Sink or Swim: What Happens After Music School

Posting this with pride, Jordan Brokken! Has it really been 6 years here?! Still going strong... and looking forward to the day when you're sitting ON that audition panel, rooting on those whose toil, tears, and sweat (& maybe blood at times...) may feel quite unappreciated at times!

Three recent conservatory graduates share their stories about first orchestra jobs, the audition circuit, gigging, and student debt.

Starting off the year on the right note! Once a star, always a star..... congrats on your continued success, 2014 Colburn Conservatory of Music alum Sang Yoon Kim!

Welcome Sang Yoon Kim, our new Principal Clarinet!

Unanimously chosen by the musician-comprised audition committee, he joins us at the beginning of the 2018-19 season. He performed with the SPCO as a guest musician for seven weeks in the 2017-18 season and will be featured as soloist on Weber’s Rondo for Clarinet and Strings September 20-30 and in many chamber music works throughout the coming season.

A native of South Korea, Sang Yoon Kim is the first prize winner of several international competitions, including the 67th Prague Spring International Music Competition in 2015 and the UNISA International Flute and Clarinet Competition in 2014. Kim says, “The SPCO feels like a perfect match for me in terms of my passion for solo, chamber music and orchestral playing, and the ability to satisfy all of those impulses with one amazing ensemble. I am extremely honored and excited to make music with such great musicians and share it with the Twin Cities community.”

So proud... so proud, Anthony Trionfo!

Happy Friday! Today we're thrilled to introduce you to the last artist making his debut in our 2017-18 season: flutist Anthony Trionfo.

In 2016, Anthony won both the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Concerto Competition of the Music Academy of the West Festival Orchestra. Anthony is a graduate of the Interlochen Center for the Arts, and currently studies at the Colburn Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of James Walker.

Anthony is also a dedicated teacher in Los Angeles' Jumpstart Program, and has appeared as soloist with many orchestras, including the Las Vegas Philharmonic and "The President's Own" United States Marine Band!

Anthony's March 28, 2018 debut at Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Music Center -- featuring Fauré, Clarke, Jolivet, Lowell Liebermann, and an original composition by YCA's Composer-in-Residence Katie Balch -- is not one to be missed! Want to join us? Grab your tickets at yca.org/tickets!
