Because of Them We Can by Eunique Jones

“In honor of #VeteransDay, today’s #WCW is Marcelite J. Harris, the first black female major general in the US military. While in the Air Force Academy, she became the first female aircraft maintenance officer and one of the first two female commanding officers. Harris also worked as a White House social aide and personal staff officer under Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. In 1997, she retired from the Air Force as the highest-ranking female officer in the Air Force and the nation’s highest-ranking black woman in the Department of Defense. She was recently buried in Arlington National Cemetery to rest in power. We honor her memory today and everyday. Happy Veterans Day. Let us lift her up in the light of goodness and hold her there.” - @gabunion

We couldn’t have said it better. Happy Veterans Day to all who have served! #BecauseOfThemWeCan

ATTN: HLL Announcement

Family!

We are proud to announce the kickoff of our Gateway Initative: "Path to Leadership."

In this program HLL will select high school seniors and send them to the college of their choice! Our next generation of leaders need us to invest in them. HLL will provide the resources necessary to allow these future leaders to flourish and in turn they will create opportunities for generations to come! As you all know "It Takes a Village" to succeed and in these uncertain and tumultuous times, our high school seniors can use all of the extra help that we can offer. Our goal is to help 10 high school seniors! We want you to be a part of that.

Remember... It takes a village! Love you all!

I'll get us started with our first $500

Protecting the Beaches with Balloons: D-Day and the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion

The 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion, the only unit that stormed the beach at Normandy on June 6, 1944, that was comprised entirely of African American soldiers, played a vital role in protecting the ships and soldiers during the D-Day invasion.

The 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion was the only U.S. Army African-American unit to storm Omaha Beach on D-Day. They fought bravely alongside the 1st Infantry Division to protect the beaches with their hydrogen-filled balloons, preventing German aircraft from diving in to attack the beaches. Although the story of the 320th isn't widely known, we will never forget. #DUTYFIRST #WWII #DDAY

Fighting Germans and Jim Crow: The role of black troops on D-Day

Roughly 2,000 African American troops are believed to have hit the shores of Normandy in various capacities on June 6, 1944. Serving in a U.S. military still-segregated by race, they encountered discrimination both in the service and when they came home.

In 1920, Bessie Coleman was told she couldn’t have a pilot’s license—she Triumphed Benjamin Davis was silenced at West Point—he Triumphed Charles Bolden was told by Strom Thurmond that he would never be nominated to an Academy, an blocked him. General Bolden graduated USNA, became an astronaut, and NASA’s Administrator. I’m humbled to share these stories and more tonight with a keynote as we celebrate Black History Month and honor our nation’s pathfinders. #nbcfaene #legacyweekend #BHM #blackaviators #blackhistorymonth2018
