BWICF 2020 SPOTLIGHT
SAMANTHA BENTLEY
@comedian_samantha_bentley

"Well my name is Samantha Bentley and I was born in Cleveland Ohio but raised in Pittsburgh PA. I'm a mother of two. I have been doing comedy for over 10 years. I love making people laugh. I started out on a public access show and tried stand up and fell in love. I've had the opportunity to open for Eddie Griffin, Tony Roberts, Michael Blackson, Joy Tory, Zanaib Johnson and Gary Owen. I really look forward to this opportunity to put my great city on the map like so many before me.

BWICF 2020 SPOTLIGHT
LEXIE GRACE
@smilelexie
Lexie Grace is an ambidextrous Black and Puerto Rican comedian and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. This NYU Tisch graduate was raised by a pack of wild female comediennes, she has always been drawn to comedy. It’s in her DNA. A Billy Wilder devotee, she believes his quote, "If you’re going to tell the truth, be funny, or they will kill you". She has preformed at the Gilda's LaughFest, All Jane Comedy Festival, Big Pine Comedy Festival, NoHo Comedy Festival and the Laugh Riot Grrrl Festival. Lexie just wrote an IKEA commercial and is currently watching lots of Korean Soaps, Telanovelas, and German Sitcoms. All of which make her cry for different reasons.

In our book, Black History has begun,

Did you know?

That Sanitary Pad was developed by a black woman called Mary Beatrice Davidson.

Until sanitary pads were created, women used all kinds of reusable fabrics to absorb menstrual flows.

Mary's invention was initially rejected. The first company that showed interest rejected it because of racial discrimination. The world had no choice, her invention was too important to be ignored. It was later accepted in 1956, 30 years later.

She received five patents for her household and other personal items creations. One of her inventions is the bathroom tissue holder, which she co-invented with her sister. The patent number was US 4354643, dated October 19, 1982.

I was on a thread a while ago, some people commented that Africans have not contributed to humanity in any way. I marveled at their ignorance.

Dear black child, I know that your environmental, economic, and political conditions deliberately put you at a disadvantage to compete favorably with your counterparts across the world, that doesn't mean that there's no greatness in you.

You carry in an important invention that the world needs, don't wait for the light at the end of the tunnel, light your way through the tunnel. You are more powerful than you think.
