Sophocles’ Greek Tragedy “Antigone” by The Classical Theater of Harlem🔥This modern rendition is so beautifully done. Antigone has lost her two brothers and one of them does not get a proper burial from the government that killed him. She goes to bury him with honor & love will not be changed come life or death. #sophocles #greektragedy #antigone #classicaltheatre #blacktheatre #blacktheater #blackbroadway #blackgirlsdotheater #women #blackwomen

How amazing was the all black cast of Broadway’s Best Shakespeare in The Park this past winter? Here’s a scene from their modern take on Margaret’s taunting appeal to Beatrice about Benedick from Act 3. Mark how one to the other did indeed on stage dispatch *yes you in the back* (killed it!) 💯 Me thinks it a full melanin maids three snaps!🤣 #blackgirlsdotheater #blackbroadway #blacktheater #pbs #shakespeareinthepark #melaninmagic #modernshakespeare #blackwomeninthearts

In 1997 David Harewood became the first Black man to play Othello at The National Theatre. Shakespeare wrote, “The Tragedy of Othello, The Moor of Venice” in 1603. White audiences did not think a Black man could be intelligent enough to play Othello as he was written to be by Shakespeare so he was for centuries played by white actors in Black face. Even now the prejudice & stigma of Black actors playing leading classical roles sadly persists as evidenced by the hateful criticism and death threats David Oyelowo received playing Henry VI for The Royal Shakespeare Company. #blackhistory #blacktheatre #shakespeare #shakespeareantheatre #prejudice #racism

So few know the name of this epic Jazz pianist who did so much for Black women in theatre & film at a time when it was not only unpopular but unheard of! Hazel Scott was black listed for being uncompromising in her desire for dignified roles for Black women. She was cast in a film as a pianist where all the Black wives of soldiers wore dirty aprons. For three days she refused to film until all their aprons were changed to floral dresses. Thank you for all the sacrifices you made that give us joy in nostalgia. No matter how intentional the attempt to erase you from history, you are not obscure to us.❤️ #hazelscott #herstory #blackherstory #phenomenalwoman #blackwomen #oldhollywood #theatre #jazzpianist #actress #blackwomenintheatre #blackgirlsintheater

To all of our amazing fans thank you for your support. Due to #coronavirus we had to make the extremely difficult decision like so many LA production companies to postpone our April show run. We are purpose driven so we will be back in business as soon as this pandemic is under control. Sending ❤️

Hail the queen mother of all Black actresses Cecily Tyson. 👑 The Oscar winner for Lifetime Achievement still going at 94 years old! Tears flow thinking of her contributions to who we are as a company today.😭 Where would ANY black actress be without her? This gem is from her 1956 debut, “Carib Gold” it was never given the credit that it deserved.😔 But it isn’t obscure because it went without attention from those who could not perceive for reasons of the cast’s color its merit. This is our classic Hollywood actress her work is GOLD to us. #deepgratitude #thankyou #cecilytyson #pioneer #trailblazer #classicactress #blackhistory #blackactress #original #unforgettable #blackwoman #phenomenalwoman #blackwomeninhollywood #herstory #blackherstory

Black men in mass media are stereotyped, silenced and stigmatized. Roles for them can be just as confining and one-dimensional. All of the ten women in our production “No Name” are nameless because of their stereotyped state. They have been silenced from prejudice and they come to the stage to speak. Black Women’s Stories Are Diverse.

Why does a story matter? We learn from stories. We evaluate other humans based on how we’ve heard their story told. Evoladad Productions is a theatre production company that focuses on bringing brave works of theatre around the true stories of black women to the stage. There are so many expressions of black feminine identity and we care about showing what that looks and feels like. We believe in crafting authentic narratives that are dignified and dimensional. We honor audiences by honoring the actors that bring the work together.
