Craig Taubman

Craig Taubman My take on life, liberty, joy and the pursuit of justice. It was sometime during the summer of 2009 when Craig woke up and asked himself when the last time he saw one of his recordings in a record store.

While Craig’s live events were continuing to speak to thousands, his record sales had been declining for years. His own CDs as well as his compilation CD’s produced with other artists were simply not flying off the shelves as fast as they use to. The reason was obvious. The record industry was collapsing. There were no record stores! Craig realized the need to adjust or get left behind. Since that

Today I was singing David Mallets song: “Inch by inch, row by row, I'm gonna make this garden grow. All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground"

On this Shabbat celebrating the harvest holiday of Sukkot, joy filled the Pico Union Project garden. You could smell it in the air, touch it with your hands and see it in the butterfly who said thank you - Shabbat Shalom.

Show us some PUP Love! « The Pico Union Project

If you were one of the thousands of people who joined us online for the High Holidays we thank you for being part of the Pico Union Project community.

But now comes the critical question for us all - how can we ensure that 5782 will be better than 5781?
And more directly, how can the Pico Union Project help us all build back better as we emerge from the challenges of the past year and a half?

The answer is really pretty simple. Do more of what we're doing. We don’t just create musical spiritual events, we distribute produce and vaccines to 1000’s of families every week, care for the homeless, mentor high school youth, plant trees in an urban desert and most recently committed to support a refugee family that fled Afghanistan to resettle in Los Angeles.

And all we need to do more of what we're doing, is for you to do more of what you're doing, for nothing happens without the support and engagement of our extended family-- the members that make us who we are. Whether you've been a volunteer, a mentor a donor or an online visitor please join us once again in building a more just and compassionate community.

On the first day of Rosh Hashana we concluded our services at the Pico Union Project with an uplifting call to action, believing that now was the time to elevate our prayers and fears to action. We felt it was on us - Aleinu to do something to improve our community.

Please watch this 7 minute video from the service and join us in helping a refugee Afghani family of five resettle in Los Angeles.

Kaddishel

For many the Yom Kippur themes of life and death are too much. It's my favorite Holy Day. Some see it as a dress rehearsal for death - I see it as a refresher course for life.

I wrote this song in honor of my great relationship with my Great Uncle Louie who asked me before he died if I would be his "Kaddishel" - would I recite the Kaddish for him? I was only 30 years old, I was next and he was passing the generational torch

With each new day, I learn there is no dress rehearsal, no game. this is it.

Jewels of Elul – Great wisdom. No Guilt.

I never met @AaronDorfman and yet I hold him in high regard. Of this year’s 29 Jewels, his is the one the touched me to my core. Grateful to Elka Abramson for the introduction and to his parent’s for planting the seed.

I grew up in a small town in Northern Wisconsin in the 1970s. The measure of diversity was the occasional Minnesota Vikings enthusiast who bucked the tide of the Green Bay Packers’ Cheesehead fanatics. But in that bastion of homogeneity, my parents managed to raise me with wide citizenships. My parents met in the Teacher Corps in Kentucky in 1968, my father hailing from affluent, Jewish Long Island and my mother from a working-class town of 200 in Protestant Northern Minnesota.
Embracing difference was hard-wired into their relationship, something they modeled again and again: My father cast a Black girl in the role of Don Quixote in the school’s production of “Man of La Mancha”—not a popular move in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1970.
I spent many weekends in Superior, Wisconsin, cleaning, painting, and doing repairs at the homes of people living with severe physical and mental disabilities, the preservation of whose dignity and the beauty of whose living spaces were of paramount concern to both my parents. And when, now in St. Paul in the mid-1980s, our rabbi was fired by our synagogue after coming out, my parents banded together with a handful of other families to launch a new congregation with her as its rabbi, the first mainstream synagogue in America with an out le***an rabbi.
Throughout my childhood, my parents instilled in me a commitment to valuing and respecting difference, but it was the showing—far more than the telling—that’s been their enduring gift.

The bad news? The FBI recorded the largest number of hate crimes last year since 2008, mostly due to a rise in anti-Black & anti-Asian hate crimes.

The Good News? Anti-Jewish hate crimes are down by 29%.

The Bad news? It might impact fundraising efforts for some Jewish organizations.

The Good news? Anti-Jewish hate crimes are down by 29%!

