Contemporary artist Lin Evola has taken the use of recycled materials in art to new, emotional heights. Evola recognized the damage and pain brought on by gun violence and vowed to use her skills as an artist to recycle this needless violence into hope and beauty. This led to the creation of her Peace Angels Project in which decommissioned arms are recycled and converted into angel statues as symbols of peace.

This day in Women's History Month we celebrate Alice-Guy Blachรฉ. Take some time to admire her work, which paved the way so other women could work in the film industry.

Born on July 1, 1873 in Paris, France, she was the youngest of 5 children. Her father owned a bookstore and a publishing company in Chile. During her childhood she would often travel between Chile and France. In 1891, her father passed away unexpectedly, and Alice started training as a typist and stenographer to help her newly widowed mother.

In 1894 she started working as a secretary for Leon Gaumont at 'Comptoir general de la photographie'. During this time she made valuable connections with a myriad of clients and met pioneering film engineers like Georges Demeny and Auguste and Louis Lumiere.

In 1895, after attending a Lumiere event screening an early film called "Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factoryโ€, Alice had her own idea to create films not only for promotional purposes but to portray fictional stories. In 1896 Alice would make what we know now as the world's first narrative film called "La Fee aux Choux" (The Cabbage Fairy), making her the first female director and the only one from 1896-1906. She gained the role of head of production at Gaumont's production company, and after this short, her films explored a variety of genres, including comedies, adventures, romances, thrillers, westerns, religious epics, and documentaries.

Intrigued with exploring sexism, in 1906, Alice created the shorts "The consequences of Feminism" and "Sticky Womenโ€, films that rethink the role of women in society and womenโ€™s desires. In 1906, Alice also created the film "The Life of Christโ€, which was her biggest production while at Gaumont Productions company with 300 extras, and in 1912 created the film "A Fool and His Money" which is the first narrative film with an all-African-American cast.

In 1907, Alice would marry Herbert Blachรฉ who was the production manager for Gaumont's operations in the US. Alice and Herbert partnered with George A. Magie and created the Solax Company in 1910. This company became the largest pre-Hollywood studio in America. At Solax, Alice worked as the artistic director and created many of the studio's films. After only two years, the company was a success and a pioneer in technological innovations. In 1913 Alice directed the film "The Thief" and it became the first script sold by William Moulton Marston who would later create Wonder Woman.

A couple years later, Herbert created his own studio and left Blachรฉ. Unable to find work in Hollywood, Alice moved back to France with her two kids. She tried to create film opportunities in Nice and Paris, but couldn't. She stopped making films but wrote an autobiography in the 1940s that would be published later in 1976.

Let's take a moment and thank this magnificent woman for her achievements in the film industry, an industry she was able to find success in even when it was designed for her to fail.

THE 3RD AND FINAL DAY OF 2020 PTAFF IS TOMORROW!

We've had great panels and exciting discussions these last 2 days of PTAFF's virtual event. We've watched provocative films, had the opportunity to dance, heal, laugh and cry... and there is still more to come!

"Colorism, ADOS, and Hollywood" and "How Do We Get Back To The Business of Entertainment, Post COVID-19 And Civil Unrest?"

Our Self-care Hub will be open through the end of the event to help all who are interested in new/improved methods of self-care, healing, and mental health care during the time of COVID-19 and beyond.

Lastly, DJ Imphamus Amadeuz (New York), will lend his talents to end the event on a happy and positive note!
