Whats the real story behind ITK Culinary? I'll tell you now. As an immigrant to this great land, I never gave food too much of a thought. I appreciated whatever my mother made and as the youngest got to hang out (they really didn't have day care back then). And as that extra set of hands in the kitchen, she taught me things I had no idea would shape ITK Culinary.
The back story is the same for millions of others. The only opportunity it seemed was through selling a plate of food. My early memories of making Char Sui Bao and Egg Custard Bao at our breakfast table on Friday nights is clearly etched in my mind. My eldest brother would be saddled with lifting the heavy stuff, my sister in total control of us "kids" then mom and dad kneading the dough and filling the buns. I recall my father pulling out the scale and carefully measuring the baking soda, yeast, salt, etc. It seemed like such careful science (because it was) that I vowed one day to be able to use this device.
This was our business and it opened the door for more flavors and experiences. When the family delivered to San Francisco, my parents would always treat us to a meal at Asia Garden for Dim Sum or The Hof Brau where Wilkes Bashford now site. Chinatowns close proximtiy to North Beach meant we got to visit Victoria Pastry and as a kids this was sensory overload.
Fast forward through 20 years of corporate HR work where I was fortunate enough to travel extensively. The flavors if Rome, London, Nice are etched in my mind. The grocery stores were Disney-esqe experiences where you never knew what treasure you might find. Then during my bout with personal issue, I had to find something new to do.
