USC Haneulsori | 하늘소리

USC Haneulsori | 하늘소리 HANEULSORI 하늘소리 Official Pungmul Student Organization of USC (Korean Traditional Percussion Group) Haneulsori is a Korean performance group spreading the knowledge of Korean culture through tradition.

We are also a group for people passionate in 한국악 [Korean Traditional Music]. Haneulsori is open to anyone and everyone interested in learning Korean Traditional Drumming! We do not have auditions and do not require any prior experience. We have numerous performances throughout the year, celebrating ChuSeok [Korean Thanksgiving], JiShinBalpKi, Korean Culture Night, and collaborations with other organizations. We finish off the year with an annual spring showcase as a way to show all the hard work our members have been doing. We are also available for requested performances on and off campus. Please submit any performance requests to our performance request form here: https://bit.ly/2WhLB8o Please like or follow our page to stay tuned for more updates, pictures, videos, or any upcoming notices in this official Haneulsori page!

Mission: The mission of Haneulsori is to spread Korean cultural knowledge and Korean traditional music. We want to provide a social group as well as opportunities to learn traditional Korean instruments.

Operating as usual

06/05/2020

Haneulsori is deeply heartbroken and outraged by the unjust murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and the innumerable innocent Black lives at the hands of police. We would like to express our solidarity with the Black community, and our support for the Black Lives Matter movement. We also ask that our fellow Korean-American and Asian-American organizations stand in solidarity with the Black community.

As an Asian-American organization, it is Haneulsori’s duty to not only be inclusive, but to use our platform to challenge racial inequality and injustices. It is our responsibility to use our voices to take action to enact social change, demand fair justice, and, most importantly, listen to and support the Black community in any way that we can. Now, more than ever, is it vital that we stand in support of our fellow brothers and sisters of colour, and call for an end to the systematic racism and police brutality that afflicts the Black community. We must come together and stand up for what is right.

Today, tomorrow, and always, we stand in unity with the Black community, in hopes of creating a better future and society in which Black people do not have to fear losing their lives to a system that has repeatedly failed them. We urge you to use your voices - your positions of privilege - to call for an end to these injustices, and stand in solidarity with our Black brothers and sisters. Do not let the systematic racism of our society beget further tragedies. Sign petitions, donate, organize, educate, protest; just don’t stay silent in the face of injustice. The time to act is now.

Hi Everyone!

It is the time of the year for JSBK again!
Jishinbalpki (JSBK for short) is an annual celebration in which Haneulsori, along with UCLA's Hanoolim, and UCI's Hansori, perform through the streets of Koreatown, bringing good luck and stomping away bad luck for all the community members!
This year's JSBK will be on February 11th (that's next Saturday!!), starting at 9am. We have a couple stationary performances on the way, so don't miss us!

Congrats to our seniors on graduating!!!!! You will be sorely missed, but we know that you will go on to do great things...

Last, but certainly not least (in fact, it's quite the opposite), we have our president, Nara, and our vice president, Jessie!

Nara Kim:
Year: Senior
Major: Linguistics and Psychology
Town of Residence: Koreatown, Los Angeles, California
Bio: Nara has a skin condition called Dermatographia where if one scratches or slaps her skin, it'll swell up and get red. (Her sister, Ara, had a great time leaving an entire hand mark on her back.) When Nara was little, she broke her arm; around that time, her family had relatives visiting so she had to sleep on the floor of her parents' room. When she woke up, she was the only one in the room, but when she tried to get up, it hurt her arm, so she laid there crying for a while until someone came and found her. Nara's nicknames in Haneulsori are "grandma" (from when her hair was blue/silver), "mom" (because she is the mom of the group), and "mim" (an alternate spelling of "mom"). Nara has dyed her hair every color of the rainbow.

