օգնել Հայաստանի Մանկական քաղցկեղի և արյան հիվանդությունների կենտրոնում բուժում ստացող մեր երեխաներին։🎗 Անչափ շնորհակալ ենք Մարիային, բոլոր կազմակերպիչներին, հովանավորներին, աջակիցներին, կամավորներին և, իհարկե, մասնակիցներին` պատրաստակամության և հոգատարության համար։ Միայն միասին կարող ենք կյանքեր փրկել 💛 🃏 By the initiative of one of the Board members of City of Smile USA, Maria Nagapetyan, on October 17, a Charity Poker Tournament was held in Glendale, USA. All the proceeds of the Tournament were donated to City of Smile Foundation to cover the treatment costs of children and young adults with cancer and blood disorders. The atmosphere during the evening was very competitive, but at the same time all the participants were united by a common goal: to help our children receiving treatment at the Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Armenia.🎗 We are very grateful to Maria, all the organizers, sponsors, supporters, volunteers and, of course, the participants for their willingness and care: Lion's Partners Insurance Agency, Inc., LA Pitboss, Papisiano, Polkatots Cupcakes, Stars On Brand 🤝 Only together we can save lives! 💛 Ester Demirtshyan 💜 #cityofsmile #ժպիտներիքաղաք #charitypokertournament #charity #pokertournament #joinus #միացեքմեզ #togetherwecan #միասինկարողենք #fightcancer #հաղթահարենքքաղցկեղը

On Sunday the Armenian Entertainment Group held a sold-out, inaugural Armenian Influencer Awards ceremony at the Stars On Brand banquet hall in Glendale. The beautifully renovated venue added lavender hue to the evening faces of the gathered, creating an intriguing ambiance. The sophisticated fare of the venue was light yet satiating. With a quick line at the bar, the affair had a lot of promise; and given that it was the start of the LGBTQ Pride month, we were happy to witness some teachable moments for the Armenian community. The frilly event was meticulously planned by PanArmenian.TV producer and host, our good friend Ara Kazaryan and his protege, host of Los Angeles based show Good Morning Armenians, gleeful Mher Baghdasaryan. The diversity of the participants and attendees added a welcome balance in generally “traditional” feel of similar events. But the ghost of “LGBTQ intolerance past” lightly haunted the festivities. The premise of the awards was to celebrate the current influence of Armenians of notoriety in the media, culture, politics and business. As it wasn’t a charity event, the influence of business sponsors was tastefully trumpeted in all aspects of the program. The honorees were a medley of who’s who of the Armenian diaspora, generally popular with the last few waves of Armenian immigrants and their offsprings. The evening was opened by a performance of sisters Inga and Anush Arshakyans who were Armenia’s official representatives to 2014 Eurovision song contest. You may remember them for their homophobic comments about the 2014 Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst. In expressing their attitudes towards the trans contestant in an interview -as official representatives, they bragged how they awarded Conchita the lowest possible scores, then one of the sisters added: “like a mental patient causes repulsion, so does this phenomena’’. After mounting criticism from E.U. and social media, the sister-act publicly apologized. They stated that they had “...no negative attitudes towards g**s, trans individuals, mental health patients.” Ironically, their statements were a catalyst for a sequence of events that led to an anti-discrimination lawsuit being filed at The European Union Court of Human Rights, Minasyan vs. Armenia. The lawsuit in which the Republic of Armenia is the defendant, may eventually beget to E.U. mandated LGBTQ protection laws in Armenia. It was good seeing them on the same stage as the LGBTQ presenters who stole the show next. Introducing the winner of “the most influential reality tv star of the year”, Peggy Sulahian, who was the 100th housewife of the Real Housewives franchise, were handsome husbands Arthur Gourounlian and Brian Dowling. You may remember Peggy as the estranged sister of celebrity-couturier Pol Atteu who is a longtime member of the Gay and Le***an Armenian Society and Equality Armenia. Peggy was accused of homophobia when her brother Pol claimed that she shun him out of their fathers’ funeral because he was gay. The scandal ultimately ended the Orange County housewife’s one-season run on Bravo. Arthur and Brian’s introduction had a symbolic meaning for Peggy Sulahian as she has repeatedly attempted to dispel the allegations of homophobia. Armenian born Arthur is a creative director and choreographer who has worked with multi-platinum megastars while his husband Brian burst into the scene after winning the U.K. reality show Big Brother. He then became the first openly gay host of children’s television show SMTV Live. Recently Brian has hosted The Real Housewives of Cheshir. In 2015 they were married in a lavish ceremony in Ireland as the first celebrity same-sex couple, immediately after the public voted for marriage equality at the ballot box. Having friends like Arthur and Brian introduce reality TV star Peggy Sulahian was a bittersweet redemption for her. Tales of redemption were a reoccurring theme at the award ceremony. Former Mayor of Glendale and current Councilmember Zareh Sinanyan, who was honored at last year’s Equality Armenia Leadership Council for his commitment to LGBTQ equality was a recipient of “the most influential politician” award. Sinanyan has recently accepted an official position with the Republic of Armenia and will be resigning from his position in Glendale in the near future. As the news of his new position with the government of Armenia has spread, Sinanyan has already faced accusations of being an LGBTQ sympathizer. Paradoxically, the councilmember had faced accusations of homophobia when he first ran for office in Glendale and again during his re-election campaign in 2017. The accusations stemmed from a gay slur Sinanyan had used in an online quarrel in 2011. Sinanyan has since publicly apologized and committed to LGBTQ equality. In 2017, Sinanyan co-introduced a anti-discrimination resolution in the City of Glendale by proclaiming that “The representatives of the LGBT community are our brothers, sisters... family members and they deserve nothing short of equal rights.” The only way for the former mayor to thrive in his new position in Armenia is to stand resolute on LGBTQ equality despite the political winds of the day. Besides ANCA-WR Board of Directors Chair Nora Hovsepian, the biggest name in awardees was Michael Aram who was not present. Father of two, the successful luxury homeware designer who happens to be gay had sent a video acceptance instead. Michael Aram’s generous support of the Armenian Church is somewhat of a hypocritical catch 22 for The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin whose Communications Ministry infamously forged Los Angeles based Father Fazken Movsesian’s signature on a doctored letter announcing his resignation from the Board of Equality Armenia. Regardless, Micheal Aram’s commitment to Armenian causes is absolutely commendable. Overall, the evening was a joyous celebration with Armenians from all walks of life, and especially for the LGBTQ community. Some attendees who are active members of the diaspora, yet not “out”, were feeling safe and cozy with their long-term, same-sex “roommates”. It is good to see them being comfortable together in public, but they all have a solemn responsibility to stand up for their brothers and sisters in Armenia who do not have the luxury of living in a country that protects their rights. It is a duty, and now is the time.
