Dear Nisei Week supporters,

The Nisei Week Foundation is closely monitoring the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) situation as it evolves locally and globally. Our concern is for the health and safety of those who attend, volunteer and participate in our community festival, and will be at the heart of any decision we make. In the weeks to come, we will determine if the 80th Nisei Week Japanese Festival will take place as currently scheduled August 15-23, 2020, or if there will be an alternative plan or adjustments to communicate. Thank you for your continued support and interest in the Nisei Week Japanese Festival.

Today’s word of the day is “ねずみ (nezumi),” which means “mouse/rat.” Nezumi can be written as “鼠” in kanji characters or as “子” when referring to the zodiac sign, as in “来年は子年です (Next year is the year of the rat).” 🐭

There are many different types of fireworks (花火, hanabi) in Japan including some that kids can enjoy. One such hanabi for kids is called the “nezumi” which runs fast and spins round and round on the ground. Another is the “hebi” which slithers like a snake while it's burning. November 11 is origami day. The number "1" is regarded as one side of a square, and four "1" s of November 11 (1111) represent each side of a square origami.

Origami is a Japanese pastime of making animals, flowers, and many other things simply by folding paper. This activity requires you to think carefully and work nimbly with your fingers as you concentrate on precise actions, focusing on the part of the paper to fold in order to make the final product that you desire. As such, origami is said to have an effect of training people's brains. In the present day, more and more people across the world enjoy the traditional Japanese amusement of origami.

It's also persimmon season in California. Seeds for non-native persimmons first reached the United States in 1856 when they were sent from Japan by Commodore Perry. Grafted trees were imported in 1870 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and distributed to California and the southern states.

In 1927, the Santa Ana Register reported persimmons were "practically a new crop" and that the first persimmon packing plant had opened in Tustin (Tustin Lemon Association). Persimmon growers in Orange County were shipping 400 boxes a day of persimmons to the Los Angeles markets, and train cars full of persimmons to Chicago and New York markets.

By 1930, California had over 98,000 bearing trees on 3,000 acres. Real estate development reduced persimmon groves to 540 acres by 1968 (Purdue University; Morton, J. 1987. Japanese Persimmon)
