We are saddened over the news of our beloved Xavier, whom we will never be the same without. Today would have been his 75th Birthday and we all would want him to know how loved he was by us his Ballet family! We love you Xavier and we send so much love to his family. Here is a beautiful memoir of the incredible man we knew as Drosselmeyer written by a longtime friend, Sanford C**n. ♥️

AN INVITATION TO
A DAY OF PEACE AND GRATITUDE
HONORING AND REMEMBERING THE LIFE OF

XAVIER BARRERA

SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 2020*
75 YEARS FROM HIS BIRTH ON AUGUST 15, 1945
IN McALLEN, TEXAS

Be the most ethical, the most responsible, the most authentic you can be with every breath you take, because you are cutting a path into tomorrow that others will follow.Ken Wilber

Xavier came into this world with an assortment of talents that he shared magnificently in and through his day to day living. He touched and impacted the lives of thousands of us, as an educator, an artist of creative expression in dance and music and beautiful natural objects, as a man of communicable love and as an agent of discovery in both head and heart.

His desire was that no formal funeral or memorial service be conducted, and that would not be possible during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic anyway. But the suggestions in this piece lift up some of the skills, traits, qualities and wonders that Xavier shared in his living. They are part of his bequest to us, and together we can rejoice in memory and in anticipation of that which is yet to come through the gifts he continues to share and inspire among those who knew him or simply came into the realm of his countenance.

In grateful memory, we lift some of the lasting gifts that Xavier leaves behind. A suggestion is to hone in on these and other memories that you hold in your heart and savor them in gratitude and peace, one at a time, separated by hours of recollection and reflection, and in each may you discover and travel a pathway of healing of sadness over his unexpected departure from our physical midst. In a very real way, we can let his loving presence live on through us!

Xavier was a person of COURAGE. He was born into unstable conditions in McAllen, Texas and was raised there by his grandparents. At the age of 14, with conviction about the need for education, he left that setting which was the only security he had known and became a student in Presbyterian Pan American School in Kingsville. That takes courage! They believed in him. On top of that, Presbyterian Pan American is where he met his beloved, Orpha. Why don’t we all send a thank you note and gift to Presbyterian Pan American School for being the place that grew mind and heart?

Xavier was MUSIC personified. It came from deep within him. He could translate the emotions of life into music. We can wonder how many voices he has led in school, church and community choirs through his career. We can sing in both our hearts and with our voices in gratitude for the impact of his love of music. Humming or gratefully singing aloud “Happy Birthday dear Xavier” is a joyful remembrance of the music he brought to our souls from his.
Xavier was a BUILDER. A stupa is a balanced stack of flat stones that often marks a pathway, or is an artistic array, or a sacred balance of place and beauty. It’s sometimes simple and sometimes elaborate. Xavier built many across the decades lifting grace, beauty and possibility for all to quietly notice, or not, as passersby. What is it that Xavier built within the wisdom of your mind and heart?
Xavier was the motion of DANCE. On the ballet stage he didn’t need to stand on tippy-toe like others, because he danced character. Who else could be so elegant as the ugly stepmother in Cinderella or Drosselmeyer, the lover of children (and prankster in Xavier’s version) in The Nutcracker? That was the role he played for 22 straight years of his 25 years with the Corpus Christi Ballet. He knew how to entertain. Xavier could uniquely blend firmness and grace in movements among every dancer on the stage at that moment. Let’s do a dance of spirit with him to the freedom from one’s body that Xavier can dance today.

Xavier was CREATIVE, even beyond imagination. He could create in thought, word and action, and there might well be some creative humor added into the mix. Consider being the link as Xavier was between an architect and a multi-million dollar school building in which the lives of young people would be shaped through knowledge, community, challenge and technology that had not even been brought forth yet. Or consider the design and construction of a labyrinth oriented to due north at a particular point in the northern hemisphere. The list of his creative capacities would be long, and they remain with us to enjoy and appreciate in the moment or in the memory. What three things demonstrate Xavier’s creative gifts, and how have they impacted your life. With his inspiration as a creative spirit, what would you like to create? Well, then, get busy! Xavier would already be on it!

Xavier knew you by NAME. He deliberately learned the names of each child in the schools where he was principal and greeted them each morning by name. A child’s name is a recognition and affirmation of being, and it follows us through life. It declares uniqueness as much as does physical appearance. Xavier celebrated the uniqueness of each and every one with whom he came in contact. And with your name he was able to communicate recognition and inclusion with certainty. What a remarkable practice for each of us to take with us, regardless of sometimes failing memory, to celebrate the unique soul force within each person, regardless.

Xavier was the presence of HUMOR wherever he might be. A pun unspoken was an offense to creation. Laughter was a key to wholeness, and a face lit up with a smile and twinkle was evidence of a beating heart. When lightness of heart was needed, Xavier was there to provide it. Let each one of us keep a mirror accessible as we mourn his absence, for there would be no fonder memory than the healing smile we’d see in the mirror.

Xavier was an EDUCATOR by divine calling. He understood the necessity of education in his bones. He did his own preparation and established the means by which we could all grow through learning…something new here…something new there. There was a deep wisdom that flowed in his veins, and it wasn’t defined by courses or workshops, books or comprehensive knowledge. He modeled for us, and we can follow suit, that learning is endless and essential for wholeness but it serves little good if we hoard it for ourselves. What can each of us do to learn something today so that we can share it tomorrow as we learn something further in the sharing?
Xavier lived with deep CONVICTION. Who knows how many marathons he ran that demanded intense conviction at about mile 22, or how many students he patiently guided because he saw potential within them, or how many times he stepped in to assist when there was need that he could fill? In his conviction he could perceive goals, but he could see beyond goals where lay many riches in life. We can be goal oriented, but Xavier’s convictions can move us further. What might that look like?

Xavier quietly savored SPIRIT. How many worship services did he survive, but seemingly through which he grew more deeply in his spiritual understanding. He had an amazing capacity to live his vital spiritual life with neither acclaim nor judgement. He could intricately plan, construct and walk a labyrinth as devotional practice, always ready to sense fresh understanding of God’s movement in his life, God’s guidance without presumption, God’s sufficient healing in the moment. It’s all a matter of trust, openness and discipline, if we will embody those traits as he modeled for us.

Xavier was a LOVER OF LIFE and a lover of all with whom he shared life. His family—Orpha, Lyra and Kiki—his work associates (even the cranky ones), his children for whom he held unique responsibility and their parents (even the ones who caused “trouble”), his choir members (even those who missed rehearsals and those who sang flat), his friends (even the ones whom he did not know and who did not yet know him) all merited love. Sometimes it had to be a patient love; at other times tough love had to be meted out; and at other times it could only be fully demonstrated with a hug that brought heart to heart. Those whom we can’t hug right now might well appreciate a note or call as we seek to celebrate what Lover Xavier allowed us to see through him.

What other TRAITS and QUALITIES of Xavier’s do you remember and celebrate today? Would you share that with Xavier’s family and friends who have been touched by the way Xavier chose to live life just as he touched you? Is there a poignant or memorable story that you would share? We invite you to write it down in the coming month and email it to: [email protected] with the subject “Xavier Barrera” for Xavier’s family to share and cherish.
