Rest in Power Rep. John Lewis

Congressman John Lewis led an extraordinary life as a man who stood for justice, unity and peace. As a civil rights leader and 17-term Georgia congressman, he was ahead of his time. We are deeply saddened by his passing from pancreatic cancer. Our community knows the impact of this disease and recognize that Black Americans have an almost 20% higher incidence rate. When pancreatic cancer impacts one group, it impacts us all and Rep. Lewis is a devastating reminder of how we’ve been touched by this disease.

This exciting genetic testing trial has expanded the eligibility requirements.

If you have a first-degree family member (parent, sibling, or child) with pancreatic cancer, knowing your own risk of developing the disease just got a little bit easier—the innovative GENERATE Study has expanded its eligibility parameters.

GENERATE is aimed at healthy people with a family member who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. “The goal is to teach these individuals about their risk of pancreatic cancer, learn about genetic testing and the benefits, and get them through the genetic testing process if they choose,” explains Syngal. “It involves a simple blood test, and if we find out participants carry a gene mutation, we help them get enrolled into surveillance protocols with the goal of preventing pancreatic cancer.”

Your support of the LACC Helps make this great research possible! Whether you join us near or far you can help us make a difference for those facing pancreatic cancer 💜

It is an honor to share that two-time Seed Grant Awardee Dr. Alexandros Tzatsos was recently published in Nature Communications. His research, which links chronic pancreatitis to the development of pancreatic cancer, has also been awarded an R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These results are validations that our investments in early research pay off!

Thanks to your support, we continue to fund crucial research towards a cure!

Dearest LACC Community,

Your healthy and safety is of the utmost importance to us as we prepare for what the 23rd LA. Cancer Challenge 5K Walk/Run might look like on October 25, 2020. Our signature fundraiser has been held in SoCal, rain or shine, for over two decades and this year will be no exception.

We’re currently hoping we can safely gather together in person at UCLA *while also preparing for a virtual walk/run* experience. No matter the challenges we’re facing today, our passion to find a cure still burns bright and the LA Cancer Challenge is when we shine the brightest.

We look forward to walking for research & racing towards a cure with you this October!

Resarchers find way to improve cancer outcomes by examining patients' genes

The research offers answers to questions that have long perplexed doctors. "Every clinician has this experience: Two patients come in with exactly the same cancer—same grade, same stage, received the same treatment. One of them does very well, and the other one doesn't," Dutta said. "The assumption has always been that there is something about the two that we didn't understand, like maybe there are some tumor-specific mutations that one patient had but the other did not. But it occurred to us that with all this genomic data, there is another hypothesis that we could test."

https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-03-resarchers-cancer-outcomes-patients-genes.html

By mining a vast trove of genetic data, researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine are enhancing doctors' ability to treat cancer, predict patient outcomes and determine which treatments will work best for individual patients.

Blood test accurately detects over 50 types of cancer, often before symptoms show

Great news about a blood test that accurately detects over 50 types of cancer, often before symptoms show!

"Considering the burden of cancer in our society, it is important that we continue to explore the possibility that this test might intercept cancers at an earlier stage and, by extension, potentially reduce deaths from cancers for which screening is either not available or has poor adherence. To our knowledge, this is the largest clinical genomics study, in participants with and without cancer, to develop and validate a blood test for early detection of multiple cancers.”

https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2020-03/esfm-bta032720.php

Researchers have developed the first blood test that can accurately detect more than 50 types of cancer and identify in which tissue the cancer originated, often before there are any signs of the disease. The test has a false positive rate of less than 1% meaning that less than 1% of people would be...
