Art Scholl Showmanship Award, David Martin

David Martin was named the recipient of the 2019 Art Scholl Showmanship Award at a ceremony during the ICAS Convention in Las Vegas last week. Martin joins a Who's Who of air show performers who have received perhaps the air show community's most prestigious award during the last 30+ years, including Leo Loudenslager, Jimmy Franklin, Bob Hoover, Gene Soucy and Sean Tucker.

USMC Announces Harrier, Osprey Schedules for 2020

For 2020, the USMC AV-8B Harrier demo team has confirmed its participation in the Selfridge Open House & Air Show at Selfridge ANGB in Michigan on June 6 and 7. The Marines have also identified Wings over Dalton (May 9-10 in Dalton, Georgia) and the Atlanta Air Show (May 16-17 in Peachtree City, Georgia) as alternate locations for the Harrier demo in 2020. The USMC MV-22 Osprey will appear at four shows in 2020: Heart of Texas Airshow in Waco, Texas on April 4; Thunder over Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky on April 18; the Great State of Maine Air Show in Brunswick, Maine on August 15-16; and the Oregon International Air Show in McMinnville, Oregon on September 25 and 27. The Milwaukee Air & Water Show on July 25-26, the Wings Over Houston Airshow on October 10-11 and the Florida International Air Show on October 23-25 are all alternate locations for an Osprey demo in 2020.

HAPPY NEW YEAR / LOOKING FORWARD The U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning II Demonstration Team is preparing for their first-ever air show season. Stationed at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., the team is scheduled to perform their never before seen aerial profile at 13 events in the U.S. and 1 in Canada, CFB Bagotville. “The past year’s demonstration was sort of like an ‘appetizer’ if you will,” said Capt. Andrew “Dojo” Olson, F-35 Demonstration Team pilot and commander. "The new profile this year will be the full ‘five-course meal’ showing fans everything this jet is capable of.” According to Olson, the new 13 minute-long profile will highlight the F-35A Lightning II’s numerous capabilities to include speed, agility, and high-g turning. “What makes the fifth generation fighter so special in general is the slow-speed, high angle of attack maneuvering it can do,” Olson added. “We’re also going to be performing controlled flat spins while falling out of the sky as well as high-speed passes and vertical climbs.” Along with the new single-jet profile, the team plans to include the Heritage Flight display following the F-35A’s performance flying alongside older warbirds representing the past, present, and future of Air Force Airpower. “For the 2019 air show season, we’re going to be a demonstration team,” Olson said. “The show we’re going to bring to fans is unlike anything they’ve ever seen and I really believe it’s going to set a bench mark for the demonstrations performed by any airplane on the planet. I think it’s really going to impress people by finally showing off the full maneuvering envelope of the F-35A.” Throughout the off season, Olson is preparing for the new profile in Fort Worth, Texas where he’ll engage in simulated training. “The training involved during the off season is very intense,” Olson said. “It takes a lot of practice to fly the F-35A crisply and professionally to fully showcase its power and agility. Walt Pierce Inducted into Air Show Hall of Fame

Barnstormer Walt Pierce was the second 2018 inductee to the ICAS Foundation's Air Show Hall of Fame at this year's ICAS Convention. For nearly half a century, Pierce was a well-respected wing walking pilot who performed all over the U.S. and Canada in the same Stearman biplane. During the award presentation, he was recognized for his skills as an aviator and his professionalism during a career that began in the 1960s. Gardner is Recipient of 2018 Bob Hoover Wingman Award

In recognition of her work as the Federal Aviation Administration's national aviation events specialist and principal policy liaison with the U.S. air show community, Sue Gardner was presented with the Bob Hoover Wingman Award during the annual Chairman’s Banquet. Gardner was cited for the effort and commitment she has made to establish a partnership between the FAA and the air show community that has focused on improving air show safety without imposing undue regulatory burden on industry. Specifically, the award presentation remarks noted her efforts to return air show aircraft to the air following the terrorist attacks of September, 2001; her contribution to efforts to harmonize U.S. and Canadian air show policy; her commitment to institutionalizing the prohibition on aerobatic energy directed at the crowd; the major role she played in two major rewrites of FAA air show policy; and the collaborative approach she has brought to her position as national aviation events specialist. Past recipients of the Bob Hoover Wingman Award include Ross Perot, Jr., Rudy Malnati, Mike Houghton, and the U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation. #ICAS18

MacDill Named 2018 Schram Award Recipient

For the work that it did to combine a regional Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Fair with its annual open house to create a powerhouse public affairs event, MacDill Air Force Base and its Tampa Bay Airfest and STEAM Fair were named the 2018 recipient of the Dick Scram Memorial Community Relations Award. MacDill displayed 50 different STEAM exhibitors for 1,300 students from 29 different schools on the Friday before their weekend show. And less than half the overall air show is now funded using government appropriated funds, due to a unique and successful partnership with local businesses. Schram, a former Blue Angel, was an engaged member of the air show community before passing away unexpectedly in 1987. The award named in his honor has now been presented to 30 different military facilities to recognize and showcase the work that they have done in using their air shows and open houses to strengthen relationships in the communities where the bases are located.

Darnell Family Receives 2018 Art Scholl Memorial Showmanship Award

Neal, Chris, Marilyn and Brooke Darnell were named recipients of the Art Scholl Memorial Showmanship Award during the ICAS Convention for their work building and operating the Shockwave Jet Truck & Flash Fire Jet Trucks stable of jet-powered vehicles. The Darnells are lauded for the multi-dimensional entertainment experience they bring to air shows, as well as their consistency, reliability and professionalism. The award is presented each year to the performer who best exemplifies the qualities of showmanship demonstrated by Art Scholl during his air show career. Past recipients of the award include Bob Hoover, Jimmy Franklin, the French Connection, Sean D. Tucker, Tora Tora Tora and the Red Baron Pizza Squadron. #ICAS18
