allow a virus to kill the tradition!

Alles gute Maitag! Maifest (Mayday) May 1st, is the official celebration that marks the arrival of spring. It's roots are in the Pagan celebration of Walpurgisnacht (April 30), tossing off the darkness and cold of Winter, although now, it's mostly a secular celebration.

Germany's observance of Tag der Arbeit dates back to 1890 when hundreds of thousands of people across Europe, inspired by the Haymarket riots in Chicago, protested on May 1st 1890, demanding better working conditions and the implementation of the eight-hour day.

Despite this movement, it was forty years later at the beginning of the Weimar Republic, that the eight-hour day was agreed upon and trade unions were officially recognised.

Labour Day was established as a German official holiday in 1933 after the NSDAP rose to power. It was supposed to symbolize the new found unity between the state and the working classes. Ironically, just one day later, on May 2nd 1933, all free unions were outlawed and destroyed. But since the holiday had been celebrated by German workers for many decades before the official state endorsement, the NSDAP attempt to appropriate it left no long-term resentment.

In Berlin, one of the largest marches campaigning for workers' rights nationwide takes place on May 1st in the Kreuzberg district. The marches have taken a violent turn in the past, but nowadays, events such as Berlin Myfest have turned the day into more of a festival than a fight.

Thank you Germans for your hard work! Here's to Reinheitsgebot! Prost!

In Germany, today is dedicated to one of Germany’s most popular products: beer. On 23 April 1516, the German “Reinheitsgebot,” or beer purity law, was proclaimed. It is the world's oldest food law. Nowadays, German brewers still comply with the “Reinheitsgebot”.

Alles kaputt!

The southern German state of Bavaria has canceled the Oktoberfest because of the coronavirus. Because the beer festival attracts more than 6 million visitors annually, the authorities feared allowing it to go ahead would lead to a spike in infections.

The Slovenian Police really know how to rock an Oberkrainer!

Na velikonočni ponedeljek, praznik veselja, ko običajno obiščemo svojce in prijatelje, smo obiskali oskrbovance in zaposlene v DSO Brežice in DSO Metlika ter jim zaigrali, zapeli in zaploskali za njihov pogum, dobro voljo, srčnost in predanost. 👏🤝👏👋

Z vedrimi melodijami 😀😁😀 smo jim popestrili negotove dni, ko ne morejo pričakovati obiskov dragih in domačih.

Pred dnevi smo o obisku objavili fotoreportažo, danes pa objavljamo še video utrinek 👀👮‍♀️👮‍♂️👀 z nekaj več glasbene podlage. #ostanitezdravi 🖖