I think it's time we accentuate the positive and seed messages of hope and possibility, in place of doom and despair. As Herzl said, “If you will it, it is not a dream! I also think it’s time we reach out and support our Asian and black communities.

I’m guessing if you haven’t yet signed up for High Holiday Services it’s likely not on your radar or a priority.

You’re the norm not the exception. According to a recent study, only 17% of U.S. Jews said they attend religious services, while 74% said they participated in a Seder last year. We think too many people are missing out on an uplifting, uniquely Jewish experience.

That’s why we’re inviting you to come as our guests. It doesn’t matter where you are (we’re online ) or who you are (everyone’s welcome) to join our community of spirit and change.
Cost? Our High Holy Day Gatherings are pay-what-you-can, so if you choose there is no charge. And should you choose to support our mission of Tikkun Olam – Social Justice, we will gladly accept your tax-deductible gift,

Give yourself a chance; give us a try. You have everything to gain.

I grew up listening to news from some pretty incredible men. (there were no woman broadcasters in those days). Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley and locally Warren Olney. I am grateful to Janice Kamenir-Reznik for the introduction and to Warren Olney for today's Jewel of Elul

My father taught me a lesson critical to my career as a political reporter: don’t romanticize Washington, DC.We moved there from Berkeley in 1953 after his appointment as assistant attorney general. One summer day, before high school classes had started, he told me to put on a suit and come for a ride. At the Justice Department, I met J. Edgar Hoover, whose name I recognized. At the Capitol, I met Senators of both political parties. It was all very cordial. But, as we drove home, my father explained, “I just want you to know that powerful people put their pants on one leg at a time, just like we do.” He also prescribed what I’ve learned is a High-Holidays teaching: “Judge them by what they do, not what they say.” When school began, my classmates were mostly the sons and daughters of Democrats, who’d been dominant for so long, and one said, ”Why would your father be a Republican?” When I asked, Dad said, “Son, the only thing that keeps me a Republican is the Democrats.” He was later instrumental in creating the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ, just one of his actions that outraged J. Edgar Hoover. By the time I started reporting on politics. I was ready for anything.

Here's what happens when you have an idea and a community the embraces you and your idea. Terri's idea was simple. If you provide people with carts, they'll be able to take home more produce. With two cars in my household, I've never really thought about how much food I can schlep from the grocery store. How do you love your neighbor? By LETTING them know you and GETTING to know them. Thanks Terri for the idea. Thank you friends of Pico Union and Council Member Gil Cedillo for underwriting the carts and thank God for this opportunity. Shabbat Shalom.

"History repeats itself because nobody was listening the first time." Welcome to 1933.
Please will you let us know in advance your schedule for Yom Kippur? Thank you!
In late February, our world was turned upside down with COVID, infecting people regardless of race, creed or financial standing. The Pico Union Project lost all its rental income, which accounted for 70% of our annual budget. We questioned how we would keep our doors open. Within days, we received the answer - unprecedented support from hundreds of individuals, businesses and government agencies who joined us in guaranteeing that some of our community’s most vulnerable families would be cared for. In order to continue serving our community through the end of the year, we need to raise $60,000 through our NO SHOW BALL FUNDRAISER. Since our founding in 2013, we have been committed to social justice and building community. We took the “love your neighbor” principle to heart and set out to meet our neighbors, opening our doors to five different faith communities and creating programs such as Vida Sana, FaithsGiving, Keep it Clean and Green and wellness programs in nutrition, bereavement and yoga. To some we were crazy, to others dreamers, and to many of our neighbors we were angels. We received the feedback with open hearts and went about our mission of spreading love. We have used this time to scale our food distribution from 250 families every other week to up to 2000 families every week. We have planted a grove of 50 avocado and citrus trees that in three years will provide our community with abundant fresh fruit and has already created a sense of communal pride. We have committed to join Rev Najuma Pollard in establishing the Entrepreneurial Training Program to mentor 20 African American youth in business. Meanwhile, we have continued to love our neighbors throughout Los Angeles and across the country by offering innovative virtual events, performances, services and inclusive conversations. And, we are actively planning for High Holy Days that will offer a spiritual experience like no other … in a year when this is what we need more than ever. Check out this No Show Ball Video and find out how you can join on this sacred journey in making a difference in the lives of our Pico Union Project Families. www.picounionproject.org/noshow
