The Scorpion's Tale

“…has a little twist at the end to make the journey all so satisfying.” - Alan Ng, Film Threat

The fable of The Scorpion and the Frog has appeared in countless television shows and movies, and quite often during a recent Presidential election. It’s the idea that, like animals, people can’t change their nature…no matter how much we think we can. Well, not only does the Scorpion make a ni...

"Go see Map of Salvation if you want a historical and academic account of the Armenian Genocide and the women who were there to witness it and save lives". -Film Threat

As a memorial to the 100th anniversary of Armenian Genocide, the film Map of Salvation, director Aram Shahbazyan tells the story of five women, who confronted this genocide head on and are virtually the only witnesses to the first of many great atrocities of the early 20th Century. I want to share with you a film I recently watched- Victor Nunez’s 1993 “Ruby in Paradise”. This film follows a young woman, played by the astute Ashley Judd, as she navigates love and her inevitable shortcomings upon finding a fresh start in the Florida Panhandle. Nunez sound writing and direction of this film focuses on the inner life of the titular Ruby, and makes an honest observation of human behavior when facing the pressures of life. This film stays true to the small moments in life, and fondly reminds us that it is okay to make mistakes and change our dreams along the way. Ruby’s story feels comfortingly familiar to our own lives, making this coming-of-age story timeless 28 years later. I recommend this film to filmmakers and cinephiles alike as a brilliant example of using personal experiences to heighten a human connection with one’s audience. For a better look at the film, it has just been re-released on most VOD platforms, including Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu!
Thank you, judges, at the Irvine International Film Festival for selecting Picnik as best feature screenplay. I am so glad you appreciate the work but most of all, I am thankful the victims found their way into your hearts. Thank you again. Lee
I absolutely love to see the encouragement for everyone to express themselves in their own way! This page reminded me of a recent film I came across called Ruby In Paradise! This film follows the story of Ruby, played by talented actress Ashley Judd who travels to a tourist trap to begin her new life. Writer/Director Victor Nunez does not hold back when expressing his filmmaking technique. He incorporates various elements of natural lighting, grainy camera style, and an elaborate setting to tell a unique story! I enjoyed seeing how Ruby uses the environment to her advantage, finding solutions to her problems and maturing as a young adult throughout the whole film! I highly recommend watching this film on ITunes!

This looks like such a cool event! I love finding out about new festivals. I've had a lot of luck finding great indie films this year. I think my favorite had to be the sci-fi thriller Empathy, Inc. which was raved about in articles by Film Threat and Variety. I was really happy to see that Film Threat was considering it one of the best indie releases of the year! I'm glad I had the opportunity to watch it, and I recommend adding it to your watch list now that it is out on vod.
I just heard that the Edwards Westpark 8 theater is playing "Saint Judy." This film portrays a lawyer, Judith Wood, who single-handedly fights for a change in immigration laws in the United States. She stands up against the United States Court of Appeals to fight for what she believes in. "Saint Judy" is an emotional and powerful piece. Michelle Monaghan gives an outstanding performance. I highly recommend anyone in the Irvine area to go see this film!
Wanted to share that I saw the new biopic Saint Judy is premiering at the Edwards Westpark 8 theater this weekend! It tackles some important topics today like immigration and human rights issues in an amazing way, with an overall inspiring and uplifting message. The amazing cast features Michelle Monaghan, Common, Alfred Molina, and Alfre Woodard, among many others. Looks extremely promising for anyone looking for a new film to watch!
