LA Escena is part of the "Diversifying the Classics" performance series, featuring collaborations with Playwrights' Arena and LatinX Theater at UCLA.

Playwrights' Arena will present the fourth "Golden Tongues" with staged readings of adapted Spanish Golden Age plays, and LatinX Theater at UCLA will perform Lope de Vega's "Women and Servants", a play only recently rediscovered after 400 years and translated into English for the first time by UCLA Professor and LA Escena director Barbara Fuchs.

#diversifyingtheclassics translation of Guillen de Castro's La fuerza de la costumbre (The Force of Habit) is up on our Website. Can gender be learned and unlearned? https://t.co/G5me16klGF

Guillén de Castro’s The Force of Habit (La fuerza de la costumbre, c. 1610) is singular among comedias in that it takes the popular device of cross-dressed characters a step further, daring to ask whether gender is something that can be learned and unlearned, or if it is a fact of nature.
