Going on 10 Years, L.A.’ s CicLAvia is a Pedestrian Paradise

“I was born and raised in Los Angeles, grew up in South LA and had been all over the city, so I was very familiar with the streets we were riding on that day. But my experience riding at CicLAvia was just a whole different way to see the city.” How we're continuing to reimagine this city and its open spaces:

Ten years after its founding and eight months into a pandemic, L.A’s bike-centric nonprofit reimagines public health in an urban landscape.

Best Practices: How Seville Became a City of Cyclists

"The secret to our success was treating cycling like a system of transportation — building an entire network of connected lanes, instead of a few disconnected lanes year after year."

San José's bold new plan for climate-friendly transit | Greenbiz

San Jose is aiming to create a city where anyone can comfortably bike to any neighborhood. Their planned network includes 350-plus miles of protected bike lanes, 100 miles of bike boulevards and 100 miles of off-street trails. Already, the city has built over 390 miles total.

For too long, bike lanes were made for the the few people prepared to brave speeding cars, with no physical barriers to block them from traffic.

Our Story

CicLAvia is a free and recurring event that allows for the temporary closing of interconnected routes throughout the LA region, creating a web of public space in which Angelenos can walk, bike, exercise, socialize, celebrate, and explore new cultures and neighborhoods.

Similar events occur in many other cities around the US like Portland, New York, and San Francisco. The Bogóta ciclovía also has inspired programs in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Quito, and Melbourne.
