Recently, fourth graders started working in Book Taco, an incentive program to encourage reading in the classroom. Mrs. Crump loves Book Taco and so do her students!

"Students can take quick quizzes to check their comprehension, but they can do so much more. That's one of the reasons I love it! There are tons of activities to accompany each book. There are vocabulary games, writing prompts, book reviews, book notes and more. For those students that are comfortable typing, there are multiple writing prompts available for students to respond to what they've read. I can give feedback to each student individually with a message and award game tokens to them. I can also make editing suggestions and have the students submit their work again."

Mrs. Owens' AP Environmental Science class is investigating how energy is transferred through food webs. This week, they dissected owl pellets to separate the various bones, teeth, talons, and skulls. From the bones, students then were able to identify the owls' food sources.#valwoodschool #valwoodupperschool

Valwood 7th grade history students begin the school year studying the earliest people to arrive in North and South America. Students learn how different Native American tribes adapted to their culture based on where they settled. One common factor is a history of writing with symbols. These symbols could be left on rock walls, on pottery, or in the weaving of blankets. Students were asked to either write a short story of life as a Native child or create a Navajo blanket pattern using some of the most common symbols. The students did a great job imagining life during this time and created some interesting stories and blanket patterns. #valwoodschool #valwoodmiddleschool

Valwood seniors are currently studying the biological component of behavior in AP Psychology. To begin the unit the students study the basic building block of all neural activity, the neuron. While their instructor went over the parts and functions of the neuron, the class labeled a chart and then used play-doh and bendable straws to construct a physical 3-D model. This provided both a great visual and physical model to really understand the parts of a neuron, and also provided a chance for some fun and creativity. #valwoodschool #valwoodupperschool #valwoodclassof2021

Most of you probably know our next #behindthemask spotlight, Mrs. Shonie Thomas. Before she became the Upper School Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Thomas, provided assistance in all three divisions and in Crane Hall. Her daughter, Lindsay, graduated from Valwood in 2019 and her son, Aaron, is a sophomore. Both of her children began attending Valwood in pre-K. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, going to the beach and spending time with her family and friends. We asked Mrs. Thomas what she likes most about working at Valwood: “I have been so inspired and amazed by the resiliency of the students and staff as we began this very different school year. They have shown grace and patience and have persevered. I think this will be a great school year for us all and I am so proud to be a part of it!” #behindthemask #valwoodschool #triedandtrueorangeandblue

I love their eagerness to learn and the conversations and classroom discussions we have in literature each day. I also love all of the wonderful people I get to work with, they have made me feel so welcome and I look forward to coming to work every day. It truly is a happy place to be. Finally, it has been a blessing to have my son, Walker, as a part of the Valwood family as well.
