The CSUN piano department would like to acknowledge and congratulate our talented piano students with their achievements during the spring semester, 2021:

Our sophomore student Dutch Dodge received the
Gold Prize in the Romantic Style Music Festival, held in March, sponsored by the Boston-based online music organization, Musicale
(https://www.wearemusicale.com/). This prize was a result of Dutch’s masterful and mature performance of the grand B Minor Sonata by Franz Liszt. He also received an Honorable Mention at the 16th Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, held online in April for this performance:

In February, the junior student from Malaysia Yongxin Melissa Ooi, received the Silver Prize at the Bach and Baroque Music Festival, sponsored by the Musicale and also participated in their Romantic Style Music Festival.

Melissa received Synne Hansen Miller Piano Scholarship. At the 2021 CSUN Honors Convocation Ceremony, Melissa was named the Music Department Outstanding Junior Student. On May 15,th she presented her CSUN Junior Recital. This recital may be viewed here:

A senior student Michael Marquez is gearing toward performing his senior recital in the fall, which will feature some popular works, such as Beethoven’s Appassionata Sonata, as well as lesser-heard rarities, such as Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s “Union, Paraphrase de Concert on the National Airs, Star-spangled Banner, Yeankee Doodle & Hail Columbia”.
Michael worked on the latter work at the CSUN Guest Artist Masterclass with Dr. Jose Raul Lopez of the Florida International University in March and later successfully participated in the Romantic Style Music Festival at the Musicale, receiving an Honorable Mention for his colorful performance of this work:

Graduating senior, Sophia Cho, is the recipient of several awards from the music department. A piano pedagogy major, Sophia also completed all the music education requirements. She was named the Outstanding Music Education student and was awarded the Richard Wiegand ’66 Scholarship. In keyboard, Sophia received the Joan Thompson Scholarship and was named Outstanding Senior in the music department. She will be continuing her studies at CSUN in the fall, working towards a Single Subject Teaching Credential in music.

Garrett Tan-Torres is slated to graduate with a BM in Piano Performance, completing it all in three-yeas and graduating Summa Cum Laude! He received the Joan Thompson Scholarship and is now preparing his Senior Recital to be presented this summer.


Our first-year graduate student from Chengdu, China, Zhanglin Hu received the Bronze Prizes at the Bach and Baroque Music Festival as well as the Romantic Style Music Festival, sponsored by the Musicale. Zhanglin was also a prizewinner at the 2021 Chopin Avenue Piano Competition Online for Chopin Sonata for his performance of the Sonata in B-Flat Minor, Op. 35. Zhanglin has successfully completed his first year of the MM degree studies at CSUN as a recipient of the Synne Hansen Miller Piano Scholarship.

SunJun Hwang, returning to CSUN this past academic year to complete his master’s degree in Piano Performance after interrupting his studies after his initial year in order to fulfill his service duty in the South Korean Army, has recently performed his graduate solo recital. The recital took place on April 30, 2021 at the Korean Church 주안에교회in Northridge.

We want to congratulate our recent master’s degree graduates Shara Sun and Nasim Moattar with their acceptances to the doctoral program at the University of Oklahoma at Nomran in the studio of Dr. Jeongwon Ham. Congratulations to both of them!
