We are thrilled to share our open call for proposals for virtual workshops and events for July-September 2021.

At Pieter, we believe that dance is for everybody, bodies are political, and dancers are agents of change. We welcome proposals that question and expand our relationship to embodiment, movement, and dance.

Proposals will be reviewed by a volunteer committee of peers — a rotating roster of dancers, performance artists, teachers, healers, and activists.

To learn more and to access the submission form, please visit: https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSeH9XdVvpe.../viewform...

Deadline to apply: Sunday, May 16th at 11:59pm PST

If you have any questions or access needs, please email: [email protected]

Pieter Immersion Program Interest Form

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Pieter Immersion Program!

The Pieter Immersion Program is an opportunity to participate in, support, and shape the virtual offerings of Pieter Performance Space. Pieter is a platform based on holistic support for all bodies, an open exchange of ideas, and a reciprocity of generosity. The Pieter Immersion Program builds on the contributions of community members who have infused the space with their own interests and experiences through former iterations of the work-exchange internship program.

Immersion participants will be immersed in Pieter’s class, workshop and event programs, along with a community of artists, healers, and activists experimenting with a diversity of approaches to body-based practice. In exchange for your time and energy, Pieter will offer unlimited free classes and workshops for the duration of your time in the program.

To learn more and to fill out our Interest Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc7lKfE3yZTFY3MBYiSZL2fjBdJP1uhY3gke3-RPoRpOsrYFA/viewform

Priority for participation in the Pieter Immersion Program is given to people who wish to experience something new and who’ve been unable to access Pieter classes or workshops in the past.

L.A.’s dance crisis: Studios fight to survive the pandemic

Director Dorothy getting right to it with the Los Angeles Times.
Thank you Makeda Easter for shedding light on the current landscape of movement spaces across Los Angeles county

The announcements we have all read and shared ARE eerily similar, illuminating the honest reality that, more often than not, dance is left out of the conversation

Calendar – Pieter

As we prepare to say goodbye to our studio home, Pieter will be offering both physical and virtual Rituals of Farewell this weekend and next.

IN-PERSON VISITING HOURS
The studio will be open to the public on July 11/12 and July 18/19
Saturdays from 10AM to 2PM and Sundays from 12PM to 4PM. On these dates, 15 minute visits are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. On these visits, several items from the studio are available to take home on a first-come, first served basis. Before visiting, please refer to the safety protocols we are following in light of COVID-19, which you can find on our our website: https://pieterpasd.com/calendar/

VIRTUAL RITUAL EVENTS
Members of Pieter's Board of Directors in collaboration with community volunteers have organized two virtual events to honor the closing of our 10 years in the studio, and to share visions of what Pieter's future holds:

SUNDAY JULY 12 // 6 PM: Please join us for some virtual time in the studio.
While a community member visits the space with their camera, you are invited to share memories and goodbyes via Instagram Live at @pieterperformancespace or on Zoom.
Please RSVP to [email protected] for zoom login information.

SATURDAY AUGUST 1 // 6 pm: Please join us for a Virtual Welcome to Future Pieter
On this zoom call, you are invited to explore wishes for the future of Pieter as we become a Virtual Community and seek an eventual new home.
Please RSVP to [email protected] for zoom login information.

#foreverpieter
If you'd like to post any images or videos on social media, either from inside the studio if you visit, or from wherever you are, sharing memories, sentiments of farewell, and/or wishes for Pieter’s future, please use the hashtag #foreverpieter. We'd love to share and archive messages from our community as we go through a difficult but necessary stage in Pieter's evolution.

As always, we are here for you, we love you, and we thank you for being here.

AMP GATHERING 2020 is LIVE !

Join Leyya today at 3pm PST for a Welcome livestream via Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/432582261
-
Presented by Pieter Performance Space + Arab.AMP

Directed by Pieter Virtual Resident Artist Leyya Mona Tawil, Arab.AMP is a nomadic platform for experimental live art, music and ideas from the SWANA diaspora and our allied communities. The AMP Gathering 2020 in virtual form allows the work of our featured artists to “gather on the page” – to exist in time with one another and our audience. You are invited to activate and play with these time-based works in real time, layering the materials one, some or all at once. We hope that this experiment will accumulate and broadcast ‘all our voices at once’.

COMMUNITY CHECK-IN

It is with a heavy heart we share news of the departure from our studio home. For the last several months, we have been unable to utilize and share the space with the community that has shaped it

Though we face the harsh reality of not knowing where or when we will share physical space together again, Pieter is able to direct our focus and energy toward rebuilding our internal structure and setting the foundation for a more equitable and sustainable organization while simultaneously expanding our virtual programming and finding a new home

The end of July marks the closing of this 10 year (!) chapter for Pieter. If you would like to participate in planning a community ritual, please email Board Member Mona Field at [email protected]. At this time, we have arranged for the space to be open on a first-come, first-served basis of 15 minute increments for individual goodbyes during July 11th-12th and July 18th-19th, Saturday from 10am-2pm and Sunday 12pm-4pm respectively

In the meantime, if you are interested in getting involved as we set the stage for this new evolution, we welcome your time, energy and skill. All questions and inquiries can be directed to [email protected]

In strength, peace, love and unity,
Pieter

Last week we donated all class proceeds to Black Lives Matter LA, thanks to the support of Pieter teachers and all of those who contributed. Moving forward, we are encouraging those who have the means to match their class payments with a donation (Patia Borja/@patiasfantasyworld has assembled an incredible resource that includes funds, organizations, businesses and individuals you can support: http://pfw.guide/). In addition, we are encouraging you to share in Deep Pieter the actions that you are taking, as well as further resources for antiracist education.

We are here for you, we love you, and we thank you for joining us.

TOMORROW NIGHT
Monday Night Class with Prima Generación Dance Collective
-
dear familia, amigxs, colegxs, compañerxs, y conocidxs,

There is no doubt that we are living in political desmadre (political messiness). In light of the heartbreaking and dire moments we are in, Primera Generación Dance Collective would like to express our support and solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and our black brothers, sisters, and peoples.

In response to the protests taking place, we are committed to helping the cause by inviting those who cannot or aren't able to join them to come share space with us as we repurpose this week's Monday Night Class at Pieter. We invite you to living in desmadre: in solidarity with BLM where our artivista friends, Justin Morris, Aisha Shauntel, and Nicole Robinson will lead our class in corporeal protest, breathing, and conversation. We can move forward, acknowledging that this impacts all of us a whole and that we each have a role to play in creating change.

Primera’s proceeds for this class will be donated to the Black Lives Matter movement. Please sign up via [email protected]

Holding space looks and feels different for everyone- all valid in their own way. But remaining neutral has no association to solidarity and unity.

"if [we] are neutral in situations of injustice, [we] have chosen the side of the oppressor" -Desmond Tutu

Pieter stands with those who are grieving, those who are fighting and have been fighting and those who cannot. As a body-based movement community and organization, we are committed to being a resource for education and action-sharing, and hold ourselves accountable for the continuity of this work. Defend black and brown lives. We need to listen and learn. Anti-racist work begins within.

Pieter acknowledges that our organization is not impervious to systemic oppression and inequities of race, gender, class, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion, and mental health, and thus we are committed to leaning into critical dialogue, consciousness-raising, and continuously evolving as an organization to better hear and serve the needs of our community
