We have a new amphitheater and new seating! Plan on bringing blankets or cushions to sit on during the performance as the seating is made of native limestone. Tonight at rehearsal, we also tried out using SMALL bag chairs in the seating area. As you can see, small bag chairs can be accommodated. Please plan to bring something (cushion, blanket, bag chair, etc) with you to sit on during the performance.

Ho for Kansas! Come see the story of Council Grove, the Kaw people and the Santa Fe Trail. This Friday and Saturday!

The Voices of the Wind People pageant presents the historically accurate story of the clash of two cultures, Native American and Euro-American, in the historic setting of Council Grove on the Santa Fe Trail. Chief Allegawaho, Kanza (Kaw) Chief and Seth Hays, Council Grove’s first Euro-American resident, narrate this compelling story. The first production was in 1992, with performances in 1993, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016. The performances take place outdoors in the old Neosho riverbed near historic downtown Council Grove and adjacent to the Santa Fe Trail crossing on the Neosho River. The production incorporates historic photos, images of the prairie landscape, and video images with the live-action of a pack train, wagon train, stagecoach, riders on horseback, tepees and the campfire of a Kanza village. Approximately 30 Kanza Indians of the Kaw Nation, who once lived in the Council Grove area, return to participate in this production. They provide the principal narration of Chief Allegawaho, enact village scenes and perform dramatic roles and traditional dances.

There will be plenty to do while you're in Council Grove for the Pageant this weekend including:
1) Rendezvous at the Mission, from 10AM-5PM Friday and Saturday (Contact: Mark Brooks, 500 N. Mission Street, 767.5410)
2) the re-dedication of the Old Bell/McKinley Monument, significant because the original tablet mentioned that the cornerstone of this monument was laid September 19, 1901 which was the day of President William McKinley's funeral, possibly making it the first monument in the nation dedicated to him, at 9:30 Saturday (at the top of North Belfry Street in CG).
3) the Grassland Grind, a bike race at 10AM (contact: Ricci Ziegler, details can be found on the page);
4) Flint Hills Heritage Days at the High Ground Museum from 10AM - 4PM (contact: Lloyd or Marlene Florence - location: 6 miles NE of Council Grove. There will be signs on the east side of Council Grove directing you);
5) the Council Grove Fall Festival, kids games, barn quilt display, pie judging, cupcake walk, pumpkin painting, etc., from noon-6PM (contact the Council Grove/Morris County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism at 767.5413 or visit www.councilgrove.com);
6) Voices of the Past, a real pioneer story about seven generations of the White Family in Council Grove, which will take place at the 1861 Rawlinson-Terwilliger Home and includes a lunch, from noon - 1PM (contact: Ken/Shirley McClintock, 767.7986, 803 W. Main, reservations recommended);

And, of course, the pageant is this weekend, Friday and Saturday nights at 8PM. Tickets can be bought online (www.voicesofthewindpeople.com), at the Council Grove/Morris County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, or tickets can be bought at the gate the night of each performance.
