Yesterday was our first ever Froshmore Vocal Festival at Doane! Thanks to all the freshmen and sophomore high school students who worked hard throughout the day. Not only did they learn a few dance moves, but they also were greeted by President Hughes and were serenaded by Doane students.

Today’s #SeniorSpotlight is for Teresa Goodwater! Teresa is from Lincoln and will graduate with a degree in history with a minor in psychology. She plays flute in the Doane Concert Band and sings alto in the Doane Choir. Some of her favorite memories are of Dr. Gilbert and Dr. Runestad. “They are two of the best people on the earth. They both cheered me on when I applied for an internship at Disney World and helped me celebrate when I got it! Music classes have always been a shining light in my school days.” Her favorite thing about the music department is the atmosphere. “I know people in band better than most of the people in my major. I love that I got to spend four days a week with my favorite people for my whole time at Doane.” Teresa will start her job search this summer while working as a nanny. Good luck!

We have another #SeniorSpotlight for Ryan Jansen! Ryan is from Omaha and will graduate with a degree in music education. His focus is on vocal music, singing in Doane Choir. He is also the former president of Doane Choir. Some of his favorite memories are from the Doane Choir tour last year singing in amazing spaces like the All Saints Chapel in Sewanee, TN. He as also loved all the shenanigans and fun the other music majors and he has had spending late nights in the work study room. His favorite thing about the music department is how close knit and supportive everyone is. “I love that I can go up to anyone in the department and be congenial with them!”

Today’s #SeniorSpotlight is for Riley Souchek! Riley is from Seward and will graduate with a degree in graphic design with a minor in art. She plays clarinet in the Doane Concert Band and Tiger Pep Band. Some of her favorite memories are from the band tours. “In 2020, we went down to Kansas City and stopped at the National WW1 museum. While we were waiting for all of us to gather for a picture, we started singing one of our marches we were playing for concerts! The other people who were visiting the museum enjoyed it so much, and it made them smile. It was such a wholesome and beautiful thing to experience with your band friends.”

Riley’s favorite thing about the music department is Dr. Gilbert. “He is one of the main reasons I decided to come to Doane. He is so welcoming and always in a good mood. Dr. Gilbert is the kind of person you want to be around all of the time because you know he is going to make your day so much brighter with his bad jokes.”

Riley is currently applying for graphic design jobs in the Lincoln area. Good luck!

It’s time for another #SeniorSpotlight, featuring Michael Coffey!

Michael is from Crete and is graduating with a degree in music education. He currently plays trombone in the Doane Concert band and Jazz Ensemble, but he has also played in the Tiger Pep Band and has sung in Collegiate Chorale. His favorite memory is from the concert band’s tour to Denver, which was especially fun because Phil Gilbert came along. Michael’s favorite thing about the music department is the community and personal relationships with professors and classmates. “It is always a welcoming environment, and the professors care and want everyone to succeed.”

Michael is still looking for jobs, completing applications, and interviewing to find the perfect fit! Best of luck to you!

We are all better for having known Benjamin Temte and David Temte whose time here on Earth was far too short. Richard Burchard composed the song Again and Again to honor these amazing men, performed here by the Cantanti Singers.
I remember the acoustics (1968-69) at the con as being extremely good. Where does the band practice and perform now on campus?
Bosie: aka Brunhilde, love it