Jessie Chang:
Year: Senior
Major: Interactive Media
Town of Residence: Tucson, Arizona
Bio: Jessie played the violin for 13 years; her left hand is bigger than her right hand from doing so. When she was younger, she was so obsessed with the movie 'The Little Mermaid' and wanted to be a mermaid so badly that she took swimming lessons. Jessie is very expert at being late (can confirm). When she was younger, she used to call "shik-hye" (식혜, a sweet Korean rice beverage), "shekki" (do you get it). Haneulsori has been a dating service for her; she met her significant other, Pat Kelly, through a joint event with Hanoolim, which is our brother organization at UCLA. Together, they like to make everyone throw up by writing disgustingly cute messages on each others' Facebook walls and by dressing up in sickeningly adorable couples' costumes that singles cannot ever pull off (this year, they dressed as Cosmo and Wanda).

Moving onto our Top 4 officers! Introducing our secretary, Michelle, and our treasurer, Haely!

Michelle Te Won Seo:
Year: Senior
Major: Biochemistry, B.S.
Town of Residence: Busan, South Korea
Bio: Michelle is a character full of surprises. She used to play various instruments including the harp and the marimba, and she cannot sing well at all, although she has perfect pitch. Michelle has a special talent of being able to sleep in any situation; you can find many pictures of her sleeping on Facebook thanks to her good friend, Josh Byun. Michelle is actually an international student, and lives in south South Korea. Michelle's younger sister, Christine, goes to Busan University of Foreign Studies (they are quite close and have the same sense of humor). Michelle pushes norms and only has one double eyelid on her left eye; her right eye has a monolid. Michelle likes to think of herself as a creative person. The main reason that Michelle stayed in Haneulsori for all of her college years was because of the love and care all the Haneulsori alumni have showed her.

Haely Ryu:
Year: Senior
Major: Biology, B.S.
Town of Residence: Duluth, Georgia
Bio: Haely is an avid Brown Eyed Girls fan; the greatest moment of her life was was when Gain from BEG waved at her at their concert. Haely enjoys cooking and is amazing at it; she is especially talented at cooking Korean food, and she has performed the laborious feat of making oxtail soup (꼬리곰탕). Contrary to her usual abrasive nature (she said it, not us), she loves her Haneulsori family; she shows all of us tough love because she wants us to do well in whatever we are learning at the time. And lastly, but certainly not leastly, HAELY WAS RECENTLY ADMITTED INTO THE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA!!!! Congrats, Haely! We wish you the best of luck in the new chapter in your life.

Jonathan Lee:
Year: Super senior (5-year Architecture program)
Major: Architecture
Town of Residence: Busan, South Korea
Bio: When asked to give some information to put in his bio, Jonathan took his time and claimed that he would be the "bestseller" of Haneulsori. Here is what he came up with:
"1. Jonathan Lee will become an architect one day.
2. Jonathan Lee will be graduating this semester and he needs a job.
3. Jonathan Lee will move to Europe in his 30s and will find his love.
4. Jonathan Lee will move to Malibu in his 50s and will design his house there.
5. Jonathan Lee will have kids and dogs."
(Disclaimer: The USC Haneulsori page is not for making dating profiles.)
We would like to include some additional information about Jonathan. Jonathan is often called "Jonadong" by some, a nickname coined by Michelle (of USC Haneulsori) and Hank (of UCLA Hanoolim) as a combination of his Korean and American name. Jonathan's interests include Instagramming, #basic hashtags, and talking like an ahjussi, which means "middle-aged man" in Korean. Jonathan is (disputably) the most stylish individual in Haneulsori; this title is under contest, as president Nara and graphic designer Kai are also quite stylish. Jonathan enjoys kiwi products; you can often find him with a kiwi drink or kiwi-strawberry smoothie in his tanned hand.

Jane Kim:
Year: Senior
Major: Architectural Studies
Town of Residence: Queens, New York
Bio: Jane is quite possibly the funniest person in Haneulsori; she doesn't seem so at first, but once you get to know her, you will fall deeply for her dry wit. (Just beware: she is sometimes so deadpan that you will not be able to tell whether she is joking or not.) Jane, as Haneulsori's social chair, always nags us to respond to polls about social outings, but she does so in great spirit; Jane cares the most about Haneulsori members and also about our brethren across town: UCLA Hanoolim members. Jane doesn't like to mention this as much anymore because she thinks that she needs a new fun fact, but she has a KILLER Arnold Schwarzenegger impression. If Jane won the lottery, one of the top things on which she would spend her money would be a chauffeur. She can watch the movie 'Mrs. Doubtfire' over and over again ("Robin Williams is a gem" - Jane). Jane's Facebook name is "Jane Turtley Kim" because she has turtles and she likes them.

