Meet Ruby Barrios: Actor, Advocate and Writer

"Inner-City Arts not only encouraged me to grow as an artist, the faculty have become lifelong friends. Inner-City Arts is always there to spread the word and support my art. They have also given me the platform to create art for empowering collaborations, such as the ICA x LA Chargers Black History Month Virtual Art Showcase. Through this event, we celebrated living Black Angelenos who continue to impact their communities."

Be sure to check out this article from Shoutout LA featuring Inner-City Arts alum Ruby Barrios and read up on how she combines the arts with her social outreach endeavors!

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruby Barrios and we've shared our conversation below. Hi Ruby, how has your work-life balance changed over time? I used to wear my burnout as a personal badge of honor. Both my parents sacrificed their own well-being for the sake of my sister and I. The

We're excited to share a warm virtual welcome to our two Research and Virtual Curation Interns for this summer, Brendan Thompson & Nicholas (Nicky) Straub. The primary focus of their work is to support the development of our online initiative, Art Space: a virtual hub for young people and those who care about them, supporting youth and families with research-informed content that inspires creativity and wellness.

Additionally, we are joined by two interns from our collaborators at SCI-Arc who continue to support and uplift the educational and creative goals of Inner-City Arts: Alma Sofía Ramos & Jasper Gregory.

Brendan Thompson (he/they) is a student at UCLA studying World Arts and Cultures, Visual and Performing Arts Education, and Community Engagement and Social Change. They are a multidisciplinary artist focused primarily on zines, film photography, and drawing. Brendan enjoys giving back to the community through mutual aid projects such as the LA Community Fridges.

Nicholas Straub (he/his) is a Junior at Boston College studying Economics and Music. Arts education, especially through music, has played a huge role in his life. Aside from providing him with lifelong friendships and memories, art has shaped his personality, values, and views of the world. He feels so fortunate to be in this position and looks forward to passing on the arts education that has given so much to him.

Alma Sofía Ramos (she/her) is an Undergraduate Student at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). She was born and raised in Los Angeles and has an immense passion for the fields of Design and the Arts. As an Alumni of Inner-City Arts, she has a deep admiration for the place that inspired her during her youth and helped her get where she is today.

Jasper Gregory (she/they) is a Houston, Texas native. She is finishing her second year at SCI-Arc and will be graduating with a master of architecture degree in September. She has a strong background in visual arts, photography, and digital art. In their free time, she enjoys teaching yoga to friends, horseback riding, and hiking.
