Giving Music

Giving Music "Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members".~Pearl S.

Mission: To spread musical joy in nursing homes, children's and VA hospitals, and homeless shelters throughout the city and county of Los Angeles. Our repertoire for the elderly consists of songs from the golden eras of popular music and is designed to evoke fond memories in senior citizens. A number of recent studies have demonstrated that even in the most memory-deficient patients, including those suffering from advanced Alzheimer's, music can spark recollections and evoke cognitive responses, often resulting in alleviation of depression and physical pain. By focusing on music from the 40's and 50's, we connect with elder care patients in ways that until recently, health professionals did not think was possible.

For a guy raised by school teachers there is no greater honor than having the band play for one of their events and that is what we did for the Friendly Educators Group at the Proud Bird last week. When you get a couple of hundred educators together for a Mardi Gras party for sure the spirits will be high. I think the band had as much fun as the audience and loved being invited to share a meal with them. What a great day for all of us.

Back to Canoga Park Senior Center for another party! Of course they wanted our best dance band players so we brought them and had a two hour workout that even included getting California State Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel on stage with us.

A night gig at the Mason's Hall brought our singer Wendy, out into the dancing crowd and we got a lot of sing-a-longs. This crowd was ready to sing as well as dance. What a great room to play in and a great crowd to play for.

It is always nice to get invited back for a holiday production and for the third year we played for the residents and staff at California Acute Care in downtown Los Angeles. The staff did an outstanding job of bringing cheer to the residents through our music and dancing. Very heartwarming and we are looking forward to next year's gig.

Vinyard Senior Center was a new venue for us but there were a lot of old friends there who had seen us at other performances so they were ready! Here's something I learned-When you ask a woman 94 years old what type of music she wants to hear and she answers "I want to dance!" you better be ready to play your best stuff. We were and the Christmas joy was everywhere.

I guess we are the official house band for the Canoga Park Senior Center. They like to have us play for their holiday events and we like it too. We even have senior groupies that ask to sing along with us and have their pictures taken with the band! Guaranteed Canoga Park will always have that combination of food, friends and fun celebrating all the holidays. Kari and friends know how to throw a party!

We were invited back to the Sunland Senior Center for their Chritmas festivities. They have a beautiful location at the foot of the mountains and it was very Christmaslike. We had fun. They had fun. And of course the band loves the Christmas food!

Christmas time has us playing a lot of music, sometimes twice in a day and we are busy spreading joy for the season. One of our annual parties is the Culver City chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. Some of us in the organization are veterans ourselves so this gig is a really special one for us. These are our brothers and sisters and we want to support them any way we can. Music and fun and food seem to get a lot of traction and that's what we did for this annual event.

Slausen Multipurpose Center loves the holidays and they love us in them. This was our fourth gig at the center where the local Los Angeles Police Department really does protect and serve-dinner. It is such a nice evening when we see the police hand out meals and mingle with the community. A lot of dancing and some brave souls singing with the band. We like being part of this community also and look forward to next year's Thanksgiving feast.

The Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks throws the biggest party for the over ninety seniors from the city wide senior centers every year and we are honored to be the band that plays it. I have to say that being over ninety or in the case of about twenty of the guests, over a hundred years old, didn't seem to be an impediment to dancing and having fun. The theme was Caribbean Life and we were in the mood ourselves having steel drummer Alan Lightner join us for that cool Caribbean rhythm sound. Recipe for success? Food, friends and fun. We had them all...

What can I say about the Canoga Park Senior Center? Always in good spirits. Always ready to rock. Shows undying love for the band. And has one of the best senior center leaders in LA, Kari, always throws a good party with a good turnout. Halloween was no exception with great costumes and lots of dancing. We love this gig!!!

The East Area Seniors and the Department of Recreation and Parks asked us to bring some rock and roll to their event at Friendship Auditorium. And we did. Check out the Jerry Lee Lewis video clip and these photos to see that age is no impediment to rocking out! Lots of fun, food and friends.

It usually takes a lot to get a musician to an early morning gig. Unless it is the Breakfast Club at Friendship Auditorium. They always are so full of energy and ready to rock like it was a nightclub. We love this group of positive thinking fans.

One of our best gigs ever, a Grease theme fifties blow out for the Canoga Park Seniors. The joint was rockin' and the turnout in the hundreds. Food, fun and friends is what it is all about and the Giving Music band was in fine form playing the music of our youth and flooding those memories back to us. We love to get the crowd dancing and we did. This is our fourth gig at this venue and it was funtastic. Thanks Kari for putting on a great party and thanks to Humana for the help. And special thanks to the dance instructors from the local Arthur Murray studio for leading the way.

Wednesday night June 22 provided an opportunity to help raise funds for one of our favorite charities. As a social worker myself who has worked extensively with the homeless it is truly an honor to have our band, Giving Music be chosen to play, for the fourth year running, at the annual fundraiser for A Community of Friends who work to help the homeless get into permanent housing. It was a powerful night of joy and congratulations and also an opportunity to see the near new Banc of California Stadium. What an incredible venue. If you haven't seen a game or a concert at this stadium take the next chance you have to go with some friends. We had a great night with food, fun and friends.

The Watts Senior Center celebrated Black History Month and Mardi gras together so you know it was a gala affair and it is always an honor to be chosen to play for these events. This year there was even a high school choir who joined in with us and really kicked it up a notch. Consistent leadership at the center makes everything run smoothly and the band always gets a great welcome. This was a real dress up affair and we got inot he spirt for two hurs of soul and gospel and blues. Great gig, as always. And special thanks to the folks at Humana for coming out and helping us seniors make sense of the health care rules. We love that kind of community involvement!

I swear we have groupies at the Canoga Park Senior Center. Always a big turnout and an enthusiastic crowd, and they aren't shy about asking for their favorite songs. The band loves this gig because of all the great cheers and love, and on Valentine's Day it was just over the top. Kari runs a great center, and our musicians LOVE her and her seniors! Looking forward to the next dance!
