Niagara County Legislator Chris Robins Says “Let the Kids Play”
Niagara County Legislator Chris Robins today called on New York State to update its guidance on organized youth sports to allow practices to begin immediately.
“It’s time to let the kids play,” said Robins, father of two youth baseball players. “With everything that has reopened including the most recent guidelines that allow for group gatherings of up to 25 people, holding back on the ability of youth sports teams to hold outdoor practices simply makes no sense.”
Robins said initially everyone believed that league play would not be allowed until July 6 but practices could start now. However, yesterday the state further clarified that formal practices would not be allowed until then either.
“This recent clarification on practices has caused chaos,” said Robins. “You can have 12 kids show up to a baseball diamond to hit the ball around and that’s fine. But put on a jersey and have the coach run the practice and suddenly you are in violation. So now, informal practices being supervised by parents are popping up.”
“Youth sports organizations have been planning to adhere to social distancing and other guidelines once sports resume. I think it would be much safer for everyone to have these organizations running these practices rather than the patchwork that is going on now.”
Coaches:
As New York State moves forward in its reopening process, just a quick update on the Boys of Summer league. We are sure many of you are thinking the same thing – time to play baseball! We are optimistic that the ability to play will happen in July and plan to take advantage of every opportunity. With that in mind, we intend to start league play July 5. See below for full details.
As of today, youth sports fall into the recreation category, which is listed in phase 4, currently on target for Western New York for July 1.
Once reopening occurs, we are fully expecting there will be a set of mandates and guidelines imposed by the state on both teams and facilities similar to those now imposed in Ohio and Pennsylvania. We intend to move as quickly as possible to adhere to those requirements. Hopefully, as has been evidenced a few times recently, New York has made better than expected progress and plans have moved forward quicker than anticipated – at least for certain activities.
As far as the league schedule - we intend to Start July 5 and run through August 16th. Abbreviated playoffs will be TBD in mid-August. Teams that are concerned about playing into August based on fall sports can certainly block out those August dates in their availability. We'll pack as many games into July as possible for those teams.
We are sure many of you have packed tournaments into this time-frame as well given everything that's been postponed. Our intent is to get everyone a 10 or 12 game schedule (TBD once we get everyone's availability and assess what is possible) as a base with those who have the room getting more up to the full 16. Unlike prior years where we expected all teams to be able to schedule a full 16 games, we certainly understand some teams, now with a compressed schedule, may be stretched to get to that number. These are unprecedented circumstances. As such we are more concerned about teams making something out of their summer team plans, even if it means some may not be able to schedule the full set of games.
To make this possible, we will need all coaches to complete their team availability and home field information by June 19th. We will have preliminary schedules out the following week. Unlike prior years, we expect there will need to be some updates once the final schedule goes out to account for facilities that don't open right away as well as any curve balls New York State might throw in delaying our start. If we wait for 100% of the answers before we start scheduling, we will never get to a playable schedule or any kind.

A letter to a 2020 Cooperstown baseball player
Dear 12 year old, You just received the news that you won’t be going to Cooperstown. It hurts, it is disappointing, but I promise it does not define the baseball...
The true definition of a picture is worth a thousand words…
As a result of the governor's mandate to close all gyms in New York State for at least the next two weeks, our Depew and Blasdell facilities will be closed through at least May 1st.
As much as we would like to remain open as a means for children to get out of the house, not to mention the financial impacts of closing, it is impossible to provide a risk free environment for our customers and staff.
Baseball and softball training requires use and sharing of equipment that just cannot be safely disinfected. Dozens of people are touching baseballs and softballs every hour. When you then consider the amount of equipment that players tend to share and the horseplay and general contact that tends to happen when training and participating in sporting activities, this decision, although very difficult, is required.
Once we reopen, we will work to get everyone ready for the start of their seasons. See everyone in a couple weeks!
