AHNS Leadership Convenes Via Zoom

In a parallel universe, we would have just concluded our 10th International Conference in Chicago. As you are all aware, this conference is postponed until next summer, where hopefully we will meet in person. However, conducting the business of the society is still a priority of many of the AHNS leaders and even the global pandemic did not stop the AHNS Council from meeting and discussing the initiatives and action items our services and sections have been working on.

I wanted to briefly update you on the work and progress of our leaders, as it’s vast and impressive! It wouldn’t be possible without their dedication and commitment to the mission of our society.

Some of the AHNS initiatives include:

Advanced Training Council continuation of curriculum education for our fellows
Upcoming webinars from various sections and services, including potential CME credits, to help provide education for our members
Special symposium on Ethics and COVID-19 during COSM
Abstract opening (part 2!) for our International Conference next summer
A renewed patient education initiative that will involve all six sections
Increased social media campaigns
Special forums and bulletin board on COVID-19
An increased number of guidelines and position statements, endorsed by the AHNS
Awarding of research grants, awards and mentoring partnerships
And more international collaboration!

As it turns out, and as no surprise, surgeons are even more productive during a global crisis. Thank you to the AHNS Council, Service Chairs, Section Leaders and Representatives and to all members who are coming together to produce impactful work for our specialty. If you have any suggestions for the society or would like to become more involved, please reach out to our Executive Director, Christina Kasendorf, at [email protected].

Stay safe and well,

Cherie-Ann Nathan, MD
AHNS President

AHNS Receives Highest CME Designation

The American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) has been reviewed by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®) and awarded Accreditation with Commendation for six (6) years as a provider of continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. Accreditation in the ACCME System seeks to assure the medical community and the public that the AHNS delivers education that is relevant to clinicians’ needs, evidence-based, evaluated for its effectiveness, and independent of commercial influence.

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®) accredits organizations that provide continuing medical education for physicians. The ACCME System employs a rigorous process for evaluating institutions’ CME programs according to standards that reflect the values of the educator community and aim to accelerate learning, inspire change, and champion improvement in healthcare. Through participation in accredited CME, clinicians and teams drive improvement in their practice and optimize the care, health, and wellness of their patients.

The Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancers Symposium, Expanding Treatment Horizons to include all-digital posters and expert hours.

Be sure to register at http://ow.ly/NxMW50wXHNL by December 4 for the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancers Symposium to take advantage of the early-bird rates.

This meeting takes place February 27-29, 2020, at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona.

2018 attendees called it “a truly interdisciplinary meeting” that provided “very relevant information on the management of head and neck cancers with updates on immunotherapy and new systemic therapies.”

The top 30 posters will be highlighted in a new Poster Theater during an evening reception in the Exhibit Hall.

The program also includes an “Expert Office Hour” during lunchtime on Thursday. Attendees can join informal round tables where two experts will be available to discuss anything from career advice to a challenging case.

I just finished reading the article on Neck Dissection (Published on January 21, 2016 by JJ Jackman) with much interest. In 1979-80, after around 6600 Rads of Cobalt, I underwent bi-lateral radical neck dissections. Saved my life. Unfortunately, the long-term impact has been intractable chronic pain. I had to chuckle at the single sentence given to that as a consequence; "Neck stiffness or pain." My USAF doctors were very up front with me regarding my future and the fact that I would most likely be experiencing pain on a close and personal level. I have been to 10 professional pain management clinics and until recently all have been helpful, and literally life-saving. Unfortunately, due to the opioid "epidemic," pain management seems now to have turned into something entirely different. Previously, once a person has tried everything, including stellate ganglion blocks, many drugs (including gabapentin, desyrel, elavil, valium, etc., etc., and also a trial with a Intrathecal Catheter; being prescribed the one thing which worked was NOT seen as addictive behavior. Now I'll get to my point, finally. In 1979 an ENT Doctor saved my life. Now, 41 years later I seem to have nowhwere else to turn for answers. So, a question of your kind people. Could the procedures I underwent for treatment of nasopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma result in intractable chronic pain, with so many sources of pain as to be largely unmanagabe, or am I really just a drug seeking addict as has been "suggested?" The attached photo is what has been recommended by a Pain management clinic which shall remain unnamed.
