5 years ago today, I hosted our FIRST Bruncheon 🤯🤯

It’s been a wild ride to say the least. If I could tell 26 year old Mel anything I would tell her to stay the course, you’re worthy and keep making it up as you go.

I’m forever grateful for the Wedding Pros and couples who’ve brunched with me over the years. ❤️

I’m so excited to see what the next 5 years has in store and to make a bigger impact in the wedding industry. 👊🏾

Swipe ➡️ to see some of my favorite pictures through the years and the Save the Date for the Bruncheon that never was(2020 😓).

Do you miss co-working as much as I do??!

The synergy of sitting a crossed from someone working their hardest to achieve their goals is unmatched.

If you're missing that feeling of in it togetherness, too, I hope you will join me this Wednesday (3/17) from 10 am to 12 pm as the B. Cafe opens its virtual doors. ✨

Link in bio to make your reservation.

Ps. Please feel free to extend an invite to your friends!

If this last year taught me anything, it's how important it is to have a hobby.

See, before last year, I spent 5 years hustling in overtime between my corporate job and building the Bruncheon. I completely lost myself and all my hobbies. When I was forced to stop, I had the hardest time reconnecting with myself and forgot what I did for fun. I've spent most of last year rediscovering who I was as a person and what I liked to do for FUN. That's not to say that working and building the Bruncheon hasn't brought me so much joy, but I now know the importance of existing outside of that.

Whether you're planning your wedding or running a business, I implore you not to lose yourself in the process and use your hobbies to come back home to yourself.

I'm curious, what are some of your hobbies?? I left some of mine in the comments below.

Here’s to 31, living life untamed and being unapologetically myself.

Celebrating my birthday yesterday was more special than many birthdays past. Thanks quarantine for reminding me all you really need in life is family and friends that feel like family.💖

Ps. My sisters are twins hence the matching fits.

I have to admit it was really hard for me to adjust to our new normal. I was stuck in the waiting game while I was waiting I learned some invaluable lessons that helped me adjust and release the fear of planning for the future.

Lessons I learned:

- I’ve learned that sadness and joy can coexist.

- Your guilt doesn’t serve others, so be grateful for what you have and give as much as you can.

- Build brick by brick.

- Be where you are.

- We are not in the same boat but in the same ocean.

What lessons have you learned during COVID times?

This Friday June 5 would have been Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday. The incredible @battymamzelle has put together a website of action to demand justice for #breonnataylor including her idea of sending Birthday cards for Breonna to the AG and Mayor of Louisville, KY. The link is in my bio. Please check it out and participate in as many actions as you can to honor her.

I have 10 extra cards if you would like me to write one on your behalf, please send me a DM with your not. I’m mailing mine out tomorrow afternoon.
There’s also card templates at the link in my bio.

Thank you @thekelseymoore for sharing this movement with me. @battymamzelle for leading the way and @arielsinhaha for your beautiful artwork. ❤️

“Breathe for those who no longer can.” @angelamanueldavis made that statement during my first @aarmy practice and her words cut straight through my soul.
Over the years I’ve held my breath and internalized my heavy heart, my grief and the anger I have for racial injustice because frankly I got tired and grew hopeless.
I know the “she’s black” look that’s made when I meet a new client at work in person for the first time. I know pain of checking someone’s diversity box. I know how it feels to be racially profiled in a store. I know the rage of being on the other end of the N-Word. I know the fear of being stopped by the cops. I know the relief of knowing you made it home safely. Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and so many others have been murdered by racist who have been able to hide behind a system built on Oppression for too long. Breonna, Ahmad & George, your lives mattered and I will breathe for you. ✊🏾❤️ #blacklivesmatter

In honor of Black History Month I thought it would be cool celebrate and share with you some of my Black History.

These crazy kids are my parents. My mom, Carlethe helms from New Jersey and my Dad, Wayne has deep southern roots in Alabama (Roll Tide). My parents served in the military for a combined 31 years (my mom 26 and my dad 5). In the Air Force my mom was an airplane mechanic and my dad worked in air traffic control.

My mom is a real life superhero. She serves our community with the same dedication and passion she served our country with. She is the only black women head High School Coach in our division for both basketball and tennis (with the best record), a mentor, and a student aid. If any of her students or players need anything like a ride to practice or just someone to talk to she is the first person they call because they know she will show up every time!

My dad is the epitome of a #girldad. With our mom being deployed a lot growing up he took on both roles for us. He would braid our hair for school (always 3 braids never 4 🤣), get us to practice and help us up when we got knocked down. Beyond his role of dad, he is a whip smart computer scientists who is also dedicated to serving the community and steps in to be “dad” for any kid that needs one to call.

My mom taught me I could do anything the boys could do with style & grace, and my dad showed me how a man loves, supports and respects a woman living fully in her truth. Together they both taught me how to selflessly serve others and spread love everywhere life takes me.

Swipe through to see a throwback pic of these two on their wedding day... yes, my mom wore combat boots 👊🏾#myblackhistory

I’m absolutely gutted over the news of Kobe Bryant and his daughters passing today.

@arielleestoria words struck me to my care. She absolutely right Kobe loved basketball and gave everything he had to it. In doing so, he inspired kids like me to play with that same love and passion.

My prayers thoughts and prayers are with the whole Bryant family.

Celebrity deaths remind us of a few things but specifically this: 1. They are and have always been just as human, so human in fact that they too cannot avoid the tragedies that life sometimes throw at us. 2. In an instant, the whole world is reminded that we are connected by a single thread, in a single moment, all affected by something at one time. || This is not about pop culture, this is about humanity. We should be so connected that we ALL feel the impact of something so tender and heartbreaking. This life is fragile, so much more fragile than we often remember. We tend to take advantage of each day, the people around us and our experiences because we’re way too used to them. Friends, each day is meant to be savored, filled with new encounters of the Holy Spirit with every breath that we take and covered in LOVE. So much love. We can build whatever world we want to build but if love is not at the center and it crashes before us, then we will be left with nothing. LOVE PEOPLE HARD and let yourself be loved. Hold people close and don’t be afraid to be held back. I don’t know much about basketball but from what I can gather, @kobebryant loved like it was his job and priority and that is a legacy in itself.

Lending Relief was named after our monthly outreaches. We go to lend temporary relief to those living on the streets. We go to listen. We go to build relationship and to be a source of comfort (we hope). We have information for some emergency services but most of the time those we meet just want to talk.
.
The number one question we get the most is “where are you guys from?” Meaning they want to know what we want from them. When we tell them we’re just here to hand out water and basic needs it opens up the opportunity for conversation and to hear someone’s story is truly incredible.
.
We believe every human being has value and when we to go the streets and take the time to visit the homeless it instills value, we believe, on some level. We truly believe love is the answer and that’s why we hit the streets monthly.
.
Keep checking back here to follow our journey on the streets and those we meet and the team.
