In 2015, I returned to Los Angeles to continue my work with the Transgender community. I’m so proud and humbled to be the Transgender Health Program Manager for St. John’s Well Child & Family Center, where I have the honor of serving almost 2,000 transgender patients in South Los Angeles – patients who would not otherwise have access to trans-competent and affordable healthcare. The reason I applied for the position at St. John’s Well Child & Family Center was to make a direct impact on the lives of transgender people and to fight against the social injustices we face as transgender people: racism, sexism, transphobia, xenophobia, misogyny, patriarchy, white supremacy, cisgender privilege, etc. Working as the Transgender Health Program Manager at St. John’s has empowered me to continue to fight and create sustainable change that dismantles social injustices in South Los Angeles. The transgender community is one of the most discriminated against, marginalized and impoverished in Los Angeles. Transgender individuals are at risk for discrimination, hate crimes, violence, HIV, homelessness, substance abuse and suicide -- with many fighting for the right to simply exist.

Tonight, Friday, October 13th, marks the opening night of our 2nd Annual TransNation Film Festival, where we will screen many diverse films that celebrate our trans histories and experiences. Tonight, we will be screening the movie “The Life and Death of Marsha P. “Pay It No Mind” Johnson. I know that the manner in which this particular film was made and funded brings up many concerns and questions in our trans community and we welcome community dialogue. This highlights the systemic dilemma that our trans community faces - structural racism in the entertainment world and in the foundations who choose not to exercise their capacity to fund films and projects that are spear-headed by trans people of color. As a result, our CEO and President Jim Mangia has pledge that St. John’s Well Child & Family will reach out to Reina Gossett and financially commit $10,000 to her future projects.

The Transgender Health Program, which is made up of all trans people of color at St. John's Well Child & Family Center believes that if we provide comprehensive and culturally competent health and social services for transgender people – services that address more than individual risk factors but also the social and structural determinants that drive those behaviors – we can vastly improve people's quality of life, and overall health and well-being. We work to honor this by intentionally building our systems of care around those intersections on a case by case basis -- building a more innovative and healthy future for South Los Angeles.

Shea Diamond: Love Letter to the LGBTQ Community

Eleganza performer, Shea Diamond: "I was nervous throughout the performance but after I got off the stage someone walked up to me with tears in their eyes and said thank you so much for writing the song that tells my whole story. It was in that moment I understood Pride as trans singer/songwriter. I became a vessel to remind the community that we are not alone and when united we can do anything." We can't wait to experience her powerful voice at Eleganza on October 21! Get tickets here: http://bit.ly/2wFRsTY

Why Transgender People Should Be the Ones Telling Transgender Stories

The programmers of TransNation Film Festival are aware of and concerned about Reina Gossett’s allegations about the film The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson, but unfortunately they surfaced days before our film festival. We are a low-budget, grassroots fundraiser for St. John's Trans Health Program, so to pull this film over the current controversy would be unfair to our guest Victoria Cruz, to our audience, and to the charity.

We invited Victoria Cruz to appear to honor her lifetime of service to the trans community and for investigating the death of Marsha P. Johnson, which is the centerpiece of The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson. We’d be doing a disservice to Ms. Cruz, and our entire community of trans elders, by not remaining true to our mission to honor her.

We approached Reina Gossett and Sasha Wortzel to program Happy Birthday, Marsha! early on, but they weren't ready to show it; we support their work and sincerely hope to show Happy Birthday, Marsha! next year.
