Lebanon City Schools Band Program

Lebanon City Schools Band Program Your success starts RIGHT HERE!
Our band program can be summed up in a single phrase: “Be the Best You Can Be” This happens whenever you are part of live music taking place. It can include, but not be limited to : 1. A practice room 2. The band room 3. A football field 4. A gymnasium 5. An auditorium 6. A parade, etc... Please note that our expectations do not include beating other bands, taking home first place, or being the best in the area. Those are areas that you cannot control. Live for the enjoyment of performing, the thrill of the artistic moment, and the exhilaration of the human spirit through music and movement. Remember: DO YOUR BEST AND DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE REST

Parents and Students,

I apologize for the late change of plans, but due to the condition of our raincoats students should bring their own rain gear for the game this evening.

Only seniors will wear uniforms (no hats or plumes) for their pregame introductions. All other students will wear athletic shoes, pants/shorts that are appropriate, show shirt, and their own rain gear. Seniors will need to go change after pregame. If senior uniforms get wet we need to make sure they are hung to dry tonight at LHS.

Parents and Fans of the Band,

Below is a message from Heather Wheeler regarding our marching band contest. However, we have a larger issue with getting adequate help across the board. Please help in any way you can.

———

We are 8 short days away from our invitational. This is an all hands on deck event and we have less than 20% of the spots filled to feed the other schools. If you are volunteering, please take a look and sign up for food that you can drop off when you come to volunteer.

We desperately need help getting the food set up to feed drivers, teachers, techs and volunteers.

Very cool article by our esteemed alum, Rachel Spencer!

A note from our Education and Outreach Coordinator Rachel Spencer.

As music educators, we are responsible for creating equal representation in all of our performing ensembles. Every student deserves the opportunity to play jazz, yet so many band directors are confused as to why they often have only one or two girls in their band.

In honor of National Education in the Arts Week, here are a few tips for music educators and band leaders to allow for more female representation in their jazz programs:

1. Encourage girls from a young age to play jazz and improvise. Allow them the same opportunities and pressure as your rising star boys and they will flourish to high school and beyond (looking at you, middle school directors!)

2. Expose them to women in jazz. When I give my students a listening list of great players on their instrument, I make sure to include half men and half women. When young students see someone who looks like them doing something amazing, they are more likely to picture themselves doing something amazing in the future.

3. Don’t go easy on them. Hold them to the same standards for playing as the young men in your group. Give them positive pressure and honest feedback.

4. Make them improvise and frequently play alone. Starting in beginning band, all students need to get used to playing by themselves. The more often your band plays by themselves, the less of a big deal it is. This strategy eases transition to improvisation based music for students of all genders.

5. When teaching improvisation, emphasize expression and melody first, notes second. This takes away the fear factor of “playing a wrong note” and is true for all improvisers, not just young women. If your female students feel that your ensemble is a place for them to learn and express, they are more likely to join and stay in jazz band.

6. Bring in live musicians for clinics, and make sure at least half of them are women. Be sure that every instrument is represented, not just voice.

7. Control the culture of your band. Never tolerate bullying or sexist remarks of any sort from the boys in the band. Many girls shy away from playing jazz because their group becomes a “boys club”. It is your responsibility to educate your male students and cultivate a culture of mutual respect and inclusion.

8. Recruit talented girls from your concert band into jazz band. Coined with the term “Confidence Gap”, many studies have shown that men tend to overestimate their ability and performance, while women underestimate both. Your female students may thrive in jazz band, they just might not join without encouragement.

9. Be joyful in your music making. Jazz is fun, and the more fun you have teaching it the more your students will want to play it.

Parents and Students,

As some of you may have heard by this point because I didn't want to keep it a secret we were accepted into the BOA Indy Super Regional earlier this week. However, we were slotted to perform at 8am on Friday meaning we would have been required to enter the lot at 6am and leave Lebanon around 4am. Obviously this would not have been a great experience for our students. In speaking with the representative that I know at Music for All they offered me the opportunity to attend Grand Nationals for no extra cost and to choose the day and time I wanted to perform. Before making a decision I discussed it with key staff members, presented it to those in attendance at the LBPA meeting last evening, and discussed it with administration and there was a resounding response in favor of Grand Nationals.

I'm sure you are wondering what this all means for us so here are the important highlights until all info is confirmed from BOA/Music for All.

- Our season will now extend through Friday, November 15th. This is our nearly finalized performance day.
- All info will be sent out as soon as Music for All confirms it.

- On October 26 we will rehearse from 8am until Noon ast LHS. There will be no contest.

- We will rehearse at LHS 3-6pm on Monday 11/11, Tuesday 11/12, and Thursday 11/14.

- Everything else about the schedule at the end of the season is correct for now. Remember the rehearsals leading up to MSBA Championships are everyday and the time/location is TBD due to football and other sports using the stadium.

- Students will return home after prelims awards, but if your family would like to get a hotel and stick around for semifinals or finals on Saturday you will be permitted to sign your student out in person with a director or chaperone. Calls/texts will not be accepted to sign a student out.

Lebanon Band Invitational 2019

Here we are.. the 2019 Lebanon Band Invitational, Saturday 28-September. The biggest fund raiser of the year for our Band/Color Guard programs.

This fundraiser benefits all bands in the Lebanon City School District, not just Marching Band or classrooms.. ALL of them.

This is an “all hands on deck” event and without you we cannot do it.

Please take a look at the link and sign up and help where you can. We have the most popular hospitality room in the circuit and we need your help to not disappoint.

You will see we are doing things a little different this year to keep food fresh.

If you sign up, this is a commitment. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Students,

If you are performing tomorrow please wear something Lebanon. It does not have to be the band polo, but if you would like to wear it that is fine. Khaki shorts would be preferred. I apologize for missing that in my email. We will be performing music from our standard list of short stand tunes.
