Home away from home in Friedrichshain. Five weeks on the road. We are done touristing. A vodka tonic in the living room, a Donner Kabob from the corner store, and maybe we’ll stream “Goodbye Lenin.”

We have arrived at our Warsaw digs, a houseboat on the Vistula. 96 degrees, and now the skies have opened. Good thing there’s a big bottle of vodka in the freezer, and a restaurant called Tel Aviv right around the corner. All we’ve eaten in Poland is pierogis and hummus. This is where we plot the revolution, comrades.

I stood at the edge of a road in the pouring rain in Annapolis, Belarus, with some of my #helix2019 #yiddishkayt comrades — the ones who are so inclined — and said the mourners kaddish for the 2000 people who were murdered and thrown into mass graves in those woods during the N**i genocide. The N**i genocide that was perpetrated with the same language that is being used to dehumanize (and therefore justify and make possible) the mass incarceration of people in our country.

Separation of families; starvation; targeting of specific populations and deprivation of what is necessary for living and thriving. That is included in the UN definition of genocide, and that is what we are seeing.

Now we are in Brest, Belarus, where excavation for construction recently revealed another 1000 bodies. Reading the US news about the president's flaming tweets about distinguished elected officials — women of color — from the vantage point of this place is unbearable. Utterly unbearable. Eyes open, my friends. Eyes open.

Our Story

Facilitated by writer-performer Stacie Chaiken, What's the Story? is a group process studio for writers and performers who want to make compelling stories—for the stage, page, screen—based on personal material. Currently offering Monday afternoon and Tuesday evening workshops in Downtown LA, a westside Sunday-afternoon workshop begins in April.

When we want to write about personal experience — stuff that happened, stuff we think may have happened, stuff someone told us happened — there's way too much information for us to see clearly. We have to find a way to carve into meaning or intent, which is what I call story.

I call this workshop What’s the Story? because that’s always the question:

Which story do I want to tell and why?
