Automobile Driving Museum http://www.automobiledrivingmuseum.org Car Museum That Takes Their Guests For Rides 610 Lairport Street. El Segundo, CA 90245
Automobile Driving Museum was founded in 2001 by Earl Rubenstein and Stanley Zimmerman, long time automobile collectors and friends. They had dreamed about a museum that allowed the public to actually sit in and experience riding in a Classic and Special Interest Vehicle. For many years, Rubenstein and Zimmerman would attend classic automobile exhibits and car shows where nearly every vehicle displayed a “LOOK, BUT DO NOT TOUCH” sign. Their philosophy on the other hand was to permit visitors to climb into the rumble seats, sit behind the steering wheels and reminisce about their first or desired automobile. On occasion, when someone requested rides, they would make special arrangements to accommodate. In 2001, when a garage in West Los Angeles became available, they formed the Automobile Driving Museum. The mission: to give the public an opportunity to experience classic and special interest automobiles as moving vehicles and historic art forms. In addition, to preserving and maintaining orphan vehicles no longer being manufactured such as Studebaker, Packard, Stutz, and Nash AMC. The Automobile Driving Museum moved to its present location at 610 Lairport Street in El Segundo in 2007 .The museum occupies over an acre of land and has 40,000 square feet for automobile display, storage, repair, and restoration. The museum also has large meeting rooms and party spaces available for rent. It is open Tuesday through Sunday 10:00AM to 4:00 PM. On Saturdays the public is invited to touch and sit in cars and on Sundays to ride with docent drivers in their dream vehicle on public streets near LAX.

Unique Car Museum and Event Venue that gives rides to guests every Sunday!

Mission: The ADM exists to preserve automotive history, interpret the historical significance and provide visitors with the opportunity to take a ride in one of the museum’s historic, classic and antique automobiles. By doing this, we will enrich the lives of all people seeking to grasp the importance of automotive history by providing a facility where one can get a feel of the past. The museum also serves as a central meeting place for car clubs, car enthusiasts and the community. The museum maintains an accurate source of reference material on the history of cars and the automotive industry.

Our museum has transitioned to online activity only until it is safe to gather here again.

We continue to work behind the scenes but we need your help in order to reopen our doors when restrictions are lifted!

Happy Monday All!!! We hope you had a great weekend and ready to get back to work!

Check out this 1929 Durant Two Door Coupe!

A bit of the Durant History.
William Durrant served as a general manager of the Buick Motor Company in 1903.

In 1904 Buick sold the company to Durrant.

In 1908 Durant, with Buick as a base, purchased Cadillac and formed General Motors.

Later that year GM purchased Oldsmobile.

In 1908, Durant purchased Elmore, Oakland and several other auto makers.
Later in 1909 Durrant tried to arrange an $8 million deal to buy Ford but the bankers turned him down.

The large amount of debt taken on in the companies acquisition caused the Board of Directors of GM to dismiss Durant in 1910.

The next year, Durant started the Chevrolet Motor Car Company and concurrently purchased a controlling interest in GM, once again becoming it’s general manager.

Shortly after the new vehicle market collapsed, Durant lost control again, this time for good.

In 1921, Durant established the new Durant Motors with the Durant, Star, Flint, and Eagle, as competitors to the range of models offered by General Motors.

Happy Tuesday all!!
We hope this message finds you well!

Take a look at this vintage 1904 Schacht Auto-Runabout!

In the late 1890s, William and Gustav Schacht operated a business that produced and sold horse-drawn farm wagons and carriages.

During the early 1900s, they studied combustion engines and the related “horseless carriage” phenomenon.

In 1904, they installed a water-cooled, two-cylinder 10 horsepower gasoline engine into their best, to passenger, hi wheeled buggy.

Power was transferred to the rear wheels with a chain drive assembly.

The first steering wheel (insisted of a tiller) used in the US and was on the 1899 Packard.

A tiller was a lever that operated the steering assembly. The steering wheel concept did not catch on right away, but the Schacht brothers liked it and installed one on their new vehicle.

Customer orders begin to come in and the Auto- Runabout became a success.

In 1908 the new Ford motor company started production of the model T, and general motors was formed from Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Buick and others.

Local financiers rush to Ford and GM, leaving little support for Schacht.

Unable to compete in the auto-market, the company transitioned to trucks only production from 1914 until closing in 1940.

Happy Monday!
We hope this week is a good one for you!

Take a look 👀 at this 1926 Pontiac 2 Door Coach!!!

During the early 1920s, General Motors evolved a marketing plan where it’s line of car models would represent fairly even steps in cost from basic to luxury.

In 1926, GM introduced the Pontiac as an inexpensive six-cylinder “companion” to GM’s more costly Oakland.

This step in the plan was a huge success for two reasons.

First, Pontiacs six cylinder engine was a popular step up in power as compared to the four cylinder Fords.

Also, the new body style was a clear winner over the Ford model T, which had been the same since 1909.

Pontiac eclipsed Oakland in total sales in its first year! In fact, by 1931 Oakland produced 9000 cars, while Pontiac produced almost 85,000!

This led to the termination of Oakland.
Pontiac barely survived the depression, probably due to the fact that GM, in 1926, began cross-divisional sharing of manufacturing and automobile bodies. Because of this management success, the concept was expanded from Pontiac/Chevrolet to all the GM divisions.

Our museum car was purchased purchased in Hershey, PA. It’s all original, including the upholstery.

Take a look at this 1955 NASH Rambler Cross Country!!!

A little history about the NASH.

Transportation issues encountered by the US military during World War II lead to dramatic improvements in the American highway system after the war.

During that time families got larger and there was a surge in the closely related station wagon market.

With better roads, and gas at $.23 a gallon, people wanted to enjoy the rapidly growing popularity of cross country family vacations.

In 1954, Nash merged with Hudson and formed the American motors corporation AMC.

Crucial marketing decisions included the elimination of the large Hudson models and an increased focus on smaller and more economical models.

For 1955, the Rambler cross country station wagon, with low first cost and operating expenses, was an excellent answer.

With its small engine and manual transmission, it could go a long way on a tank of gas.

As time went by, the station wagon became known as the “American Family Car”.

In a wise marketing effort, AMC became a sponsor of the new October 1955 weekly Disneyland television show, which became one of the most-watched in America.

We Love Buick Grills. ❤️❤️❤️

Take a look at this 1949 Buick Super Woody!

The Buick Super Woody was based on the larger Buick Roadmaster, but has a smaller wheel base because space for the engine was reduced.

Although the round vents in each front fender were first used on the 1948 Roadmaster, they became a Buick trademark starting in 1949.

These “VentiPorts” were used on all Buick models from 1949 through the 1950s, and in varied forms, into the 1980s.

The Barn Find. A 1959 Ford Ranchero. Occasionally a car collector goes into a barn or storage building and finds a car.

Typically it was driven or pushed inside when it became no longer serviceable. Our 1959 Ford Ranchero was owned by a teenager who died in a tragic accident.

Besides themselves with grief, his parents parked his Ranchero outside in a storage lot where it remained for more than 30 years.

It was started every few weeks throughout the 30-year duration, so it remains in running condition.

We present this vehicle to tangibly illustrate the concept of a barn finds. We hope this post finds you well in these times of unprecedented challenges.
