WEBSITE: girlschoolla.com TWITTER: twitter.com/girlschoolla INSTAGRAM: instagram.com/girlschoolla TUMBLR: girlschoolla.tumblr.com GIRLSCHOOL is a Los Angeles-based women-led music festival, online platform, and collective that celebrates and connects women-identified artists, leaders, and voices. Originally founded by Anna Bulbrook (the Bulls | the Airborne Toxic Event | Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros) in response to how few women she saw onstage in the alternative rock world, GIRLSCHOOL has grown into a vibrant volunteer network of women in music who connect to create an empowering community for one another while supporting women and girls. A portion of the proceeds from every GIRLSCHOOL event benefits a girl-positive organization.

Mission: Our mission is to celebrate, connect, and lift excellent women-identified and gender-expanded artists, leaders, and voices.

On Feb. 3, 2018, Fiona Apple spoke to Recording Academy / GRAMMYs from our stage alongside Shirley Manson. 366 days later, Recording Academy / GRAMMYs hosted a conversation led by this group of powerful women. Let's keep working.

Thank you We Are Hear, the GRAMMYs, Macy Gray, Angel Haze, Beatie Wolfe, Willa Amai, Sheri Timmons, and the don herself, #LindaPerry, for an amazing afternoon speaking truth to kids.

Love this video of DESI MO interviewing Garbage, Rituals of Mine, and founder Anna Bulbrook at Girlschool 2018 for UPROXX, because it reminds us why we work so hard to create a welcoming space for women-identified artists and bad bitches to shine. What kind of magic can happen when women are free to be our bad selves, to dream big, to create? We aim to find out.

Welcome to Girlschool, the Festival and Community Bringing Equality Center Stage

If you believe in the magic of the community that is Girlschool Festival + Community, then you should check out the incredible magic of Ruidosa and it's FIRE leader, Francisca Valenzuela. I was honored to speak with Francisca and Noisey's Andrea Domanick about why environments like Girlschool and Ruidosa are important; what challenges we hope to transform through collective action; the experiences that prompted the two of us to start parallel communities; and the opportunities for growth and the responsibilities that attend creating special spaces like these. β€” Anna Bulbrook

Artists Anna Bulbrook and Francisca Valenzuela discuss the triumphs and challenges of making non-male space in the music industry. Get ready for Girlschool 2018 this weekend with Noisey's exclusive playlist.

I wish girlschool came sooner...
Hello new friends! I'm here to post a little "call-to-arms" as it were, but let me introduce myself first, and then if you could read on to see if you could help out, I'd be grateful! 😘 Hi, I'm Tanya! I recently moved to Brisbane, Australia from Hobart, Australia. I work alternately in Events (Festivals) and Healthcare (Nursing), and I've also recently become involved at our local radio station 4ZZZ, which has become an awesome highlight of my day-to-day life. And also leads me to the reason for my post! We're trying to increase female airtime at 4ZZZ! Because: D'uh. One of the arguments against it that Management are coming across, however, is 'reverse discrimination' ... due to the fact that a male-dominated industry ends up sending us male-dominated music (whaaaaaat? How does that even happen - weird, right?), it's seen by some as unfair to have to actively seek out female music in our library that has a much, much larger selection of male music (of which there's a bloody huge selection of wonderfully talented dudes, by the way. We just want to include OTHER wonderful music by people who aren't necessarily dudes as well). Our library is run by AMAZING volunteers who do an AMAZING job, FYI - but they only get sent what they get sent! SO. Do any of you have any female music hiding up your sleeves that might not be in our music library? Could you please send it in? And if you know anyone else who might be able to send in female music - from anywhere in the world - we'd love to hear from them as well! Whilst 4ZZZ is always aiming to promote local and Australian music - we can play anyone! Some of our shows are pretty specifically themed - so there are some on the team who may find it harder to source female content for their particular niche, regardless of how willing they are. The wider and further this call can go, therefore - the better! You can check out the program here - perhaps a particular show will speak to your interests? (http://www.4zzzfm.org.au/grid) Oh, and here's the added bonus - it doesn't even need to be an ALL-FEMALE band! Anything that has a minimum of 1 HUMAN FEMALE makes the cut! Woweee, right? ** Other issues that might come up if some people are struggling to play music that represents HALF THE POPULATION - are the also-suggested increased airtime of non-binary and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander folk. So the call out should go out on their behalf, too. If you can help us out, could you please kindly send stuff to: [email protected]. (And I'd love it if you could CC in [email protected]) You could maybe put: MORE FEMALE/NON-BINARY/ATSI MUSIC FOR YOUR LIBRARY :) as a subject line, just for funsies. Perhaps a more equally-weighted library could lead to a more equally-weighted playlist? Thanks so much in advance x
Rachael Leigh Herrera are you down to go one of the days?
