It may feel like midnight when it's only 6pm but the wildlife seem to be enjoying the extended "me time!"

Many trails close promptly after sunset, allowing wildlife to roam and hunt, free from human, vehicle, or dog interaction. This bobcat was caught on trail camera at Elephant Hill, a popular hiking spot of Eastside LA.

Please respect the wildlife, allow them uninterrupted time and space they need to do their thing while the sun is down.

Remembering Alex Trebek this morning 😥 and forever thankful for his donation of open space land for public use.

Save the date, KING TIDES are returning! November 15-16 & December 13-15 and you can help document this naturally predictable event by taking photos!

Find out more from The California Coast www.coastal.ca.gov/kingtides :
The California King Tides Project helps us visualize future sea level by observing the highest high tides of today.

You can help by taking and sharing photos of the shoreline during King Tides to create a record of changes to our coast and estuaries. Find out what time and how high the King Tides will be near you. Learn how to participate by uploading your photos via a web browser or with a free app. Your photos will be added to a map of King Tides photos. As always, please be cautious and respect the power of the ocean, and don't disturb shorebirds which may be much farther upland than usual.

And you thought LA didn't have changing fall colors!

Poison oak leaves slowly transform from an oily green to shades of red, orange, and yellow before falling off in fall. Beware, the leaves and branches may still easily transfer oils onto your clothes and skin!

We're back out and about on patrol as the Red Flag Warning is in effect until 6pm tonight.

With a much wind as blew yesterday, LA Mountains remain unburned, fortunately! Trees, on the other hand, didn't fare as well. MRCA fire patrols quickly cleared numerous fallen trees from park roads and trails.

Over the river and through the woods to..... find an unauthorized helicopter landing site!

The @habitatauthority in the Whittier/Puente Hills area contracts with MRCA for ranger services. We were alerted to a helicopter landing on a cleared hilltop, which shouldn't be there!

Rangers Hughes and Gomez hiked and crawled through thick brush, a lot of poison oak, and even wore protective snake 🐍 chaps just in case they encountered slithering residents.  Unfortunately, the brush was so thick they could not reach the top. Next steps- scout a different route and/or utilize air support to reach the site, minimizing further resource damage.

To be continued....

Does the chill in the air have you wearing a jacket? If so, recreate this Simon & Garfunkel album cover photographed in Franklin Canyon back in 1966, long before it was a park!

We're proud of the long onsite filming history of the canyon and happy the tradition continues today!

Filming permit fees go directly back to ongoing operation and maintenance of trails, garbage service, bathrooms, and staffing.

Have you been sprayed by a skunk before?

Here's an animal that needs no introduction. As well-known as skunks are by sight, it's probably their notorious predator protection that makes them famous. Skunk spray is an oily liquid produced by glands under its large tail. When threatened, a skunk turns away from the threat and blasts it with a hard-to-remove, horrible-smelling spray, which can travel as far as ten feet. Skunk spray is a marvel of chemistry, made up of seven different major volatile components. If you can look past that one, obvious, negative feature, skunks do us a lot of favors: they eat stinging insects, for example. And they are naturally immune to snake venom, so they eat venomous snakes, too. And then there's the cuteness. The undeniable cuteness. Photo by Michael Schramm, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Size doesn't matter!
The American kestrel is the smallest of the falcons, with length ranging from 9-12 inches but a 21 inch wingspan sure gives it the speed needed to hunt insects, small rabbits, mice, and rats!

You can see them along the trail or just as likely when you're taking a walk around your block!

Thank you to @ryanhuang8528 for the beautiful photos!

Who's howling at the moon tonight?

This weeks Full Moon will be the Harvest Moon!
The Harvest Moon is the Full Moon that rises closest to sunset, and can be seen rising tonight at 6:57 p.m.

This moon is named the Harvest Moon because it kept the sky lit during harvest time, allowing farmers to work later into the day as the sun set, and the moon rose.

Are you worried about your home during wildfire season? Are you looking for tips on how to prepare for wildfires and support our ecosystems? Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is part of a coalition led by the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains including state and local agencies, fire departments, researchers, and nonprofits that collaborated to create defensiblespace.org, a new website compiling best practices for creating fire-wise homes and landscapes.

The initiative provides accessible solutions for homeowners and residents to improve fire resilience and resistance of their home and landscape to wildfire. The project was funded by CAL FIRE as part of the California Climate Investments Program. Read more about the project by visiting defensiblespace.org

Who's been here?

Located at the western gateway to Downtown Los Angeles, 10.5-acre Vista Hermosa Park is an urban natural park developed by the MRCA that boldly returns the serenity and diversity of nature the Los Angeles urban core. Operated in collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District and the City of Los Angeles, Vista Hermosa Natural Park is a popular destination for residents of this densely populated neighborhood.

The park features walking trails, streams, meadows, oak savannahs, picnic grounds, and a nature-themed playground amidst native Mediterranean vegetation. A FIFA-regulation soccer field is jointly used by the adjacent Edward R. Roybal Learning Center and the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks. An outdoor amphitheater in a grotto provides an ideal setting for environmental and natural history education, and other public events.

Dear Sir/Madam, I have been frequent user of the San Vicente Mountain Park trails for nearly 10 years. On the trail/fire road that starts at Mulholland Dr and Encino Hills Drive intersection and ends in Reseda, there is a dangerous area that can cause a person harm. Once the trail/fire road goes past the Nike Missile Site and continues on to Reseda, about 0.5 miles down there is a dangerous area on the trial. Over the years, due to erosion, a section of the trail/fire road has eroded and has a steep (15-20 feet) drop. Now the steep drop has encroached about 2 feet into the trail/fire road. Also, the drop is not obvious until you get very close to it. A lot of hikers, bikers and DWP vehicles use this trail. I am concerned that someone unfamiliar with the area will fall and sustain injuries. I believe this situation has persisted for over a year and has progressively worsened. Something needs to be done to warn the general public and proper barrier needs to created so someone doesn't inadvertently fall into this area. Also, repairs need to be carried out to remedy this dangerous situation.
