Attn TDLers! As some of you might know already, it's official: we're gonna have to skip our beloved tour this year. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. What about the camaraderie? What about that whole "Verité/finding my truth balderdash?" Can I really make it through the year without guzzling Grandpa Bob's Pickle Juice? If I don't bake in the late-July sun for umpteen hours and curse all existence, who will? And dammit .... WHAT ABOUT THE SOCKS?!

Not. Going. Anywhere. We're just gonna keep that pickle juice in the jar for a year (we've heard it gets better with age, anyhow). Our plan is to bring TDL back for 2020, socks 'n all.

In the meantime...on behalf of fearless leader Greg Laemmle, Captain Wayne Ridetime Howard (what time is it?), our intrepid Ride Marshal Team, and the entire Laemmle crew, wishing you smooth roads and glorious trails.

In our latest edition of "TDL 2018 Reconsidered" we bring you "Memories of a Pit Stop." And what a stop it was! Gigantic love to Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition (PASCSC) super volunteer Blair Miller and her intrepid crew. Together, they created an oasis for us in the Laemmle Playhouse 7 courtyard with free Jones Coffee Roasters iced coffee, Blaze Pizza, plus and an exceedingly warm welcome at just the time we all needed it.

PASCSC works diligently to make our streets safer, our transportation more inclusive, and our neighborhoods cleaner and healthier. Consider lending your support to their vital mission at https://www.pasadenacsc.org/#join-us.

Big thanks to Greg Gunther at PASCSC and Colin Bogart of LACBC for behind-the-scenes coordination. High-five to the entire event-day crew, who, along with the aforementioned captain Blair, included Misch Anderson, David Azevedo, Jeff Hall, Dan Huynh, and Bin Lee. Plus, shout out to shutterbug Mike Pashistoran for capturing and sharing his images at the stop, a few of which are featured in this post.

And finally, let's not forget the superb team at the Laemmle Playhouse 7, led by theatre managers Jenny and Geoff who, as usual, put out a fine spread and tended to our needs.

Thanks all – can't wait to see what you have in store for us in 2019! In the meantime, let's enjoy a few photo memories...

Mulling things over now for two weeks (and two days) since the TDL Peleton and Pickle Brigade (aka, Ride Marshals) rolled out of Santa Monica on our annual Sock Quest ... and can I just say: we came, we pedaled, we conquered!

Couldn't have happened without phenomenal contributions across the board. Our 2018 Honor Roll has to start with Route Master/Ride Captain Wayne Ridetime Howard and his band of Merry Ride Marshal Pranksters: Best-Sweep-In-The-West Lac Vuong, Back-And-Badder-Than-Ever Jason Hurst, Three-Time-Stalwart George Marxelly, and First-Time-Young-Guns Christopher Dee, Oshane Johnson (OJ), and GusTavo Adolfo Guerra Vasquez (who gets serious points for doing the TDL/Climate Ride PNW double!), plus our awesome Segment Marshals Will Todd and Patrick Pascal. Omnipresent and ready to serve, these guys "did a job" ... and then some! Thank you brave sirs.

Further acclaim is due to all the Laemmle staff who took such great care of us at registration (setting up at an ungodly hour) as well as out on the road, starting with Laemmle's Special Events Coordinator and Goddess of Coffee and Donuts Erin Rogers LaBrie and her crack pit stop crew headed by theater managers, Lexi (Laemmle Claremont 5), Jenny (Laemmle Playhouse 7), April (Laemmle NoHo 7), Cassie (Laemmle Glendale), Jimmy (Laemmle Town Center 5) and last but certainly not least, Laemmle Monica Film Center GM and after-party host Sir Isaac Wade. Rounding out the Laemmle staff is our social media guru Ben Garber and, drumroll please ... that blue-casted international man of mystery, 2018 TDL route bomber, cycling maniac and sustainability hawk, 3rd generation proprietor of Laemmle Theatres, you-can't-keep-a-good-man-down (but-he-still-doesn't-get-the-socks) ... Greg Laemmle! Greg didn't ride, but if you were there, you know he was a huge presence on the route doing whatever was necessary and being the consummate cheerleader. Thx Mr. Laemmle for once again sharing your passion and making this all possible. :-)

As usual, our theater staff got all kinds of wonderful volunteer support, this time from the brilliant minds of Dane Flanigan (registration), Adrian Gonzales (NoHo), Sheryl Myerson (finish), Nicole Rostoker (finish, as always!), and joni yung (start/finish). Thx guys, super appreciated!

