El Sereno Middle School Music Department

Dear parents and students:
We know that this time is very difficult for all and we are here for you.

A couple of updates:
1. Keep up with Mr. Legaspi or Mrs. Austin on the ESMS webpage. They are posting everything for their classes on here!
https://elserenoms-lausd-ca.schoolloop.com/

2. Keep up with messages or updates on Schoology that your teachers are writing you. Some students are falling VERY behind on schoolwork and it's starting to overwhelm many of us because of the number of parents we are calling.

3. If you are having issues with the iPads, please email us ASAP so we can let the school technician know what is going on. We have been successful getting two students in touch with him.

4. Grab and go food centers are located for our El Sereno students at Wilson High School, 4500 Multnomah St., Los Angeles, CA 90032. Centers are open from 7AM-11AM.

5. We are trying our best to stay available with all of you as we are also balancing teaching and our home life. Please bear with us as we are still adjusting to this distance learning.

If you have any questions, we're here for you.

Best,
ESMS Music Department.

Hello everyone!

By now, you are all well aware that our campus as well as ALL campuses across LAUSD and beyond in LA County are closed for the next two weeks.

A few things to know:

1. Learning is STILL happening but will happen online exclusively.

2. For both Mr. Legaspi and Mrs. Austin, please make sure you have access to Schoology. If you have not signed up by now, the link to access this for parents is:

https://parentws.lausd.net/parentauthen/index.jsp

for our students the link is:

https://parentportalapp.lausd.net/parentaccess/studentLogin.jsp

3. We will BOTH be posting assignments under each course. Check daily for any updates to the class.

4. Please check also the school website at www.esms.org as we will be putting these notices on our individual class pages.

5. If you have any other questions, you can always email your child's teacher at [email protected] or [email protected]

We are hoping everyone stays safe and sound and of course, do not hesitate to reach out.

Best,
ESMS Music Department

Parents and students we are writing today to inform you about steps we are taking as a department to ensure that students and staff are safe during this time.

1. Students will be using instruments in certain classes until we get further notice from the district. Other students like beginning band will be assigned individual mouthpieces to take home and use daily. Per the instrument contract, your student is responsible for the mouthpiece and care. Guitar will not be utilizing instruments in class as we are limited in number of instruments that can be one-to-one.

2. All instruments that will be used will be getting cleaned and disinfected on a daily basis. We are asking students if they are sick, to not play the instruments.

3. All trips/performances have been canceled/postponed until further notice. This includes the Garfield Mariachi Festival, East Arts Summit at HP High School, and possibly Music in the Parks at Magic Mountain.

4. Please note that the following handouts were sent home today with your students.

In the event of a school closure, please refer to the following resources.

We are awaiting further instructions from our school leader and the district. If you have any further questions, feel free to msg us here or send us an email.

Thank you

We want to thank all the families, guardians, alumni, and community that have been so supportive of our little department every year.

We also want to thank everyone for coming out to our annual Winter Concert. Any photos or videos you can send us of that day would be much appreciated.

Thank you! Without you, much of what we do would not be possible.

We hope everyone has a safe holiday break and we hope to see all our students in January 2020!

Are you ready?! Only 3 days until our Concert on Thursday night! Join us from 6-8PM in the auditorium!

11/22/2019

Dear parents:
First, thank you to all of you who showed up to our first Family Fun Day! It was so great to see many of you and your families to hear our amazing students perform. Please send us any photos/videos of the performances you may have so that we can share them on our page!

Many students will be taking instruments home this holiday break. Please be aware that students should be working on their technique and music skills that they have learned so far. They will also be going home with practice record logs where they can put down how many minutes they have practiced each day. Please make sure you sign these logs and verify that your child practiced during this time.

In the event that the student did not get an instrument, there is an alternative assignment they can take home to do. Please reach out to your child's teacher if they come home empty-handed.

Thank you and have a great holiday break!

Dear ESMS Music Department Parents/Guardians:

It’s that time again! In preparation for the upcoming fundraising sales, the Music Department has begun speaking to your child about the sales and what the expectations are.

Important key details:

1. Each student will be responsible for a fundraising total of $200 from ALL sales throughout the year..
2. Our First Big Sale, Popcornopolis, will be held in November.
3. The money raised by this sale will cover registration fees and transportation to and from competitions/field trips.
4. There will be prizes for our Top Fundraisers (each teacher will have prizes for their respective students).

Next week, your student will be receiving their first informational packet on Popcornopolis. Help us support them by getting the word out about our fundraising efforts!

If you have any questions/concerns regarding these sales, please contact Mr. Legaspi or Mrs. Austin at 323-224-4700 or email us at [email protected] or [email protected]

Something to consider when you see instruments alone on school buses, etc.

To the music community of the Los Angeles Unified School District:

STEALING INSTRUMENTS IS NOT COOL, NOR WILL IT EVER BE COOL.

If you or anyone else sees instruments in the wrong places, please contact the Los Angeles School Police (213-625-6613).

Keep music alive!

If your new student arrived home this weekend with an iPad: Congrats!

If they did not, there is still time to get to the school to work on the orientation and fill out the paperwork for your child's free iPad. We are working so hard with our administrators to make sure all students have access to this amazing, FREE technology available to all students at ESMS.

If you still have questions, please call the school at 323-224-4700.

It’s August 13th and we are exactly 7 days away from The First Day of School!

Did you know?...
Mr. Legaspi was inspired to pursue a Bachelor of Music Education degree from USC because of Ms. Shea (his Middle School Music Teacher), Dr. Ed Trimis (his High School Band Director), and Mr. Tony White (the LAUSD All City Band Director) his fantastic music teachers/mentors. These three individuals had a great impact on Mr. Legaspi’s life not just musically, but as great educators. Because of their influence, Mr. Legaspi strives to inspire his students just as he was.

Here are a few of the students he has helped shape this past year at ESMS.

Sorry we got behind on factoids about your teachers... Mrs. Austin and Mr. Legaspi are in family-mode and that means they are enjoying their last days off which reminds us...

Oh man... It's August 11th!

Do you know that class starts on Tuesday 8/20? And also... this is going to be Mrs. Austin's 7th year teaching! She was actually an English teacher for a 5th grade class years prior (hence her love of the written word and her reasons for asking for essays from her loving students). However, during those first years at her other school, she was asked to start a mariachi and she learned that she really wanted to be a music teacher instead.

Here she is in full, old-school Mariachi ESMS uniforms, with some of her oldest friends who she met here at ESMS in the Symphony Orchestra and after-school mariachi class. Talk about a throwback! This photo was taken after the Spring Concert of 1996!

12 days until you see this guy!

Mr. Legaspi grew up in the city of Huntington Park and is a graduate of Huntington Park High School. He started his musical studies in middle school and originally wanted to play the tenor saxophone, but there was not enough instruments so he was assigned the trumpet which became his passion.

Here he is with Wil-Dog from Ozomatli

The ESMS Music Department wants you to know that in 13 days... we are BACK! Have you met our teachers? We'll be sharing bits and pieces of information about both of our music teachers over the next 13 days.

First: Did you know Mrs. Austin is an ESMS alumni?! She attended ESMS during the last year that Mr. Frank Lemus was in charge of the Music Department and was introduced to mariachi through his after-school club. It was through his influence that she was motivated to pursue mariachi as an extracurricular activity and it has stuck with her ever since!

Here she is with Ms. Mendoza from South East High at the UTLA Strike Rally in the early Spring.
