All American Music Pre-Election Day Concert & Collaboration with the Ellipsis Trio, Sunday, November 6, 2016, 2PM

A pre-Election Day All-American Composers concert will be performed by the Essex Chamber Music Players (ECMP) and Ellipsis Trio 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 6 in the Hartleb Technology Center on Northern Essex Community College’s Haverhill campus, 100 Elliott St.

The Ellipsis Trio is a piano trio residing in Cambridge, MA that brings delight to all, from those who ever felt a twinge of nostalgia listening to a Schubert melody, to those who might tap a foot to Aretha Franklin.

On this concert program are Piano Trio, Op.150 by Amy Beach (1867-1944)- the first established American women composer, Piano Trio No.2 in Bb Major, Op. 65 by Arthur Foote (1853-1937), Three Spirituals for Flute and Piano by Evelyn Simpson-Curenton (b.1953) and Homage To Poulenc, Mozart and MacDowell for Flute, Cello and Piano by Emma Lou Diemer (b. 1927.)

Both Beach and Foote are members of the well-known nineteenth century Boston Six composers, America’s first classical music composers. Diemer composed Homage To Poulenc, Mozart and MacDowell for ECMP in 2005.

Michael Finegold, flutist and artistic director of ECMP feels, “It’s a wonderful idea to soothe the American soul with beautiful American music before voting on Election Day, November

William Thomas McKinley, Jazz-Loving Composer, Dies at 76

William Thomas McKinley's obituary in the New York Times, quite the recognition. Essex Chamber Music Players are grateful to have had Tom as our composer in residence for the past 5 years. We have works of his to record and perform again.

A hallmark of Mr. McKinley’s music was his acute sensitivity to the tonal possibilities of each instrument.

Essex Chamber Music Players Concert to Benefit Dana Farber in Memory of Joni A. Finegold, Sunday, June 22, 2014, 2 PM, Hartleb Tech Center, Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill, MA 018130

When Michael Finegold lost his daughter Joni Alicia Finegold to cancer in 2012 he found solace in what he knew best – music. The former Northern Essex Community College music professor and founder and artistic director of the Essex Chamber Music Players in residence at NECC, is sharing the pieces he created, some based on poems written by his late daughter, during a concert to benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute on Sunday, June 22, at 2 p.m.
The performance will be held in the Hartleb Tech Center on Northern Essex’s Haverhill campus, 100 Elliott St. Tickets are $25. This event, which is open to the public, will showcase world-famous musicians.
The concert will feature clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and violinist Andrew Kohji Taylor, joined by soprano Adriana Repetto, cellists Emmanuel Feldman, Timothy Roberts, Patrick Owen, pianists Lois Shapiro, David Pihl, Stephen James and flutist Michael Finegold.
Broadway stars Jenny Powers, an Andover native, and her husband Matt Cavenaugh will perform Broadway selections. Pianist Robert “Bob” Lague, former choral and musical director of Andover High School will accompany them.
The program will premiere five works written in memory of Joni Finegold, who died in 2012 of lung cancer at age 42. She left two children, then ages 6 and 11, as well as her husband and family.
The premiere works are “Of Memories…Of Love: Summer 1978” by Elliott M. McKinley; “Lament for Joni” and “Making Sense of It All - Reflections on Cancer” (based on poems by Joni Finegold) both by Michael Finegold; “It’s Time to Let Go” (poem by Diana Finegold) by William Thomas McKinley; and “Warm Summer Sun” by Peter R. Farmer (poem by Robert Richardson)
Lillian Finegold-Sachs, Joni’s daughter, will sing “Mothers”, which she composed.
Michael Finegold noted that “the concert, besides being a memorial-benefit, provides insight into the minds of people with cancer.” He added that many of the performers and composers knew Joni.
All the proceeds will go to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The performers are donating their services. A seven-foot Schimmel concert grand piano is being donated for the concert performance by Darrell’s Music Hall in Nashua, NH.
Additional contributions are welcomed and can be made at the concert, online or by check. For additional information, go to www.ecmp.org.

Stoltzman and Kohji Taylor to join ECMP for McKinley world premiere

World-famous clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and virtuoso violinist Andrew Kohji Taylor will join the Essex Chamber Music Players on May 19 to present the world premiere of Streets of New York by William Thomas McKinley.

The 2 p.m. program will be held in Northern Essex Community College’s Hartleb Technology Center in Haverhill.

“McKinley’s brilliant work was inspired by his visits to New York City for concerts of his music,” said flutist Michael Finegold, ECMP artistic director and an Andover resident. McKinley lives in Reading.

“Its 10 movements have charming descriptive titles, such as Flights of Fancy, All the Little Children Playing, Hot Nights of Dancing and The Speed of Light, a reference to wild taxi rides,” he noted. “The old-time favorite tune, Sidewalks of New York, is used throughout.”

Stoltzman, a Winchester resident, is a two-time Grammy Award winning clarinetist.

“His virtuosity, technique, imagination and communicative power have revolutionized the world of clarinet playing, opening up possibilities for the instrument that no one could have predicted,” Finegold said.

“Andrew Kohji Taylor is expanding an international reputation by captivating audiences with probing musical insight, luminous tone, expressive phrasing and technical mastery,” he added. Taylor lives in Brookline.

The performance will be a reunion of sorts for Stoltzman, McKinley and Finegold, who were in the same Yale School of Music graduate class. Kohji Taylor also is a Yale School of Music graduate.

“Tom McKinley has dedicated Streets of New York to ECMP and the performers, who will include the excellent cellist Emmanuel Feldman,” Finegold said. Feldman is a Newton resident.

The program also includes Duo for Flute and Clarinet by Carl Vollrath, Concerto a Tré for Clarinet, Violin and Cello by Ingolf Dahl, and the Passacaglia (Duo for Violin & Cello, after Handel) by Johan Halvorsen.

An audience question-answer period will follow with the composer and players.
General admission is $15, and $10 for seniors, $5 for students, and free for Northern Essex students (college ID required). The center is located at 100 Elliott St., Haverhill.
