Theatre Theater

Theatre Theater Theatre Theater is an independent Los Angeles theater established in 1981,by Nicolette Chaffey and Jeff Murray , dedicated to 'new work or work new to L.A'

Since 1981 Theatre Theater has established itself as a bastion of the independent artist in LA. Whether producing in house work or hosting like minded artists, for 32 years TheatreTheater has held its freak flag high. We have served as a launching pad for some incredibly well known actors (check out our website for juicy namedropping details),won almost every theatrical award in L.A., seen many original scripts go on to future life as published plays or feature films. We are currently the resident home of The Rogue Machine who the LA Weekly described as 'simply the best new theatre company in town' while our own productions received four NAACP nominations in 2012 ( winning two-Best Actor:Alex Morris for The Motor Trade and Best Solo Performance:Sandy Brown for Oh Yes She Did. We won our first Career Achievement Award in 2011 and Kiss-FM recently called us 'an LA treasure'

Join us for a reading of a powerful, honest new play Oyster by Ronald McCants, 2010 Theater Masters Visionary Playwright Award Winner. An epic exploration of the Black-American experience through the prism of one father and son relationship.
Reading directed by Katie Lindsay
Featuring Gregg T. Daniel and Johnny Ray Gill
November 1, 8pm @ Theatre/Theater
5041 Pico Blvd 90019

$10 suggested donation/$5 is also cool/ $3 if yer broke

A Black-American man reconnects with the biological son he abandoned many years ago. As the two get to know each other, secrets from the past emerge that threaten to change everything. Can we ever know the truth of our own history? How can ghosts from our past destroy us? And how do we free ourselves from the demons that haunt us?

Ronald McCants’ work draws on the collective black experience. We want to share our work with the communities we are representing. We hope to bring a fully realized production of Oyster to churches, community centers, youth centers and high schools, reaching audiences that might not otherwise have access to professional theater. We hope this reading will serve to raise awareness about our project.

With the play Bhutan, (a land representing all the far off places and new life for which the younger characters yearn), the Rogue Machine Theatre Company once again produces what I like to call “living” theatre—a totally gratifying experience from which one leaves spent and fulfilled. Is it the play? Is it the acting, directing, or staging? All these elements come together to tell a story that pulls the audience in and will not let go. Stagehappenings

Monkey Adored by Henry Murray “…one of the most captivating attractions around right now… Magically, through all the monkeyshines, Murray manages to bring us closer to an understanding of the exquisite pain of love as practiced by the human animal.” Variety

This is the poster for Monkey Adored by Henry Murray. Produced by Rogue Machine Theater. Directed by John Flynn. The show opened last weekend Oct 8 and runs Fri and Sat @8pm, and Sun @ 3pm

How to describe this show? Hmm personally... I'd say..wonderfully trippy, as in psychedelic leaps of imagination and as in the style of poet Wallace Tripp if you know his work.
In a world of oppressed animals (aren't we all?) the rebels are gaining ground. Or are they? Exploring sexual identity, group loyalty, the mindset of the suicidal dog and the quantum mechanics behind the whole damn thing, its truly a mind bending bedtime story for adults. Funny sexy and in the end-disturbingly profound.
