As a teacher and coach of stand-ups, I'm always excited to see them do well after taking my course. One student, who graduated just a few weeks ago, sent a video of his Very First Show to a contest at KROQ and made it into the top ten finalists. With your help, his second show could be opening at the Shrine Auditorium.

Here are the top 10 finalists for Kevin & Bean's April Foolishness 2016 Opening Act contest. The winner will have the opportunity to open Kevin & Bean's April Foolishness featuring Bob Saget, Eddie Ifft, Gabriel… The World Famous KROQ
Dan Wood, a student of mine, and a writer for the Christian Science Monitor has asked for your thoughts.
Dan: I am writing a magazine cover story about the rise of clean comedy. Can you tell me anything you've gleaned from Cary -- or elsewhere -- about what might affect your choice of direction (toward comedy clubs, Kiwanis, chamber of commerce, home events, kids events, the fundraising field, corporate events) -- is/are your choice(s) decided by finances, artistic/personal concerns or other considerations?.
What do you think a magazine story on the rise of clean comedy should include from your perspective. (that if it were missing, would be a glaring omission)?
Is it easier or harder to come up with clean material -- suitable for all ages?

Quite an amazing time. I'm heading off tomorrow to perform for the most unusual crowd ever. I'll be entertaining a group of native elders from Columbia who are leaving the mountain they've lived on for thousands of years to come and educate us on how to live in more harmony with the earth. Check out this amazing movie on them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq0kWs1q3hI
I saw this 25 years ago and never dreamed I'd meet them, let along have a chance to perform comedy for them. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hey Comedy Junkies,
I've got a monthy show in Ojai that you've got to see! I'll bring up one of my bigtime pro friends and we'll try out stuff for the first time! It's worth the drive because Ojai is crazy pretty. It's like Switzerland with hippies!

Hi guys,
You might be checking out this page to learn about what I teach and why you might be interested. If you love stand-up, then we're in the same boat. I've been performing since I graduated from college, and that was a LONG time ago. I spent decades living in clubs and touring the country. I still perform and I'm still learning.
Stand-up is one of the biggest highs. That's why we do it. Doing it wrong can be frustrating and make you stop before you've really gotten good.
I started the Stand-Up Workshop to help people get to the good the first time.
That doesn't come from just being a cheerleader. I think encouragement is really important, but from what I hear from folks who've taken other courses, encouragement is all they get. No direction, no form, no clue on how to put a solid set together. There's an ART to this and those of us who've bled to learn it know all about it. But not everyone knows how to teach it, even if they can do it themselves.
Every comic has their own persona onstage and they might have a different rhythm, but we're all after one thing. Hooking the audience and taking them on a ride that gets wilder and wilder until you blow the roof off the room. There's strategies to do that. There's technique involved and I LOVE teaching that.
I think the class is pretty good, and I've got students who keep coming back who tell me the same thing. I'm not going to dis other teachers. Heck, a few of them have been students of mine.
It's a tough world onstage, but it's the best fun there is. I'd like a chance to show you around.
Thanks,
Cary Odes
