Mary Nichols on Accelerating California's Electric Vehicle Market | VerdeXchange

As the federal administration debates ending electric vehicle subsidies, California is putting the pedal to the metal to increase adoption of zero-emission cars. At a recent Veloz forum sponsored by Southern California Edison (SCE), Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, and BMW, California Air Resources Board - ARB Chair Mary Nichols provided an overview of the state’s unprecedented progress on electric cars over the past decade. Nichols reported that almost one out of every ten cars sold in 2018’s third quarter was electric. Projecting rapid acceleration of new, more affordable electric models, Nichols is on Veloz’s public policy advisory board, supporting California’s drive toward zero-emissions. Veloz has launched the #ElectricForAll public awareness campaign to highlight the benefits of going electric to consumers. Nichols also spoke about the need to reduce barriers for integrating electric cars and the built environment, help cities increase adoption, as well as harness the creativity of automakers in getting to the goal of a zero emission future.

Opinion: Water conservation bills offer map to California water security

Two bills moving through the CA state legislature – AB 1668 and SB 606 – offer a roadmap to a reliable, affordable water future for California. These bills will establish efficiency targets for local water agencies that take into account each region’s population, land use, climate, and other factors that impact water needs. This will help drive the adoption of water-smart technologies, from low-flow toilets to faucet aerators and leak detectors that save water, energy and money while increasing our shared water security.

Shell Grappled with Climate Change 20 Years Ago, Documents Show

Hindsight??? Two decades ago, a group of researchers associated with Shell envisioned a violent storm ripping through the East Coast with such force that it would transform young people into climate activists, spark lawsuits and cause government leaders to turn on fossil fuel companies.

They were only off by two years. Superstorm Sandy, which devastated the East Coast in 2012, killed at least 147 people and cause more than $70 billion in economic damages.

Company scientists foresaw a storm like Sandy, as well as climate lawsuits

It was an honor to speak at the 2018 VerdeXchange. The resource revolution isn't just coming, its already started — not long ago the 9 biggest companies in the world were oil and car companies and now we're seeing nations like Norway ban oil and diesel vehicles as early as 2025.

#TBT to an amazing discussion with VerdeXchange on park access, green space, and how to build more nature into our cities and into our lives.

Los Angeles has a history of being park poor - a reality I've known since I was a kid growing up in the East Hollywood area. But together, through park expansion and ideas like joint-use with LAUSD, we can build a greener City for our children.

Thanks for having me. I can't wait to join the panel next year to discuss the progress we're making.
