We can't always tell what our mood is based on a single day, just as we can't know for certain which season we're in based on the weather; one cold day in the fall doesn't mean it's winter, and one day of feeling lousy doesn't mean we're depressed. We look for patterns in our emotions and behavior and clusters of symptoms to figure out if we're depressed.

Shania has a deep passion for mental health that stems from personal experience and seeing others around her struggle with mental health and addictions. Shania does most of her advocacy and volunteer work with the Canadian charity Jack.org, and is involved in a variety of their programming. Shania was born and raised in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and is an indigenous woman from the Dog Rib Rae band. She is a currently in her fourth year of her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Aurora College. She has a deep passion for mental health that stems from personal experience and seeing others around her struggle with mental health and addictions. At first, they can seem pretty darn intimidating. You walk into a sparse studio with mirrors everywhere and everyone in class seems to be skinny, best friends with one another, and knows exactly what to do in class all of the time. Yikes!

Could zero-sum thinking be the reason you've got less than others? Definitely. Here's why.

Imagine you're in a classroom. The teacher announces an upcoming test will determine 100 percent of your grade and is going to be graded on a curve. That means, the worse other's do compared to you, the better your grade will be. Would you help your classmates' prepare? Studies show your answer is likely "no." It's called zero-sum thinking, i.e., when someone wins, someone else must lose. Unfortunately, many people look at life with zero-sum thinking -- and it's working against them.

If you need a bubble bath, a glass of wine, or a massage then that is absolutely the self-care you should seek out. Absolutely nothing wrong with it! If you need a day curled up under a warm blanket binging the latest season of Grey’s Anatomy or This is Us, hey GO FOR IT and pass the ice cream while you’re at it.

But, on the other hand, if you need to learn how to manage your anxiety in a new, more effective way. Or you need to manage stress, get over a heartbreak, date smarter, make new friends then we believe passionately that is the self-care you deserve.

We believe that first and foremost self-care should be personal and personalized. That it should be as unique as you are, it’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all situation. Just like going to the doctor doesn’t result in us coming out with identical prescriptions, self-care shouldn’t be the same for each of us.
