It is our honor to welcome back Dahlena Genova to the DGLA Zoom room as a part of our 12 Days of Bellydance workshop series! Dahlena will be teaching "Beledi Taxim" on Sunday, December 27 at 10am PST or on demand until January 17.

Deep Undulations and curvaceous hips - that is how you spell a Beladi Taxim. Whether with or without rhythm, the Beladi Taxim is a precious moment during a dancer’s show where musicians and dancer improvise together, it is both a spontaneous and deeply connected moment of art and performance. Dahlena will guide you through this topic with a focus on music phasing and context - take a deep breath and go with the musical flow in this workshop.

We love dancing with her every week, and love even more when she gives us a special workshop. Join DGLA Legendary Teacher Kamala Almanzar for a super fun "The Golden Age of the Mejance 1980s Nightclub Style" workshop on Saturday, Dec 26 from 10am-12pm or on-demand until January 17!

In the early 1980s Arabic nightclubs proliferated from Cairo to Europe & across the USA. The emergence of what we now call Mejance was amplified by some of the most beautiful music ever written for Oriental Dance, designed for the dancer to take the stage in dramatic fashion. Kamala will dig deep into her personal journey to present the dance style specifically performed in Arabic ‘80s nightclubs for this iconic Egyptian musical genre. Hips were the focus and subtle movement was favored. A great addition to broaden your dance education! This is an improvisation class. Bring a veil, preferably chiffon, for era accuracy!

We can't wait to welcome Bellyqueen co-founder and Bellydance Superstars alumni Kaeshi Chai to the DGLA Zoom room as a part of our 12 Days of Bellydance workshop series. Kaeshi will be teaching one of her many specialties: "Bellydance Fans" on Thursday, Dec 24 at 10am or on-demand until January 17. This workshop will be a lot of fun!

Fascinated by fans but don’t know how to use them? Then come and discover how the beauty of fan dancing can enhance your ability to mesmerize an audience. Kaeshi learned fan dance first hand from Chinese dance masters as a teenager, and toured throughout multiple cities in Australia dancing with the “Chinese Youth League”. Learn different hand holds, poses, dramatic accents, poses you can strike, plus a myriad of bellydance movements that work well with fan technique. Appropriate for 12 inch fans with 5-12 inches of fabric hanging off the edge. Please bring your own fans to the workshop. If you don't have any, extra fans will be available for use.

Pixie Fordtears performs Tribal Fusion Bellydance in FISSION

#WomanCrushWednesday we are heading into fusion land for Pixie Fordtears (@pixiefordtears) from the Bay Area in California! We can’t get enough of the storytelling Pixie puts into her dance, plus those effortless-looking layers have us 😍 Starting her career at the Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Fair, Pixie has danced as a solo artist as well as with Jill Parker and Zoe Jakes, and is a touring member of both the Bhoomi Project and Beats Antique. Pixie’s latest projects filmed in her home have been inspiring us all to get our set design skills up to par - we could frankly live in the “Dirty South” video. Pixie is slated to be a featured instructor at Cairo ShimmyQuake 2021 and is currently teaching pop-up workshops online. Check her IG page for more info!

Badia Masabni y su Casino Badia

For #WomanCrushWednesday we’d love to bring you a slice of bellydance history: Badia Masabni, 1892-1974 was an entertainer, singer, actress, and businesswoman perhaps known for operating a series of influential nightclubs in Cairo during the 1920s and 30s. She operated three nightclubs in Cairo, one in Giza City, and yet another in Alexandria. Cairo's Casino Opera is where many of raqs sharqi’s most famous Golden Age names got their start, including Samia Gamal and Taheyya Kariokka, and because of this Badia Masabni is often considered the “matron of modern bellydance.” Not only was the Casino Opera a wildly successful nightclub, but boasted a dance school where Badia not only trained dancers herself, but employed dance instructors and choreographers such as Isaac Dickson and Khristo Klaadax. Due to several competing factors, Badia sold the Casino Opera in 1950 and after a period of intense turmoil selling the rest of her businesses moved to Lebanon to retire to a dairy farm. We’re grateful to have Badia Masabni’s legacy of woman-owned and -run businesses as part of our dance form!
