A huge thank you to race rider Cathi Grove, who generously made up individualized gift bags for each rider/horse! It was such a thoughtful and appreciated gesture, and was a true demonstration of the kind of classy, competitive, gutsy rider that the race was designed to showcase. Thanks again Cathi!

**BREAKING NEWS**
Sunday’s Side Saddle Race has been split! The first group of lady riders will run at 12:00 noon. This will be the jumping group. The second group will be the racers who will run on the flat. They will begin at 12:30 PM.

Awards will be presented first to the jumping group, then to the flat racers. The silver perpetual tray to the 1st place rider will reflect both race winners, on the flat and over the fence. Our presenters will now have the opportunity to present their awards twice, giving them additional exposure at this high-profile event!

We realize that this is a somewhat last minute change, however this is being done with the safety of our riders and horses in mind. Races are routinely split with 10 or more riders, and we have 14 entered.

So get ready to experience twice the sideways excitement on Sunday!

We have been very fortunate to have the volunteer support of legends in the world of steeplechase racing and side saddle as we have been organizing this race. Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Fishback will lead the ladies on their course walk this Saturday. Attached is a brief biography and some amazing shots of Jerry during his racing years. Also, Denise Lee Hamilton, of Aiken, SC, will judge the best turned out award. She has a long history of riding, showing, and hunting side saddle. Her biography is also attached.

Devon and Maggie would like to thank everyone that came out to the wine tasting event in support of the race at Greenhill Winery yesterday. It was a fantastic event, with superb Greenhill wine and tasty appetizers from Salamander, and huge support from the local racing and hunting community. Many, many thanks go out to Kelly Jordan Sweeny for the monumental task of organizing the door prizes, and to all of the interested race riders and businesses that donated items.

Unfortunately, we have to announce a change of date for the assessment ride/training day due to the extreme winter weather we have been experiencing the past month, which has resulted in changes to the Virginia point-to-point racing calendar, and therefore a conflict with our previously scheduled Sunday, March 22nd date.

The assessment ride/training day is NOW scheduled for Saturday, March 28th, still at Sunnybank Farm, time TBA. I believe we have heard from most of you, but if you have a conflict for that date please let us know IMMEDIATELY; an alternate assessment may be possible while out hunting on 3/22/15 with either Snickersville Hounds or Loudoun Fairfax Hunt. Again, you need to contact Devon ([email protected]) and Maggie ([email protected]) ASAP to discuss that.

We need to have proof of valid and current health insurance coverage for you (for both the assessment ride and the race itself) and a current negative Coggins report for your horse. Additionally, if you are going to be assessed while hunting, by law you will need a Virginia small game hunting license.

02/23/2015

To prepare for the March 22nd side saddle assessment ride at Sunnybank Farm in Middleburg and the race at Oatlands in April, we need to collect the following:
1. Proof of health insurance for each rider with coverage dates valid thru the day of the race.
2. A negative Coggins report for the horse who will be ridden on March 22nd and raced on April 12th.

You may email the info via PDF to [email protected] or mail your information to: Maggie Johnston, P.O. Box 1793, Middleburg VA 20118

Please send your information ON OR BEFORE Monday, March 16th. If you have any questions or concerns please be in touch immediately.

01/29/2015

Please make sure you RSVP for the wine tasting as soon as possible, as capacity is limited to 100 people, and we of course want to make sure that our riders get to attend!

01/29/2015

As we continue to prepare for April’s race at Oatlands on Sunday the 12th at 12:00 noon, we now need to collect rider and horse information. This will be used to create the entry invitations after the March 22nd training session, and to be used in the race program.

Please answer the following questions and forward your information to Maggie ([email protected]) no later than Monday, March 2, 2015:

Horse Owner: (Owner’s name)
Trainer: (if Owner state “Owner”)
Rider: (state your name)
Horse’s name:
Horse’s: color/sex/age/breed & lineage, if known (ex: bay/G/12/TB (Holy Bull-Secretariat)

Should you have any questions please be in touch ~

Here is the flyer for the March 8th wine tasting event at Greenhill Winery, with food provided by Salamander Resort, as well as a list of just *some* of the great door prizes that will be available! Please RSVP, thank you!

Info on the event and race:
"To celebrate the inaugural Esther Everhart Memorial Invitational side saddle race this spring, race sponsors Greenhill Winery & Vineyard and Salamander Resort have planned a wine tasting event on Sunday, March 8th from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at Greenhill’s private Club House. With their $20 ticket, steeplechase fans will experience an afternoon of pre-race fun and mingle with riders, trainers and foxhunters; taste a selection of Greenhill wines from a personal Greenhill Winery & Vineyard glass; enjoy appetizers from Salamander Resort’s highly reviewed kitchens; plus be entered to win one of several door prizes, including an overnight stay and trail ride at the Marriott Ranch in Hume, a Clyde’s gift certificate, braiding and clipping services, and many more.

On Sunday April 12, 2015 the 49th annual Loudoun Point-to-Point will be held at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Virginia. The first race of the day (12:00 pm) is the Esther Everhart Memorial Invitational side saddle race. Side saddle racing in America was last seen in the early 1940s, and Donna Rogers, Joint Master of the Loudoun Fairfax Hunt, is thrilled to have “a return to traditional riding in Virginia” with the advent of the side saddle race at Loudoun. Leading Virginia race trainer, and joint Master of the Snickersville Hounds, Eva Smithwick will hold a pre-race training session with famed timber jockey Garet “Woods” Winants at her Sunnybank Farm (Middleburg, VA) in late March for all interested side saddle race riders. Eva and Donna believe this race will bring a new level excitement to steeplechase racing in Virginia and hope this style of racing catches on and brings additional side saddle opportunities to the steeplechase race circuit. Race organizers Devon Zebrovious and Maggie Johnston hope that the interest generated by the hit show Downton Abbey, which has shown ladies hunting aside in past seasons and recently featured women racing aside, and social media interest in their trips to Ireland for side saddle hunts, will cause riders of every age to consider riding side saddle.

Side saddle racers at the Loudoun race in April will compete on the right rein over a course approximately one mile in length, with one optional fence close to the finish line. They will be attired in traditional formal or informal hunting attire. The Bradley Gable family will award a perpetual silver trophy to the winner of the race. Race sponsor Greenhill Winery & Vineyard will present the Best Turned-Out Rider & Horse award as well as ribbons to those placing first – sixth.

Those interested in learning more about this race should contact race organizers Maggie Johnston ([email protected]) or Devon Zebrovious ([email protected])."