We had amazing Pit Stop Partners this year. Starting with TDL standard-bearers MBC (Montebello Bicycle Coalition) who NOT ONLY fully represented with 15 riders, but also hosted Pit Stop #1 in Montebello (of course!) and put up those life-saving yellow route signs at the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel River. Big time love to Maribel Briseño, Monica Nuñez, Daniel Nunez, and the entire MBC crew! Next up is Carlos Morales who so generously turned his Stans Bike Shop into a handy and, as it turned out, critical water stop in Azusa, helping riders bridge to the next major stop in Pasadena (Laemmle Playhouse 7) . Speaking of Pasadena, was that a pit stop OR WHAT!? Stocked with free Jones Coffee Roasters cold brew, free Blaze Pizza slices, and plentiful bike racks, we've never had it so good! And it was ALL orchestrated by grassroots cycling/pedestrian advocates Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition. Beyond grateful to PASCSC's Greg Gunther for coordination, Blair Miller and her team for staffing the booth and ministering to our (at 93 miles) tired, overheated, and in-need-of-sustenance riders, plus Colin Bogart at the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition - LACBC for making the connection. And since we're on the topic of LACBC, let's not forget their Team LACBC - Climate Ride Training Series, piloted by none other than our very own Wayne Ridetime Howard (dude is everywhere!) who got so many of our Team LACBC cohorts ready and in shape for TDL -- not to mention the various Climate Ride charitable adventures.

Is there more? There's more. I mean who can deny that unmistakable van that magically pops up anywhere and everywhere needed? Yep, I'm talkin' about L.A. cyclists' favorite guardian angel, the indispensable Thomas Ward (Crankin' TIME Cycling - SAG & Transport) and as his top-notch SAG services. Speaking of popping up everywhere, kudos to our new photographer, Paige Craig. Trying to capture an event of this magnitude/distance flying solo (along with her driver, Chris) cannot be easy. But, as our official photo album bears out (https://www.facebook.com/pg/TourDeLaemmle/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2123781871194882, you just can't argue with the results! Thank you Paige. Never has TDL been chronicled so well and with so much artistry. Another bona fide artist would be Dan Hanasono. No matter your pace, you saw Dan all along the route. Not because he rode (he didn't). Not because he couldn't (he's a beast). But because the beloved Dan Hanosono is the designer of BOTH our very first official TDL Jersey and the infamous Pickle Marshal Jersey. Dan, you were missed but you were SO THERE in spirit. Oh, and did I mention that Dan helped spec the colors for this year's socks? Special mention on the design front goes to Trippin' Rippens (aka Michael A Rippens) for much-valued consultation and life-sized pickle illustration. And while we're at it, let's officially recognize Ezra (Ez Laemmle) who, back in the day, created the "movie camera/projector/cyclist" icon which has become so synonymous with our little tour (and memorialized now on both jersey and socks!).

In addition to Jones Coffee and Blaze Pizza in Pasadena, we had usual-suspects food cohorts in Willy and his crew at Vicious Dogs in NoHo (50% off scrumptious dogs!), The Donut Man on Route #66 (which, aside from the in-season fresh peach goodness -- OMG! -- filled up many a water bottle with ice), the socially conscious, pit stop favorite This Bar Saves Lives, and bet-you-can't-guess-what from Canter's Deli on Fairfax. And lest we forget, a tip of the helmet to our usual (but definitely not suspect) TDL mechanics: David and Sean of Sunset Cycles. Where would we be without these guys flexing their hex wrenches in Claremont? No, don't tell me -- I don't want to know. Also to be filed in the "department of necessary things" are all the tubes, pumps, and bike lights supplied by Jim and helpful staff at Performance Bicycle. Shop Performance. So if you were wondering how to get your hands on those freakin' awesome, lightweight, portable bike racks for your next cycling event, talk to our pal Greg at MBB Valet Rack - Moved By Bikes. You know who else knows their racks? Our bike valet, SP Plus who always makes the transition to the after-party so incredibly seamless.

