If You Build It, They Will Bike: Pop-Up Lanes Increased Cycling During Pandemic

STUDY: Adding bike lanes to urban streets can increase the number of cyclists across an entire city, not just on the streets with new bike lanes.

In our experience, the more people find opportunities to walk, bike, or skate to their destination, the more they want to keep doing it.

A study of European cities adds to a growing body of evidence that investments in cycling infrastructure can encourage bike commuting, which helps cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Cycling is ten times more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities

Transportation is one of the most challenging sectors to decarbonize; one way to reduce emissions relatively quickly, and potentially globally, is to expand opportunities for cycling, skating, and walking. Active travel has a big role to play in making cities greener:

Active travel can help tackle the climate crisis earlier than electric vehicles – even if you swap the car for a bike for just one trip a day.

Transit patterns and street use transformed over the past year - Santa Monica Daily Press

Santa Monica made their streets public spaces over the last year, expanding how they're utilized and making them safer in the process.

“22% of Santa Monica’s land area is streets and these are public spaces,” said City Chief Mobility Officer, Francie Stefan. “I think that we’ve seen a really interesting cultural shift in people using the streets more, to be safe and maintain social distancing, but still have limited social contact and other kinds of activities they need for their livelihood.”

Culver City Council approves 1.3 miles of bus and bike lanes

The Culver City Council approved the addition of dedicated mobility lanes (for cyclists, scooter riders, emergency vehicles, and buses) to a 1.3-mile corridor between Duquesne and La Cienega Avenues. It's a "quick-build" project that requires little physical infrastructure to implement, and it'll be paired with an investment in improved transit service. When people see that streets can serve *everyone*, they take steps to realize it:

In a unanimous vote taken on February 1, the Culver City Council approved the addition of dedicated mobility lanes to a 1.3-mile corridor between Duquesne and La Cienega Avenues. Our Story

CicLAvia is a free and recurring event that allows for the temporary closing of interconnected routes throughout the LA region, creating a web of public space in which Angelenos can walk, bike, exercise, socialize, celebrate, and explore new cultures and neighborhoods.

Similar events occur in many other cities around the US like Portland, New York, and San Francisco. The Bogóta ciclovía also has inspired programs in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Quito, and Melbourne.
