You're enjoying the trail when you find yourself with front row view of a battle royale.
These two male rattlesnakes are in the middle of a wrestling match vying for the privilege to mate with a nearby female. Whichever snake taps out first has to move along. Watch how each snake tries to body slam the other to the ground.

Thank you to @jeremyrayvaldez for sharing this experience!-
I stopped about two feet short of one of my biggest nightmares today! Too much front brake and almost went over my bars and landed on these guys. 😖 SNAKES... I hate snakes!!! #mountainbiking #specialized #stumpjumper #nightmare #rattlesnakes

They do exist! Vernal Pool Fairy Shrimp

They do exist, they really do!
Thanks to recent rains, seasonal pools of water "activated" egg cysts of Vernal Pool Fairy Shrimp. These tiny threatened crustaceans are less than an inch long, note the remains of drowned bees for size comparison. Fairy shrimp need to hatch, mature, and reproduce all before the rainy season is over and before rising temps evaporate the vernal pool completely. What a life!

We are honored as King Gillette Ranch was selected as the kick off location for the CALIFORNIA HIQUEEN TOUR with @pattiegonia!

The tour introduced new ways for an ally to celebrate LGBTQ+, learn about mother nature (aka mother natch herself), and POC.
This was a wonderful event introducing diverse attendees to #santamonicamountains and all the possibilities it provides! Thank you, and hope to see you again soon!

Lent and the spiritual benefits of nature walks

Still thinking about what to give up during Lent? Consider increasing your time spent in nature! Sitting next to the lake in Franklin Canyon, watching hawks soar over grassy hills at Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve, feeling the sand in your toes while watching the sunset at Lechuza Beach, or explore a new hiking trail, could benefit you in more ways than one!

Each year during Lent we try to imitate Jesus’ time of fasting and prayer by making various sacrifices, denying ourselves our favorite foods and entertainment. However, do we ever imitate Jes…

Who knew a quick downpour of rain could provide such an oasis?!? A depression in a boulder collected enough water for these bees to enjoy! Watch and listen as they quench their thirst, not even phased by the camera. Let's hope they get enough before this weeks heat causes the puddle to evaporate!

Congratulations to our friends at Community Nature Connection, whose Youth Leadership Series will be as featured in the international documentary series "The Life Size City" which features cities around the globe. The theme for Los Angeles? Inclusion. Great job CNC!

Mikael Colville, host of the documentary series The Life-Sized City, travels around the world to meet people with ideas on bettering their cities and communities. CNC's Youth Leadership Series was featured as part of the Los Angeles narrative. Y.L.S. Program Manager Julio Soria and Program Coordinator Annakaren Ramirez along with alumni from our various programs shared their stories, the importance of access and equity in the outdoors, and all the awesome work that we do with the community.

The effort to preserve Hidden Creeks in Unincorporated Chatsworth and Porter Ranch was only possible because of the incredible collaboration of community members who advocated for it to remain as permanent open space. Thank you to Senator Henry Stern, Councilmember John Lee, the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority, the developers, our Native American partners, and every community leader who came to the table on this issue so we can enjoy this space for years to come.

Looky looky what we found!
While at Robin's Nest Park in Acton, Restoration Manager Tony Charness found a female wood rat nesting in an old defunct electrical panel! Knowing how overnight temps can still reach deep freezing, she and her nest were left untouched. We try to be as kind as possible to all of our wildlife, helping her survive through the remaining winter months. Although once summer temps warm up, the native wood rat will have to move along!

TBT- Camping in the city, under the stars!

Campers came out to Vista Hermosa Natural Park last weekend for our first adult-only campout and to experience a night at one of the most romantic spots in Downtown LA. Participants were able to practice skills like knot tying and fire making while also learning about the animals that call the area home.

Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

P-56, a 4 to 5-year-old male mountain lion that was living in the western Santa Monica Mountains south of the 101 Freeway, was recently killed under state depredation law. This marks the first time that a radio-collared mountain lion has been killed under a California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) depredation permit in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Since 1990, mountain lion hunting has been banned in California, and mountain lions are designated by the state as a “specially protected mammal.” However, a mountain lion may still be killed if it harms pets or livestock and the property owner requests a depredation permit from CDFW.

National Park Service biologists were informed that P-56 was killed on January 27. Mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains have been a part of an almost 18-year-long NPS study that looks at how the small population is faring in a highly fragmented region. Although NPS is conducting research on the local mountain lion population, CDFW is responsible for managing the state's wildlife, including mountain lions. Currently, P-63 is the only adult male in the Santa Monica Mountains that biologists are tracking.

P-56 was first caught and outfitted with a GPS tracking collar in April 2017, a few days after young male P-55 was captured in the same spot. They are suspected to be brothers. P-56 was also the suspected father of P-70, P-71, P-72 and P-73, based on time that he spent traveling with adult female P-19.

A generation of kids and adults grew up with Jordan, then another generation that grew up with Kobe. Kobe showed us all the hard work he put in to be great, he made sure his teammates would be great, he was a leader. From the 3 peat dynasty with Shaq, to the back to back reigns with Pau, Kobe wanted it all and he got it. 5 time champion, multiple time all star, all nba, scoring champion and MVP. Who knows what could’ve been had he not torn his Achilles, but Kobe always delivered. The greatest Laker of all time, my all time fav NBA player. You will def be missed a lot Kobe. To ur 13 yr old baby girl GiGi, basically ur twin she’s flying high with you and talking basketball with you forever. Pray for Vanessa, her daughters. RIP KOBE!!!!!

CNRA Speaker Series - Improving Access to California’s Natural and Cultural Treasures

Too many Californians cannot access our state's parks, beaches, & outdoor spaces, nor our state's array of museums & cultural & historical sites. While many of us get outside into nature frequently, millions of Californians never have this opportunity. We need to expand all Californians' access to parks, open space, nature and cultural amenities.
