Whenever you begin a training cycle, and especially when you get into higher mileage, we hear a lot of, "You gotta do it!" "You should do your mid-week training!", "You must do it."

Okay, I have to ask the unthinkable, why? Why should you, or must you gotta do anything? We could all stay on the couch and watch reruns of 'Seinfeld' and eat bad food.

I’ll tell you what is motivating... having the ability to say, I am a marathoner. It is something you will carry with you for the rest of your life. No one can ever take that moniker away from you. It is yours for life.

If you want motivation, create a goal and WRITE IT DOWN. 80% of those who create a goal, and never write it down, never accomplish it. So, when the going gets tough, have a reason for doing something. Have a goal you can look at, which others know you have committed to.

Your training group can also help you become more accountable. You have a group, who watches to see if you are there and welcomes you each week.

When the going gets tough during training, with the weather, or towards the end of a race, you have a reason. It is not some mindless got to, or I should do something. It is a positive affirmation, "I will be a marathoner." It is on your wall, friends know it, and you will succeed, because you want to. That’s where true motivation comes from.

Enjoy your journey, your personal growth, the medal, and being a marathoner. We will see you at the finish line!

To Our LA Road Runners Athletes,

The McCourt Foundation is committed to staging our 2021 series of events with the health and safety of our athletes, volunteers and community as our top priority. After careful consideration and following guidance provided by the Medical and Operations Advisory Group the McCourt Foundation is announcing a series of date changes to our 2021 event schedule, as well as an update to our Rose Bowl Half Marathon and 5K racing format:

Rose Bowl 5K: January 16 & 17, 2021
Rose Bowl Half Marathon: March 27 & 28, 2021
LA Big 5K: May 22, 2021*
Los Angeles Marathon presented by ASICS: May 23, 2021*

*These dates are pending final approval of all city partners, applicable health departments and other governmental agencies.

The Rose Bowl Half Marathon & 5K will now take place on over two days on separate weekends in January and March respectively. This will allow us to ensure proper runner and walker distancing as well as a safer, more manageable event flow.

March and May events dates will continue to be evaluated to meet the highest possible health and safety of our participants, volunteers and partners. These considerations will include:

Significantly limiting field sizes
Covid-19 vaccinations and rapid-testing for participants
Mask use
Hygiene practices and procedures

New developments, health and safety protocols, additional details on new racing format including bib-pick up and racing procedures on our website,
mccourtfoundation.org/pages/covid-19-update.

There will be some changes to the 2021 training season, including health and safety protocols and alterations to meetup dates, but we are committed to delivering an exciting upcoming season in the lead up to the 2021 Los Angeles Marathon, and we can't wait to run together again soon.

Please keep an eye out for an email you will receive tomorrow with all the details.

The McCourt Foundation appreciates the continued support of our athlete’s, the community and partners. We encourage everyone to follow the recommended CDC guidelines and we look forward to seeing everyone on the road again in 2021.

Dear LA Roadrunners. One of your own is in need of help. Many of you know Betsy Jentz as she has ran and completed the last 27 LA Marathons ( she's 84 years old). If you able to share with her crew or others she could desperately use your help. Below is her story. Our beloved Betsy has had quite a year. Dec 2019 She was violently physically assaulted which left her with broken bones, bruises and PTSD. She had to pursue criminal charges against her assailant including a restraining order and having the sheriff physically remove her assailant from her apartment. She spent the next few months licking hew wounds with her arm in a cast and with severe back pain and summoned chiropractors and massage therapists to assist. One day after a treatment she called and said she couldnt get out of bed. We went to Cedars hospital where the doctor diagnosed her with a broken back. She had unknowingly suffered a fractured back from the assault and her treatments with chiro and massage elevated the fracture to a break. After weeks in the hospital she was sent to rehab. The rehab center had a covid outbreak and she asked to leave against doctors orders. The day she left she got one foot in her door to her apartment and fell backwards and shattered her hip. Back to cedars where she underwent a complete hip replacement. Back to rehab. The new rehab was covid free until some employees went out partying and contracted the virus and brought it into the facility . It is a 100 bed facility and over 90% of the patients and staff were infected including Betsy. (multiple fatalities in the facility from this incident) She is now recovering from a broken back, broken wrists, hip replacement, PTSD, newly diagnosed Parkinson's and covid all while the entire world was in a pandemic. Having ran and completed 27 LA Marathons all the way up to 2019, she is now barely able to walk 20 feet on a good day. Her doctor has informed her that she can never live on her own again and will require 24/7 care for the rest of her life. He told her that if she were to live on her own again that she would have a fall once a week or more and end up in the hospital every time and that eventually one of the falls would be fatal. We have been able to exhaust every resource possible from rental assistance to MediCal and beyond. Some of these requests are still pending. She has depleted what little savings she had on paying share of costs for her current skilled nursing living facility and trying to maintain her home/life outside the facility. She has lost her rent controlled apartment of 18 years and we are respectfully packing her things and putting them in storage. She has a mountain of financial responsibilities that have become overwhelming and are now limiting her options for present and future care and living. There was a gap between what medicare paid for her assisted living and what her new benefits from MediCal will pay. She is in the hole to the assisted living facility, ambulance rides, medication and doctor copays for nearly $15000.00. Her future rehab treatments and eventual assisted living facility share of costs and indefinite storage unit fees are mounting to another $10k+ She just needs to catch a break. All of her physical, mental and spiritual healing need not to be compounded by financial ruin and worries. The funds raised here go directly to her bank account. A wonderful thank you to all of you who have reached out, sent cards, lifted her spirits with a kind phone call and send her flowers and snacks. You all have asked privately how you can help more. This is the place. She has so much pride and is so painfully private that she will frown on putting her woes in the form of a fundraiser but we believe that when she sees the generosity of friends that her frown will turn upside down and relief will replace worry for her financially. She has zero living relatives and we all , all of you , have become her family. So much work has been done yet there is so much work left on her long road to recovery. Thank you for your help. I'll update this page frequently including a video of her response once the fundraiser is in full gear and she realizes what we have all pulled off for her collectively. Here is the link below for the go fund me campaign Https://gofund.me/bf56e171

Or, maybe you just want an amazing training program to help you with your next race. Join us tonight!
I just want to say it is an honor, to take over from Mark & Maria. There is no bad in endurance athletics. If you merely show up for fresh air, all good. If you have a goal or want to become more efficient, that's what we do best. Hope to see you all soon, and have an inspired workout!!!
Hoping to run LA this November? Then we need your help! The California Coalition of Endurance Sports is committed to the safe & responsible re-opening of endurance events (like the LA Marathon) here in California, but we can't do this without your support. If you agree that endurance events should be allowed to re-open safely based on the science, please sign our petition and share with friends who will do the same. Thank you!
If you like walking, running, waddling for a cause or just for some serious bling. Check out www.virtualrunsaustralia.com as they are trying to help out the wombats with mange in Tasmania. The more people that enter the bigger the donation to Wombat Rescue Tasmania.