Moving onto our graduating seniors! (All features today and tomorrow will be graduating members of Haneulsori :'( )

Daae and Kai are both very talented; they both are Haneulsori's graphic designers, and they are also both very good at playing the janggu.

DaAe Kim:
Year: Senior
Major: Architectural Studies
Town of Residence: Los Angeles, California
Bio: Daae is the Haneulsori cutie, and has various nicknames including "dumpling" and "meatbun" (it's meant in a cuter way than it sounds). She is actually roommates with our other Haneulsori members, Jane and Kai. Daae is the most "local" member of Haneulsori, as she is actually from Los Angeles! Until she was about 7 or 8 years old, Daae thought that everyone on earth was a shape-shifting green monster who would turn human the moment she looked at them ("I had a lot of internal trust issues as a child" - Daae). She doesn't like coffee; instead, she relies on NOS to fuel her (which she does quite often). She wears rings that she designed herself and printed on a 3D printer. If you would like to win over Daae's heart, just bring her succulents.
Bonus funny thought: if all the vowels in the world were replaced with o's, Daae's name would be Dooo. (Credits to Jessie Chang and Amy Sizer)

Kai Jiang:
Year: Senior
Major: Fine Arts
Town of Residence: Stamford, Connecticut
Bio: Despite how many short members we have in Haneulsori, Kai is still the shortest . Her height does not reflect her capability, however; Kai is the goddess of art, creativity, janggu, and street style. Kai especially loves hats (which all contribute to her goddessliness of street style), and has probably around 30 hats. She is actually roommates with our other Haneulsori members, Daae and Jane. Her favorite pokemon is snorlax (which makes her quite compatible with our other member, Michelle Te Won Seo, as she is our very own snorlax), and always includes him in her party.
Bonus funny thought: if all the vowels in the world were replaced with o's, Kai's name would be Koo. (Again, credits to Jessie and Amy.)

Next up, we have our sophomores!

Bellamy Yoo:
Year: Sophomore
Majors: Theatre & Industrial Systems Engineering
Town of Residence: Seoul, South Korea
Bio: Bellamy's biggest talent is braiding hair. We're not kidding at all; he is by far the BEST hair braider we've ever seen. Complex YouTube tutorials? Pshh, Bellamy can do even better. Bellamy used to love watching DragonBall Z, and he still does. Bellamy actually has three different names: Bellamy, chosen by his dad; Edward, chosen by him, and Byunghoon, chosen by his grandpa. (His Korean name was actually going to be Byungki, which sounds very similar to the word "toilet" in Korean, but his grahdpa stepped in and changed it to Byunghoon. Whew.) Bellamy has lived all over the world: Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Tunisia, and the United States (Georgia and California).

Emily Park:
Year: Sophomore
Major: Health and Humanities
Town of Residence: Fullerton,California
Bio: Emily was in the school band for 8 years (she played the clarinet) before she came to USC (and joined Haneulsori!!!). If she could have any pet in the world, she would pick an axolotl (try googling it), even though they don't do anything really. Emily also moved to America from Korea; when she first moved to America, 9-year old Emily thought that she would never be able to eat Korean food again and would henceforth have to survive on only pizza and burgers (the horror!!!). Emily is also a campus cruiser driver; request her the next time you call cruiser!

Hey fam, Chinese samulnori in the mountains of Lijiang, Yunnan. By a mix of the Naxi ethnic minority and others. Thought of you all. ;)
Hey, just got your email about the first event next Thursday. I was wondering if the weekly practices are ALL going to schedule on Thursday nights for the entire Fall cause I have a lot of classes this time. It'd be a shame that I couldn't attend. By the way, I tried to email back to the sender but it did not go through for some reasons. Can I also get your organization's email please? Thanks very much!