And finally (yeah, we're actually wrapping this thing up), to all you TDL RIDERS out there who made a gigantic 139-mile loop around L.A. County on one of the hottest days of the year (and if it wasn't really one of the hottest days of the year, I say screw it, it was!), who drowned in your own sweat and drank stanky, blissful pickle juice to get through the day, who overcame whatever limitations you needed to overcome, and who kept pedaling (dammit!) despite it all ... you have our respect, our admiration, and our gratitude. Y'all are the true heroes of TDL 2018. Until next year... "SOCKS ON!"

- Marc Horwitz, Ride Director

Hey TDLers, time for some long overdue acknowledgments. And how can we not start with "MBC in da house!!" That would be the Montebello Bicycle Coalition for the uninitiated. An official chapter of LACBC (L.A. County Bicycle Coalition), MBC is traditionally the most well-represented crew on TDL ... and this year was no exception with 15 MBC riders rolling with us. NOT ONLY THAT, but if you did TDL, you know they hosted a kick-ass pit stop for us in Montebello City Park, perfectly situated about half-way to Claremont. And NOT ONLY THAT, they put up those route signs on both the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel River paths to make sure none of us got lost out there. So big ups to MBC as a whole and special shout out to their fearless leader, Maribel Briseño, for making it all happen and greeting us with such enthusiasm out there. :-) Plus huge thanks to Monica Nunez and Daniel Nunez who not only staffed the stop with Maribel but went out at the crack of dawn to throw up those route markers. Hard to imagine a TDL without MBC. They go together like, well, ... popcorn and pickle juice!

In honor of MBC, we created an album of all the official TDL photos that included their riders. Check it out...

One week since we launched the Great Sock Chase of 2017 (aka TDL Vérité) ... and what an amazing day it was!

So many people to thank, including Route Master/Ride Captain Wayne Ridetime Howard and his intrepid Ride Marshal team: Lac Vuong (sweep), Ramon Bonilla, Jason Hurst , and George Marxelly, the heroic Thomas Ward of Crankin' TIME Cycling - SAG & Transport, the incomparable Erin Rogers LaBrie (Laemmle Events Coordinator, check-in/finish) and her pit stop crew headed by theater managers Lexi (Laemmle Claremont 5), Jenny (Laemmle Playhouse 7), April (Laemmle NoHo 7), and Jimmy (Laemmle Town Center 5), the indispensable Nicole Rostoker (finish line volunteer), Laemmle Monica Film Center Center GM and after-party host Sir Isaac Wade, Laemmle webmaster and social media guru Ben Garber, and of course cycling advocate, cinema impresario, and man about L.A. – Mr. Greg Laemmle himself – who started all this magnificent 135-mile madness!

Also, a quick shout out to our sponsors -- This Bar Saves Lives, David and Sean of Sunset Cycles Claremont (pop-up repair), Willy and his crew at Vicious Dogs (NoHo), and all the beautiful people at Grandpa Bob's Cram Bustin' Pickle Juice. You all added flava to our ride!

Finally, to all you TDL RIDERS out there who battled heat, fatigue, traffic and whatever other nonsense you had to overcome to engage that next pedal stroke ... and the next ... and the next. You guys persevered. You inspired. You triumphed. My socks off to ya'!

4 flats between us, mud all over us, 13% grade to challenge us, rain drops and sweat blinding us, yet our spirits lifted us for a great Laemmle team ride #1 - Shabbos Rollers - Tour de Summer Camps. Join US next time!!
For those wondering what to wear with the TDL jersey, may I suggest the Hitchable Flounce Skirt in purple and the Leopard Bloomers from Bikie Girl Bloomers. #nextyear
Now that's what I call #hangingout! Thank you for the awesome pictures!
Awesome pics. Sorry I missed this year. Is the route online anywhere? (need to start prepping for next year)

Thank you all for coming out yesterday. I hope that the 5th Annual Tour de Laemmle delivered all the joy, triumph, aches, anguish and sweat you've come to expect. The TdL team will ultimately update with photos and such. But first, we need to focus our energy on getting the new theatre open in Glendale (finally!). Keep posting photos. Keep updating your stories. And mostly, keep the rubber side down and stay safe out there. We need you back for TdL 2019.
