In the middle of February the greatest college program in the history of college baseball begins its 2020 season under a new head coach, Jason Gill. I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Gill at the Alumni Banquet on October 20th (Mickey Mantle's birthday, FYI). He's a very personable individual and I respect his desire to lead this program back to national prominence. All of us who love USC baseball, wish him a healthy year, filled with pitching gems and walk off dinggers. Let's support these young men who have decided to compete at the highest level of college baseball.
I hope to see you all there, cheering till your voice needs a comeback!! From center field at USC
Last week we said goodbye to a great friend of mine and an amazing Trojan, the former USC pitching great Vic Lapiner. In my life I have made many friends that I consider life long special individuals. I hope we all have had that in our lives.
Vic loved USC especially the baseball program. He never tired telling me of his love for Coach Dedeaux and his teammates. Only his family and his loving wife Renee were more important than seeing the Trojans have a great year.
He asked me to coach with him in the American Legion baseball program. We coached his sons Jeff and Craig. Our biggest fan was Vic's daughter Traci, who is amazing in her own life. I loved coaching with The Bear! He was the kind of coach you had to admire. His knowledge of pitching was encyclopedic. The way he treated his young players was amazing. He always said you should love your teammates!
We took teams that didn't win in the high school year and went to the playoffs each year. He would take pitchers that didn't know how to perform on the mound and gave them a hero's education on how to compete. Winning is the result...playing well is the reality. Teaching the game was Vic's finest ability.
I'll miss his deep confident voice, i'll think of him every time i see a pitcher compete and i'll remember that I never left a conversation or a meeting with Vic Lapiner, that I wasn't better off. He made FIGHT ON a belief in all of us!! From center field at USC
In the exciting world of college baseball Trojan players are special. They wear the greatest uniform in the history of this sport. The rode to USC is a difficult one. A young man has to display outstanding character, maintain excellent grades through out his educational career and show that he can compete at the highest level in college.
As for me, I feel very lucky. Each year I see the finest college baseball players in the USA right here at Dedeaux Field!! Then periodically other players from various colleges come to Los Angeles... and get to witness them perform!
To have played at The Greatest College Baseball Program of the 20th Century will always be my highest honor. A Daily Trojan reporter once asked me my most memorable moment as a Trojan. Without hesitation...every time I put on that uniform was a greater moment.
I salute the parents of all the players that come here. They set the standards, supported their child's athletic dreams, made it possible to navigate the pressures of being young and in most cases foot the bill. So Mom and Dad pat yourselves on the back and know that you've won a great battle in life...having a USC Trojan in your family.
